Book Synopsis Glossolalia and the Problem of Language by : Nicholas Harkness
Download or read book Glossolalia and the Problem of Language written by Nicholas Harkness and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking in tongues, also known as glossolalia, has long been a subject of curiosity as well as vigorous theological debate. A worldwide phenomenon that spans multiple Christian traditions, glossolalia is both celebrated as a supernatural gift and condemned as semiotic alchemy. For some it is mystical speech that exceeds what words can do, and for others it is mere gibberish, empty of meaning. At the heart of these differences is glossolalia’s puzzling relationship to language. ? Glossolalia and the Problem of Language investigates speaking in tongues in South Korea, where it is practiced widely across denominations and congregations. Nicholas Harkness shows how the popularity of glossolalia in Korea lies at the intersection of numerous, often competing social forces, interwoven religious legacies, and spiritual desires that have been amplified by Christianity’s massive institutionalization. As evangelicalism continues to spread worldwide, Glossolalia and the Problem of Language analyzes one of its most enigmatic practices while marking a major advancement in our understanding of the power of language and its limits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is practiced in many different religions around the world. Dismissed as meaningless gibberish by some observers, it has been the subject of only a few fragmentary studies. The work of Felicitas D. Goodman represents the first cross-cultural analysis of this enigmatic behavior, and she brings to her research an extensive background in linguistics and anthropology. Dr. Goodman's fieldwork included living with apostolic congregations in Mexico City, in the Yucatan with Maya Indians, and visits with a congregation in Hammond, Indiana. Her observations were preserved on a remarkable collection of sound recordings and films. For this book she presents a selection of conversion stories that highlights the personality structure and experiences of the speakers. A detailed analysis of the phonological and suprasegmental features of the recorded utterances show a surprising cross-cultural agreement. This led Goodman to believe that glossolalists speak the way they do because their speech behavior is modified in a particular mental state, often termed trance, into which they place themselves. In this light the glossolalia utterance is seen as an artifact of a hyperaroused mental state, or, in Chomskyan terms, as the surface structure of a nonlinguistic deep structure, that of the altered state of consciousness. Goodman describes the hyperaroused mental state as a neurophysiological phenomenon, as well as the associated patterns of movement, and the problems of waking from it. Goodman's diachronic approach yielded equally surprising data about the changes and the waning of the behavior over time. But, as she observes, "we have barely touched the edge of a very large area of inquiry." Her fascinating study opens a number of new avenues of research for anthropologists, such as the study of physiological states accompanying linguistic and ritual behavior.

Book Synopsis Charismatic Glossolalia by : Mark J. Cartledge
Download or read book Charismatic Glossolalia written by Mark J. Cartledge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the nature and function of the Pentecostal/Charismatic gift of speaking in tongues? Charismatic Glossolalia aims to answer this question. Drawing on detailed observations and interviews with people who themselves speak in tongues, as well as survey data, Cartledge presents explanations on the meaning of this gift for both the participants and their churches. Cartledge argues that an understanding of the gift of speaking in tongues emerges as a symbol of divine-human encounter, especially associated with the context of prayer and worship and symbolising a sense of beauty, awe, power, intimacy and faith-building. In theological terms, speaking in tongues may be described as trinitarian, sacramental and as demonstrating an important feature of the Kingdom of God. An extensive literature review considers material from the New Testament, Pentecostal and Charismatic theology, and the behavioural and social sciences. This book offers a unique contribution to Pentecostal and Charismatic scholarship, as well as the emerging scholarly tradition of Practical Theology.

