Book excerpt: Gloucestershire 2: The Vale and the Forest of Dean and its companion, Gloucestershire I: The Cotswolds, provide a lively and uniquely comprehensive guide to the architecture of Gloucestershire. Alan Brooks's extensively revised and expanded editions of David Verey's original volumes bring together the latest research on a county unusually rich in attractive and interesting buildings. The area covered lies on both sides of the River Severn, rising from flat alluvial lands to the lower slopes of the Cotswold Escarpment on the east and the rough wooded hills of the Forest of Dean on the Welsh border, with its distinctive industrial inheritance. Architecture is generally more varied and unpredictable than in the Cotswolds: stone, timber, brick and stucco all have local strongholds. The Vale is most famous for its two great churches, Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey, both Norman buildings with brilliantly inventive late medieval modifications. The other major settlement is the spa town of Cheltenham, with its fine parades of Regency terraces. Country houses include Thornbury Castle, greatest of Early Tudor private houses, timber-framed manors such as Preston Court, and the extravagantly Neo-Gothic Toddington; churches range from the enigmatic Anglo-Saxon pair at Deerhurst to Randall Wells's Arts-and-Crafts experiment at Kempley. Amongst the memorable post-war landmarks are the suspension bridges and nuclear power stations on the banks of the Severn, and Aztec West, one of the best British business parks, on the northern fringes of Bristol. Visitors and residents alike will find their understanding and enjoyment of west Gloucestershire transformed by this book.

Book Synopsis Locating the Industrial Revolution by : Eric L. Jones
Download or read book Locating the Industrial Revolution written by Eric L. Jones and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The familiar industrialisation of northern England and less familiar de-industrialisation of the south are shown to have depended on a common process. Neither rise nor decline resulted from differences in natural resource endowments, since they began before the use of coal and steam in manufacturing. Instead, political certainty, competitive ideology and Enlightenment optimism encouraged investment in transport and communications. This integrated the national market, intensifying competition between regions and altering economic distributions. Despite a dysfunctional landed system, agricultural innovation meant that the south's comparative advantage shifted towards the farm sector. Meanwhile its manufactures slowly declined. Once industry clustered in the less-benign northern environment, technological changes in manufacturing accumulated there. This book portrays the Industrial Revolution as deriving from economic competition within unique political arrangements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1986, develops the story of American woollen manufacture reaching far back in time to establish the very traditional nature of the fabrication of woollen cloths. Although traditional techniques changed slowly, particularly in England, circumstances and conditions changed rapidly in the United States during the Napoleonic Wars. Americans had more surplus capital to invest; they had abundant natural resources; and many American merchants and manufacturers sought independence from European goods and services. This title will be of interest to students of economic and American history.
Book Synopsis HISTORY OF THE PREEN FAMILY VOLUME THREE KINGS STANLEY GROUP by : Susan Laflin
Download or read book HISTORY OF THE PREEN FAMILY VOLUME THREE KINGS STANLEY GROUP written by Susan Laflin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-08-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PREEN FAMILY HISTORY STUDY GROUP exists to research the family. It organises an Annual Reunion and is preparing a History of the Preen Family in four volumes. DNA analysis has shown that the Preen Family is divided into three groups, each with a common ancestor in the seventeenth century. Volume One will discuss the early history of the family and then Volumes Two to Four will each cover one of the three groups. This book is Volume Three describing the Kings Stanley Group. They are descended from John and Margery Preen who lived in Stone in the 1600s and the book traces their descendants as they spread throughout the Gloucestershire and later throughout the world. It ends with the families who appeared in the 1911 census. For more details of the Group, see our website www.preen.org.uk
