Book excerpt: L'objectif de ce travail a été la préparation de nouveaux hybrides de métaux de transition 3d (Co et Fe) et 4f (Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd et Ho)par le procédé polyol. Les composés préparés dans le diéthylèneglycol (degH2) et formulés comme CoTRCI(deg)2, présentent une structure formée pa des chaines 1D reliées entre eux par des interactions de Van der Waals faibles. Les mesures magnétiques enregistrées sur ces hybrides confirment l'absence d'ordre magnétique à grande distance et la présence d'interactions antiferromagnétiques faibles entre les cations Co2+ et TR3+. De même, le composé formulé comme CoCI(degH) présente une structure OD. Des unités tétramériques CouI)4C14(degH)4, formées grâce à la connexion par les arêtes de quatre octaèdre! ‘CoO4C1' constituent des nano-clusters OD isolés, agencés dans le réseau tétragonal centré. Il n'y a priori pas d'ordre magnétique 3D dans ce composé, mais des interactions antiferromagnétiques cantés au sein de chaque cluster ont pu être mises en évidence. Enfin, les composés préparés dans l'éthylèneglycol (egH2)et formulés comme Co(eg), Fe(eg) et CoFe2(eg)3, présentent une structure 2D. Le composé au cobalt seul cristallise dans une maille de type brucite, où les cations Co2+ sont disposés dans des polyèdres octaédriques d'atomes d'oxygène, forment l'essentiel des feuillets inorganiques. Les composés à base de fer adoptent eux une structure de type hydrozincite, dans laquelle les cations divalents occupent les sites tétraédriques et octaédriques des feuillets inorganiques. Les mesures magnétiques réalisées sur ces échantillons traduisent l'installation d'un ordre magnétique à basse température ferromagnétique pour le composé à base de Co et antiferromagnétique pour les hybrides à base de Fe et de Fe/Co. Les composés, préparés aussi dans l'éthylèneglycol (egH2), formulés comme Eus(eg)6(Ac)3, présentent quant à eux une structure poreuse. Les propriétés magnétocaloriques cryogéniques de tous les composés ont été évaluées, avec un focus sur les composés ne présentent pas d'ordre magnétique à basse température. En comparant les valeurs de la variation de l'entropie magnétique mesurées à T = 2 K pour un champ magnétique de poH = 5 T, à celles des meilleurs composés moléculaires de la littérature dédiée à la réfrigération magnétique, Le composé CoGdCI(deg)2 dont la valeur de -ASm atteint 30 J Kg-1 K-1 (69 mJ cm-3K-1), dans ces conditions de mesures, apparait comme un réfrigérant de choix.

Book excerpt: Molecular magnets show many properties not met in conventional metallic magnetic materials, i.e. low density, transparency to electromagnetic radiation, sensitivity to external stimuli such as light, pressure, temperature, chemical modification or magnetic/electric fields, and others. They can serve as “functional” materials in sensors of different types or be applied in high-density magnetic storage or nanoscale devices. Research into molecule-based materials became more intense at the end of the 20th century and is now an important branch of modern science. The articles in this Special Issue, written by physicists and chemists, reflect the current work on molecular magnets being carried out in several research centers. Theoretical papers in the issue concern the influence of spin anisotropy in the low dimensional lattice of the resulting type of magnet, as well as thermodynamics and magnetic excitations in spin trimers. The impact of external pressure on structural and magnetic properties and its underlying mechanisms is described using the example of Prussian blue analogue data. The other functionality discussed is the magnetocaloric effect, investigated in coordination polymers and high spin clusters. In this issue, new molecular magnets are presented: (i) ferromagnetic high-spin [Mn6] single-molecule magnets, (ii) solvatomagnetic compounds changing their structure and magnetism dependent on water content, and (iii) a family of purely organic magnetic materials. Finally, an advanced calorimetric study of anisotropy in magnetic molecular superconductors is reviewed.
