Der Grund für diesen Trend lässt sich vor allem auf die Veränderung durch den Wandel unserer Gesellschaft, welche sich von einer Industriegesellschaft hin zu einer kommunikationsintensiven Dienstleistungsgesellschaft entwickelt hat, zurückführen. Früher galt der Fokus der Unternehmen mehr der Produktherstellung und nicht der Wahrnehmung des Menschen als ein Wesen mit Bedürfnissen. Parallel zu diesem Trend entwickelten sich die Mitarbeiter zunehmend zu einer entscheidenden Erfolgsvariable. Durch die Veränderungen in den Produktionsprozessen nahmen nämlich auf der einen Seite die körperlichen Belastungen ab, andererseits stieg die psychische Belastung der Mitarbeiter beispielsweise durch hohen Zeitdruck, einer zu hohen Verantwortung oder gar einer Überforderung durch die Arbeitsmenge drastisch. Ein daraus resultierender Anstieg von Fehlzeiten, einer erhöhten Fehlquote und deutliche Leistungsdefizite stellen nicht nur eine Problematik für die Mitarbeiter, sondern auch für das Unternehmen dar. Bei Betrachtung der Arbeitszufriedenheit auf Europaebene lässt sich dies erkennen. Die Durchschnittsbewertung bezüglich Arbeitszufriedenheit liegt bei 5,5 von 10, während Österreich gemeinsam mit Deutschland das Schlusslicht bildet. Im Gegensatz zu diesem Resultat geben 70% der Amerikaner an, mit der vorhandenen Work-Life-Balance mehr als zufrieden zu sein. Um diese Gefahr der Arbeitsunzufriedenheit zu meiden, ist eine richtige Gestaltung der Unternehmenskultur mit entsprechenden Anreizen von essentieller Bedeutung, wobei das unternehmerische Ziel der Gewinnmaximierung, aber auch die Bedürfnisse und Interessen von Mitarbeitenden nicht in Vergessenheit geraten dürfen. Forschungsfrage: Wie lassen sich attraktive Anreizsysteme global im Vergleich zu Vorarlberg so gestalten, dass eine Motivations- und Effizienzsteigerung auf Mitarbeiterebene herbeigeführt wird? Zu Beginn wird zunächst einmal der Motivationsprozess, die intrinsische und extrinsische Motivation und die Bedürfnispyramide nach Maslow erläutert. Anschließend wird auf die Umsetzung des betrieblichen Anreizsystems der global agierenden Firma Omicron in Vorarlberg eingegangen, bevor dann das weitere Augenmerk auf den globalen Unternehmensmarkt gelegt wird.

The study introduces technologies that can balance electricity in energy systems and that can serve as enabling technologies for the integration of large quantities of renewable energies in the power supply system. It begins with a discussion of normative aims for the future electricity system before continuing with a description of current policies and political developments and an overview of relevant existing energy system studies. These sections serve as background for the remainder of the study. They are followed by discussion and analysis of the growing demand for means to balance the fluctuations found in electricity generated in power systems with a high penetration of renewable energies, the potentials of diverse technologies, requirements for electrical networks, economic impacts and important legal issues. Finally, the main challenges to the achievement of developing balancing technologies and processes for renewable electricity-dominant systems are summarised and recommendations made.

Book excerpt: Two stars of contemporary architecture explore the unique handling of light and heat in the architecture of Burkina Faso Across the African continent, but especially in the sub-Saharan regions, the light has a particularly stark quality, which becomes most apparent in relation to older buildings. Before electricity, architecture was required to make use of the sun as a light source within a building, while also protecting its inhabitants from the heat. This resulted in vernacular architecture that features very few or small openings, which consequently render the inside of a building near pitch black, while the outside is illuminated by sunshine that bears down mercilessly. On the initiative of the lighting technology company Zumtobel Group, photographer Iwan Baan (born 1975) and architect Francis Kéré (born 1965) set out to capture how the sun's natural light cycle shapes vernacular architecture in Burkina Faso with little to no artificial light sources. They traveled to three exemplary locations: communal compounds in Gando; the main mosque of Bobo Dioulasso; and the terraced houses in Dano. Baan's pictures are accompanied by architectural sketches by Francis Kéré, who himself grew up in this light environment and whose architecture is inspired by it. The stunning photographs are printed using a special technique, to give a sense of being immersed in the very light conditions documented here.

Will a policy save one life, or one thousand lives? Will it impose costs on consumers, and if so, will the costs be high or negligible? Will it hurt workers and small businesses, and, if so, precisely how much? As the Obama administration's “regulatory czar,” Sunstein knows his subject in both theory and practice. Drawing on behavioral economics and his well-known emphasis on “nudging,” he celebrates the cost-benefit revolution in policy making, tracing its defining moments in the Reagan, Clinton, and Obama administrations (and pondering its uncertain future in the Trump administration).
