Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knowledge of God and Other Sermons "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent." St. John xvii. 3. So spake the Master we follow in His great prayer the night before He died on the Cross; and the Church has taken His words into one of her daily collects, speaking of God, "in knowledge of whom" (that is, of course, "in the knowing of whom") "standeth our eternal life"; as well as into the Collect for St. Philip and St. James's Day - "whom truly to know is everlasting life." But men say, 'We cannot know God: we do not deny the existence of God; but we affirm that, if there be a God, He is unknowable.' Now let me at once allow that there is a great truth underlying this agnosticism. There generally is a truth at the root of all error; for error is mostly partial or one-sided truth, erring in its ignoring of other truth. It is true, then, that a finite being like man cannot know, with any complete or commensurate knowledge, an infinite Being like God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Agnosticism: A Controversy Now we are not here concerned with this doctrine as a mere question of abstract philosophy respecting the limits of our natural capacities. We have to consider it in relation to the Church and to Christianity, and the main consideration which it is the purpose of this paper to suggest is that, in this relation, the adoption of the term agnostic is only an attempt to Shift the issue, and that it involves a mere evasion. A Christian Catechism says: First, I learn to believe in God the Father, who hath made me, and all the world; secondly, in God the Son, who hath redeemed me, and all mankind; thirdly, in God the Holy Ghost, who sanctifieth me, and all the elect people of God. The agnostic says: H ow do you know all that? I consider I have no means of knowing these things you assert respecting God. I do not know, and can not know, that God is a Father, and that he has a Son; and I do not and can not know that such a Father made me, or that such a Son redeemed me. But the Christian did not Speak of what he knew, but of what he believed. The first word of a Christian is not I know, but I believe. He professes, not a science, but a faith; and at baptism he accepts, not a theory, but a creed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agnosticism Sermons Preached in St. Peter's, Cranley Gardens, 1883-4 A large class of modern thinkers tell us that we have not, and cannot have, any knowledge of God. Let us examine this doctrine of Agnosticism. If it be true, faith is a mistake; prayer is a mockery; to hope for immortality is as unreasonable as to hope for wings. Nothing worth calling a religion, as we saw last Advent, can ever be founded upon an agnostic basis. And as for Christianity, well - is the agnostics are right- no one was ever the victim of more serious delusions than Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atheism of the Heart: And Other Sermons Psalm XIV: I The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. With the Hebrew, the idea of wisdom included virtue and piety. A man who was not Virtuous and pious was a fool. The Hebrew word here rendered fool means a simpleton, an imbecile a moral simpleton, a moral im becile. For the Hebrew had other words for the folly of the idiot and the madman. This title does not relate to a man's mental capacity, but to the moral use he makes of it. And, in this sense, the more a man knows with out knowing God, the greater fool he is. With the He brew, every man was gauged by his estimate of God. And if he said there was no God, it was the surest test that could be applied to him denying God he betrayed himself to be a fool. It fixed him as a moral simpleton, an imbecile; not weak as we say, in his upper story, meaning the brain, but weak in the moral foundations of his nature where, if there is weakness, it affects the whole structure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Kadison was a devout agnostic although he wrote many essays and articles on the topic of religion during his lifetime. The book Through Agnostic Spectacles houses several of his best essays on agnosticism. For those unfamiliar with the term, agnostic refers to a person who claims neither belief nor disbelief in a higher power, or "God." This book begins with Kadison's creed which states "Reason my final arbiter shall be; Blind faith is barred from my philosophy. Nor God nor Christ know I: my deity is Man; my creed bows to no fetish. Neither do I crave salvation in a life beyond the grave: Far better strive mankind on earth to save through word and deed." This creed sets the tone, not just for Kadison's approach to religion, but for the entire text of the book. The line: "Blind faith is barred from my philosophy" alone establishes that Kadison has made it his mission to investigate religion instead of blindly following it. In Through Agnostic Spectacles readers are given a glimpse of this scholar's fascinating point of view on religion. Kadison's beliefs (or lack thereof) represent a subset of religious believers, one which many readers may not have been exposed to prior to this. His arguments for agnosticism run throughout the essays as he tries to sway the reader from blind faith towards a more balanced approach to religion. Overall, the book is an intriguing historic look at religion and individual approaches to the concept of God. An interesting read for anyone who wants to explore religion and personal beliefs that are different than societal norms.