Book Synopsis Glossolalia by : Deceased Andrei Bely
Download or read book Glossolalia written by Deceased Andrei Bely and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2003 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrei Bely was one of the most prolific poets, novelists, and theoreticians among the Russian Symbolists. Engaged throughout his life with the essence of language, his thoughts and findings emerge repeatedly in his essays and novels. None of his writings on the subject, however, are as remarkable and multi-faceted as this Poem about Sound. Glossolalia is a complex examination of philology, philosophy, esoterica, and poetry, all in search of the relationship between sound and sense. It reverberates with sound associations and transcends all boundaries of language, discipline, and tradition. It is simultaneously a treatise on the origins of language and the world's creation through the movements of sounds. Bely reenacts, through the mouth, the cosmology of Rudolf Steiner. Bely's work, in its bold attempt to invoke the "living word," remains one of the most far-reaching poetic experiments of the twentieth Century, and this edition offers his fascinating text for the first time in both an English and a German translation, along with the original Russian version and an in-depth commentary by Thomas R. Beyer. Illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTENSELY CONTROVERSIAL!This tough and gritty book is straight from the trenches of the war over the Pentecostal phenomenon of Speaking in Tongues today. Taking no prisoners the author takes on many of the most divisive aspects of the modern Speaking in Tongues phenomenon. No punches are left out and no side on this very controversial subject are safe from this scalding book of insights. The book points out some startling misuses and abuses that need to be considered when determining if Tongues are for Christians today. This book is a must for those who think they have heard it all from all sides on this issue, but feel unsatisfied. In it is presented some unusual thoughts, radical approaches, and new understanding of the topic of Tongues. Though not a Biblical study, this book shares some very unorthodox personal insights to the subject. As coarse as it is towards conventional understandings of Tongues, this book does not condemn the practice, just the presumptions. Pentecostals will be surprised how there actually is more to Tongues than meets the ears.Conservative Christians will be stunned at how frank the discussion is regarding Speaking in Tongues. The overall tone is one of getting one's act together whichever side you land on the issues of Tongues. Such points are made that if you are going to practice Speaking in Tongues, at least know what you are doing, and be aware of how God treats the phenomenon. One thing is for certain. You have never heard many of these thoughts before! Whether you love or hate this book, no doubt you will have some new things to consider regarding Speaking in Tongues today.Considering how explosively controversial this book is, I call it, "Shock and Awe" for today's Pentecostal.Excerpt's from the book: The Pentecostal mindset at best is to have pity on those not 'Filled with the Spirit', or statements like, "It's their loss". I can't say I've ever heard a Pentecostal say it was a loss to the Body of Christ, or the ministry of Holy Spirit. Many claim ecstatic experiences, near death experiences or other religious and unusual phenomenon such as an awareness of a presence, spiritual visions, unusual vocalizations, etc. But stimulating the temporal lobe regions of the human brain with mild magnetic current can artificially induce many of those phenomena. The atheist Michael Persinger has produced some fascinating research with his so-called "God Helmet".The results of several brain scan studies concluded Speaking in Tongues did not involve the speech areas of the brain. The precise area affected was unclear in its purpose, but I believe the act of Speaking in Tongues, privately in particular, reflects a pliable mental state similar to deep meditation. The repetitive sounds certainly resemble the practice of chanting, but seem more deliberate.Regardless of its veracity, Speaking in Tongues is perceived by many outside Pentecostal circles as an object receiving excessive attention, possibly qualifying as an icon of idolatry as others outside Orthodoxy consider images of Mary and saints as such. Though considered irrelevant by many, sacrilegious by others, the audio qualities of Speaking in Tongues have been evaluated in modern times from a scientific perspective. It is apparent to me Speaking in Tongues in general is best understood as 'stimulus' such as a kitten kneading (massaging) its mother's breast to encourage milk production. That is to say expressions of Speaking in Tongues are submissive postures before God, stimulating the grace of God to actively fall. I have witnessed the mentally ill Speak in Tongues, as a frightening manifestation of demonic activity, while the same person, and same audible sounds, while under the Anointing of the Holy Spirit, spoke praises to God.
Download or read book Tongues written by Richard Hogue and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every critic who desires to deny the validity of modern tongue speech must develop a scheme to destroy Paul's teaching.Through the centuries, there has been a wide variety of answers regarding the validity and veracity of speaking, praying, and singing in tongues, and its place within the life of the Christian and the Church. What is it? Is speaking in tongues such a radically supernatural experience that language is totally unknown, or is it, as some have contended, actual human languages that are simply unknown to the speakers? Several have believed it to be the language of heaven or at least from heaven. Others have declared it to be ecstatic, unintelligible utterances that require a highly charged emotional moment to experience. Should each Christian pray and sing in tongues, or is it reserved for a special few deeply spiritual ones? Did Jesus pray in tongues? These questions and more are answered by author and pastor Richard Hogue inTongues: A Theological History of Christian Glossolalia. His academic approach begins by firmly establishing biblical evidence before launching a chronological connect-the-dots exercise through Christian history. The design revealed is the undeniable influence of the Holy Spirit. From Saul of Tarsus to John Wesley, from Pentecost to Azusa Street, Richard Hogue follows the gift of tongues and clearly draws a picture of today's role of the Holy Spirit inTongues: A Theological History of Christian Glossolalia.

