Book excerpt: I began teaching 35 years ago, but this is not a book about how wonderful schools are. Nor is it a book complementing education about a job well done. KIDS never seem to rise to the level of expectations of the caretakers of our schools. Unless they're the students who completely comply and excel, it seems some little part of their make up, too often repulses the people who are supposed to have compassion and understanding for their weaknesses and psychological frailties. Education has a knack for suffocating creativity, establishing unrealistically high expectations, repressing exciting, expressive adolescent personalities, and perpetuating a system that is dull and disconnected from the potentials of technology. Instead of paving the way for student success, it creates unnecessary and complicated roadblocks that constantly keep students and parents off balance and confused. Teachers and administrators led by the "Theory Heads" in state and federal government positions have established success in college as the gold standard. Everyone is judged as a person according to whether they meet that narrow standard of success. There within the problem lies. The common thread that runs deep throughout this system is the fact that most of the people making the rules are well-educated, were great students, wouldn't recognize a disability or a "child at risk" if they slapped them in the face and yet they are the people who pave the runways by which we all fly. They equate high GPA's with effective teaching and effective learners. They want to perpetuate the system in their own likeness and they have. Students in the top 25% of their class will always succeed. However, a group I call the "Muddled Middle" gets the leftovers, and little respect. It is those misunderstood, lost and timid souls, along with their families for which I write this book.

Book Synopsis Statistics Alive! by : Wendy J. Steinberg
Download or read book Statistics Alive! written by Wendy J. Steinberg and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on years of first-hand teaching experience, Wendy J. Steinberg has created Statistics Alive!, the most user-friendly statistics text for students in the social and behavioral sciences, now in its Second Edition. She believes that this audience can master basic statistics--especially the mechanics and the underlying logic of hypothesis testing--by employing a conceptual, modular approach without dumbing down the presentation. While this textbook includes must-have topics such as frequency distributions, hypothesis formation, and inferential statistics and bivariate regression, it also includes concepts of sampling error, significant differences, and Type 1 and Type 2 errors throughout. Also, effect size and power, often shortchanged in other textbooks, each get substantive treatment. Students are well prepared for a next course in statistics. Key Features The modular treatment allows students to master prescribed chunks of information before continuing to the next module. Mathematical proofs are minimized, in favor of verbal explanations. Strong pedagogy throughout includes a series of learning objectives and key terms in the beginning of each chapter to scaffold the student's learning The "Check Yourself!" questions throughout allow for student knows immediately whether or not he has mastered what he has just read. The logical similarity of all hypothesis tests is stressed, so that the student understands the meaning of the calculations, as well as which statistics apply to which designs. A final module provides both a narrative review and a visual flow-chart for matching statistics with designs. New to the Second Edition Twice as many chapter exercises Solutions provided to the student for half of the exercises A final module on multiple regression and the General Liner Model is included, as a bridge for students continuing on to a second course in statistics SPSS point-and-click instructions and screen shots of the output for all in-text examples, so that students can solve the exercises both manually and via software Descriptive dispersion solutions shown using both N and n-1 denominators, to accommodate any instructor's preference A more comprehensive Student Study Guide and Instructor Resource Guide A version bound with SPSS Student Version 18.0 is also available (ISBN: 978-1-4129-7951-1).

Book Synopsis Improvisation and Social Aesthetics by : Georgina Born
Download or read book Improvisation and Social Aesthetics written by Georgina Born and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing a wide range of improvised art and music forms—from jazz and cinema to dance and literature—this volume's contributors locate improvisation as a key site of mediation between the social and the aesthetic. As a catalyst for social experiment and political practice, improvisation aids in the creation, contestation, and codification of social realities and identities. Among other topics, the contributors discuss the social aesthetics of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the Feminist Improvising Group, and contemporary Malian music, as well as the virtual sociality of interactive computer music, the significance of "uncreative" improvisation, responses to French New Wave cinema, and the work of figures ranging from bell hooks and Billy Strayhorn to Kenneth Goldsmith. Across its diverse chapters, Improvisation and Social Aesthetics argues that ensemble improvisation is not inherently egalitarian or emancipatory, but offers a potential site for the cultivation of new forms of social relations. It sets out a new conceptualization of the aesthetic as immanently social and political, proposing a new paradigm of improvisation studies that will have reverberations throughout the humanities. Download or read book Aboutness written by Stephen Yablo and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aboutness has been studied from any number of angles. Brentano made it the defining feature of the mental. Phenomenologists try to pin down the aboutness-features of particular mental states. Materialists sometimes claim to have grounded aboutness in natural regularities. Attempts have even been made, in library science and information theory, to operationalize the notion. But it has played no real role in philosophical semantics. This is surprising; sentences have aboutness-properties if anything does. Aboutness is the first book to examine through a philosophical lens the role of subject matter in meaning. A long-standing tradition sees meaning as truth-conditions, to be specified by listing the scenarios in which a sentence is true. Nothing is said about the principle of selection--about what in a scenario gets it onto the list. Subject matter is the missing link here. A sentence is true because of how matters stand where its subject matter is concerned. Stephen Yablo maintains that this is not just a feature of subject matter, but its essence. One indicates what a sentence is about by mapping out logical space according to its changing ways of being true or false. The notion of content that results--directed content--is brought to bear on a range of philosophical topics, including ontology, verisimilitude, knowledge, loose talk, assertive content, and philosophical methodology. Written by one of today's leading philosophers, Aboutness represents a major advance in semantics and the philosophy of language.
