Book Synopsis Separate But Equal? by : Tony Edwards
Download or read book Separate But Equal? written by Tony Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks in detail at the strong contrasts in the provision traditionally made for 'academically' and 'vocationally' minded students, and looks at differences and similarities in practice. The chapters report evidence of how students on both sides think they have been taught. They also report on how those students prefer to learn, how their teachers define the kinds of learning appropriate for particular qualifications and how the organisation of learning for 'different but equal' qualifications was observed in forty schools and colleges. The book's main focus is on the objectives and processes of learning at a stage which is certainly being transformed, but which is still powerfully shaped by myths about the sixth form and education of 'leaders'.

Book Synopsis Modularisation of Vocational Education in Europe by : Hubert Ertl
Download or read book Modularisation of Vocational Education in Europe written by Hubert Ertl and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines modularisation in the German system of initial vocational education and training – an issue that is a matter of intense debate by educationists and politicians in Germany. After examining the underlying concept of modularisation, Hubert Ertl looks at approaches to it in Spain, Scotland, France and the Netherlands, before examining in detail the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) framework in England and Wales. The author demonstrates how the strengths and weaknesses of NVQs (and their functional position within the education and training system) are particularly significant to the strategy of modularisation in German initial training that he goes on to propose. This strategy recommends the evolutionary development of the elements of occupational profiles into self-contained modules, and identifies the ways in which these elements have to be transformed in order to fulfil the functions of modules in a modularised training system. The author hopes that the restructured system may incorporate modules developed in co-operation with European partners and so link to other national training systems.
Book Synopsis Improving GNVQ Retention and Completion by : Peter Davies
Download or read book Improving GNVQ Retention and Completion written by Peter Davies and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet, which draws heavily on the findings of a major study of the causes of student withdrawal from General National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQ) courses in Britain, explains how student retention and completion can be improved at each stage of students' progress through a further education college. The booklet begins with background information on the study methodologies and conclusions, information about the publications arising from the project, and guidelines for using the booklet. In each of the next five sections, various issues identified during the survey are discussed in a format that includes some or all of the following: issues, checklists for addressing them, illustrative case studies, and pertinent quotations. The following topics are addressed: staff perceptions of GNVQ's, the accuracy of published rates of noncompletion, and staff versus student perceptions of reasons for noncompletion; planning for GNVQs (volume and timing of assignments); course guidance; program implementation (providing pastoral and learning support and balancing theory and practice); and course review and evaluation. The final chapter summarizes the study conclusions and lists seven types of further support for schools and colleges. Also included are an annotated listing of 24 useful resources and addresses and a list of 18 references. (MN)

Download or read book GNVQs 1993-94 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A project examined how General National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQs) are evolving and how far their development is in line with the objectives originally set out for them by the government. Information was collected from institutions in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which began offering GNVQs in 1993-94. The survey examined the five subject areas generally available to centers: art and design, business, health and social care, leisure and tourism, and manufacturing. Data were collected on Intermediate and Advanced GNVQs. Detailed responses were obtained from 156 centers and 1,103 students. Findings indicated major differences between schools, further education (FE) colleges, and sixth-form colleges in the sort of GNVQ programs offered. The most popular area of study was business. Centers chose to offer GNVQs because the government was perceived to be phasing out older awards. The rapid growth of GNVQ enrollments reflected a major change in young people's educational aspirations rather than any characteristics of the awards themselves. Very large numbers of GNVQ students aspired to higher education. The actual qualifications of the current Advanced GNVQ cohort differed substantially from those given by centers as their official entry criteria. Approaches to core skills teaching were extremely variable. GNVQs seemed to be evolving very much as an educational rather than vocational award. Book Synopsis General National Vocational Qualifications and Progression to Higher Education by :
Download or read book General National Vocational Qualifications and Progression to Higher Education written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin describes the use of new qualifications, the General National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQ), which have been developed in Great Britain to qualify students for admittance to higher education through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The first part of the bulletin discusses the suitability of GNVQs as a route from school or college to higher education and describes ways in which GNVQ programs might be enhanced for progression. The second part of the bulletin offers some advice and guidance on establishing agreements, supporting progression to higher education from GNVQs, between centers offering GNVQs, and universities and colleges of higher education. Examples are provided, and a checklist for establishing a GNVQ progression agreement is included. The findings in this bulletin are derived from research undertaken by UCAS and the National Council for Vocational Qualifications with higher education institutions and further education colleges.