Book Synopsis The Charismatic Gymnasium by : Maria José de Abreu
Download or read book The Charismatic Gymnasium written by Maria José de Abreu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Charismatic Gymnasium Maria José de Abreu examines how Charismatic Catholicism in contemporary Brazil produces a new form of total power through a concatenation of the breathing body, theology, and electronic mass media. De Abreu documents a vast religious respiratory program of revival popularly branded as “the aerobics of Jesus.” Pneuma—the Greek term for air, breath, and spirit—is central to this aerobic program, whose goal is to labor on the athletic elasticity of spirit. Tracing the rhetoric, gestures, and spaces that together constitute this new theological community, de Abreu exposes the articulating forces among evangelical Christianity, neoliberal logics, and the rise of right-wing politics. By calling attention to how an ethics of pauperism vitally intersects with the neoliberal ethos of flexibility, de Abreu shows how paradoxes do not hinder but expand the Charismatic gymnasium. The result, de Abreu demonstrates, is the production of a fluid form of totalitarianism and Christianity in Brazil and beyond.

Book Synopsis Black Bodies and Transhuman Realities by : Melvin G. Hill
Download or read book Black Bodies and Transhuman Realities written by Melvin G. Hill and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Bodies and Transhuman Realities: Scientifically Modifying the Black Body in Posthuman Literature and Culture makes a series of valuable contributions to ongoing dialogues surrounding posthuman blackness and Afro-transhumanism. The collection explores the Black body (self) in the context of transhuman realities from a variety of literary and artistic perspectives. These points of view convey the cultural, political, social, and historical implications that frame the space of Black embodiment, functioning as sites of potentiality and pointing toward the possibility of a transcendental Black subjectivity. In this book, many questions concerning the transformation of the Black body are presented as parallels to philosophical and religious inquiries that have traditionally been addressed from a hegemonic viewpoint. The chapters demonstrate how literature, based on its historical and social contexts, contributes to broader thought about Black transcendence of subjectivity in a posthuman framework, exploring interpretations of the “old” and visions of the “new” human.

Book excerpt: The pieces of a satisfying novel or story seem to fit together so effortlessly, so seamlessly, that it's easy to find yourself wondering, "How on earth did the author do this?" The answer is simple: He sat alone at his desk, considered an array of options, and made smart, careful choices. In On Writing Fiction, award-winning author and respected creative writing professor David Jauss offers practical information and advice that will help you make smart creative and technical decisions about such topics as: • Writing prose with syntax and rhythm to create a "soundtrack" for the narrative • Choosing the right point of view to create the appropriate degree of "distance" between your characters and the reader • Harnessing the power of contradiction in the creative process In one thought-provoking essay after another, Jauss sorts through unique fiction-writing conundrums, including how to create those exquisite intersections between truth and fabrication that make all great works of fiction so much more resonant than fiction that follows the "write what you know" approach that's so often used.