Download or read book Woe Is I written by Patricia T. O'Conner and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised and updated edition of the iconic grammar guide for the 21st century. In this expanded and updated edition of Woe Is I, former editor at The New York Times Book Review Patricia T. O'Conner unties the knottiest grammar tangles with the same insight and humor that have charmed and enlightened readers of previous editions for years. With fresh insights into the rights, wrongs, and maybes of English grammar and usage, O'Conner offers in Woe Is I down-to-earth explanations and plain-English solutions to the language mysteries that bedevil all of us. "Books about English grammar and usage are... never content with the status quo," O'Conner writes. "That's because English is not a stay-put language. It's always changing--expanding here, shrinking there, trying on new things, casting off old ones... Time doesn't stand still and neither does language." In this fourth edition, O'Conner explains how the usage of an array of words has evolved. For example, the once-shunned "they," "them," and "their" for an unknown somebody is now acceptable. And the battle between "who" and "whom" has just about been won, O'Conner says (hint: It wasn't by "whom"). Then there's the use of "taller than me" in simple comparisons, instead of the ramrod-stiff "taller than I." "May" and "might," "use to" and "used to," abbreviations that use periods and those that don't, and the evolving definition of "unique" are all explained here by O'Conner. The result is an engaging, up-to-date and jargon-free guide to every reader's questions about grammar, style, and usage for the 21st century.

Download or read book The Book of Mormon written by Grant Hardy and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2005-08-10 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarded as sacred scripture by millions, the Book of Mormon -- first published in 1830 -- is one of the most significant documents in American religious history. This new reader-friendly version reformats the complete, unchanged 1920 text in the manner of modern translations of the Bible, with paragraphs, quotations marks, poetic forms, topical headings, multichapter headings, indention of quoted documents, italicized reworkings of biblical prophecies, and minimized verse numbers. It also features a hypothetical map based on internal references, an essay on Book of Mormon poetry, a full glossary of names, genealogical charts, a basic bibliography of Mormon and non-Mormon scholarship, a chronology of the translation, eyewitness accounts of the gold plates, and information regarding the lost 116 pages and significant changes in the text. The Book of Mormon claims to be the product of three historical interactions: the writings of the original ancient American authors, the editing of the fourth-century prophet Mormon, and the translation of Joseph Smith. The editorial aids and footnotes in this edition integrate all three perspectives and provide readers with a clear guide through this complicated text. New readers will find the story accessible and intelligible; Mormons will gain fresh insights from familiar verses seen in a broader narrative context. This is the first time the Book of Mormon has been published with quotation marks, select variant readings, and the testimonies of women involved in the translation process. It is also the first return to a paragraphed format since versification was added in 1879.
Book Synopsis From Coldwar Communism to the Global Emancipatory Movement by : Peter Waterman
Download or read book From Coldwar Communism to the Global Emancipatory Movement written by Peter Waterman and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boaventura de Sousa Santos says: 'This is an admirable memoir of an intellectual activist who has lived most intensely the progressive struggles of the last sixty years of world history, because despite being born in Europe, Peter, in the best tradition of communist internationalism, participated in struggles and movements, not only in Central and Eastern Europe, but also in Africa and most recently in Latin America. But this is much more than a memoir. It is so well documented that in this personal experience there are reflected some of the most decisive events of contemporary history. It is a living history book. But even more than this, this book is so clearly and vividly written that at times it reads like the script for an imaginary documentary of our times. This book should be read by all concerned with our recent history in order to get a much more complex inside view of what happened while it was happening. In particular it should be read by the youth in order to get a close-up of the difficulties and possibilities in building another possible world at a time where there existed a vibrant international communist movement. It is up to such youth to evaluate whether difficulties are now or more daunting, the possibilities less of more luminous.'

Book Synopsis The Plates of Mormon by : Brant A. Gardner
Download or read book The Plates of Mormon written by Brant A. Gardner and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description: For nearly two centuries, Latter-day Saints have been reading the Book of Mormon through multiple changes in its punctuation, formatting, and versification. The Plates of Mormon: A Book of Mormon Study Edition Based on Textual and Narrative Structures in the English Translation offers a new perspective on this book of scripture by seeking to align its English translation with the inaccessible golden plates from which that translation was made. Originally punctuated and formatted by the 1830 first edition’s compositor, John H. Gilbert, who had to add punctuation and paragraphs to the text to make it more reader-friendly, this study edition meticulously returns to this issue by reexamining punctuation and paragraphs to enhance readability while maintaining faithfulness to the source material. Utilizing insights explored in his companion volume, Engraven Upon Plates, Printed Upon Paper: Textual and Narrative Structures of the Book of Mormon, editor Brant A. Gardner also addresses issues of spelling, grammar, alterations, deletions, and paratextual information, providing readers with a deeper understanding of the Book of Mormon's composition and the principles guiding this edition's editorial decisions. Additionally, this edition examines narrative and literary structures in its translation to best represent how Mormon’s ancient writings were recorded on his golden plates. It does so not only by removing modern summaries and versification formatting, but also by returning the text to its original chapters and relocating the small plates section outside of Mormon’s intended record. It also highlights the logic behind punctuation, paragraphing, chapters, and headers, helping readers gain a more profound appreciation for the text's nuances. If you're interested in the Book of Mormon's origins, textual structure, and the thoughtful decisions made in presenting it, this edition provides valuable insights and a fresh perspective on this sacred text. It is a must-read for those seeking to explore the Book of Mormon anew. Praise for The Plates of Mormon: "Brant Gardner’s The Plates of Mormon: A Book of Mormon Study Edition is highly recommended to any and all readers who want to more deeply engage the text of the Book of Mormon. In this book, Gardner takes readers back to the early stages of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. He expertly works through the book’s transmission, bringing to life the words of Mormon, Nephi, and others. Gardner skillfully integrates the earliest manuscripts of the Book of Mormon while also highlighting the hundreds of places where the Book of Mormon interacts with the Bible. A remarkable achievement." — Nicholas J. Frederick, Associate Professor of Ancient Scripture, Brigham Young University, and author of The Bible, Mormon Scripture, and the “Rhetoric of Allusivity” "This volume is a welcome addition to other recent study editions of the Book of Mormon. Relying upon the Printer’s Manuscript, Gardner succeeds in making the text more intelligible and accessible to readers through a careful restructuring of punctuation, sentences, paragraphs, and narrative blocks, as well as by beginning with the large plates followed by the small. Readers will engage anew with the text of the Book of Mormon in this logically and creatively reformatted presentation, supported by highly insightful footnotes. There is much to be gained from this innovative contribution to Book of Mormon studies." — Kerry Hull, co-editor, A Hundredth Part: Exploring the History and Teachings of the Book of Mormon "Brant Gardner’s The Plates of Mormon: A Book of Mormon Study Edition is an excellent addition to the small but growing number of scholarly editions of the Nephite record. Working from the Printer’s Manuscript, Gardner has undertaken the labor of its first compositor, John H. Gilbert, by punctuating and paragraphing the Book of Mormon text afresh and providing a new and enjoyable experience, one which rewards its readers with new insights as the familiar chapter-and-verse structure is shaken up. Most notable is the re-arrangement by order of translation, allowing readers to experience the Book of Mormon as its original authors intended. Footnotes throughout provide interesting history and insights from the Original and Printers’ Manuscripts, as well as noting quotations, allusions, and echoes to the language of the King James Bible, enriching the reader’s experience. Having published and presented on the Book of Mormon in academic settings for over two decades, Brant Gardner has here produced a study edition of the Book of Mormon worthy of inclusion on the shelves of every serious student of the keystone scripture." — Jared Riddick, librarian and archivist at Scripture Central
Book Synopsis Would I Lie to You? by : Judi Ketteler
Download or read book Would I Lie to You? written by Judi Ketteler and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An interesting reported memoir about the power of honesty—not surprisingly, a surprisingly honest account.” —Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of The Happiness Project “Some books change how you think. Some change how you act. Would I Lie to You? does both.” —KJ Dell’Antonia, editor New York Times Motherlode blog, and author of How to Be a Happier Parent Inspired by her popular New York Times article, “How Honesty Could Make You Happier,” award-winning journalist Judi Ketteler takes a deep dive into the hard truths about honesty, from the personal to the political . . . We’re incensed by politicians who lie and corporations that cheat, but when it comes to our own honesty choices, we often barely notice. So, what happens when we do notice? Judi Ketteler thought of herself as an honest person. And yet, she knew it wasn’t the whole story . . . How often was Judi engaging in the same dishonest behavior she was condemning in others? To answer that question, she started her “Honesty Journal,” and set out to confront her perennial fear of speaking the truth in a range of situations—including with friends, her kids, and even inside her complicated marriage. The result is a timely consideration of the joys and pains of truth in a world that seems committed to lying. “Great for generating discussion on the subject of authenticity and thinking through tough questions.” —Library Journal “Would I Lie to You? is filled with so many fresh insights and proactive solutions that it could pass for a masterclass on honesty.” —Camille Pagán, bestselling author of I’m Fine and Neither Are You “Candor, humor, and wry guidance for developing positive, forthright relationships with ourselves and others.” —Foreword Magazine
