Book excerpt: Lesley Dilcock, with the help of Catherine Gratwicke's glorious photographs, displays unusual combinations of old and new, exotic and everyday, and shows how to mix ingredients from different cultures around the world with creative flair and panache -- without breaking the bank. in Global Style, Lesley celebrates different color palettes, textures, surfaces, and textiles from as far afield as India, Africa, and the Far East. The style can be built up from a single object -- a hand-crafted African bowl, a length of Japanese silk -- or it can be inspired by nothing more tangible than a mood or color -- the heady atmosphere of the Moroccan souk or the earthy tones of an Indian bazaar.

Book excerpt: From the civil rights and Black Power era of the 1960s through antiapartheid activism in the 1980s and beyond, black women have used their clothing, hair, and style not simply as a fashion statement but as a powerful tool of resistance. Whether using stiletto heels as weapons to protect against police attacks or incorporating African-themed designs into everyday wear, these fashion-forward women celebrated their identities and pushed for equality. In this thought-provoking book, Tanisha C. Ford explores how and why black women in places as far-flung as New York City, Atlanta, London, and Johannesburg incorporated style and beauty culture into their activism. Focusing on the emergence of the "soul style" movement—represented in clothing, jewelry, hairstyles, and more—Liberated Threads shows that black women's fashion choices became galvanizing symbols of gender and political liberation. Drawing from an eclectic archive, Ford offers a new way of studying how black style and Soul Power moved beyond national boundaries, sparking a global fashion phenomenon. Following celebrities, models, college students, and everyday women as they moved through fashion boutiques, beauty salons, and record stores, Ford narrates the fascinating intertwining histories of Black Freedom and fashion.

This book is a celebration of Westbrook’s style on and off the court, and the creative people he admires and works with. This book was created with three different covers designed by Raymond Pettibon and will be shipped to customers at random. Russell Westbrook, a reigning two-time NBA All-Star MVP, is not your average basketball superstar. Apart from his meteoric rise within the ranks of the NBA, Westbrook is a creative force prominently known and admired by the fashion industry and his fan base for his daring sartorial experimentation and love of all things fashion. Whether he is seen at the front row of a runway show during Milan Fashion Week, within the pages of Vogue, GQ, and the New York Times style section, or collaborating with Barneys New York or the Jordan brand, Westbrook has garnered the reputation of being the NBA’s real fashion insider. This book is a collection of stylish and inspiring images and text that provide a rare glimpse into Westbrook’s world, revealing how he uses style as a psychological weapon on and off the court and how he has redefined the role of a contemporary athlete turned cultural figure. From photographs documenting his bold and cutting-edge outfits worn during the playoffs to images of his collaborations with global style brands and original quotes and interviews with fellow athletes, designers, and creative figures that inspire Westbrook, this book explores how to be fearless and confident in fashion and in life, what it means to be stylish, and the importance of authenticity in everything from style and music to art and business. This all-access volume is an essential for his fans and readers interested in sports, style, design, and popular culture.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A style is any pattern we see in a person's way of accomplishing a particular type of task. The "task" of interest in the present context is education-learning and remembering in school and transferring what is learned to the world outside of school. Teachers are expressing some sort of awareness of style when they observe a particular action taken by a particular student and then say something like: "This doesn't surprise me! That's just the way he is. " Observation of a single action cannot reveal a style. One's impres sion of a person's style is abstracted from multiple experiences of the person under similar circumstances. In education, if we understand the styles of individual students, we can often anticipate their perceptions and subsequent behaviors, anticipate their misunderstandings, take ad vantage of their strengths, and avoid (or correct) their weaknesses. These are some of the goals of the present text. In the first chapter, I present an overview of the terminology and research methods used by various authors of the text. Although they differ a bit with regard to meanings ascribed to certain terms or with regard to conclusions drawn from certain types of data, there is none theless considerable agreement, especially when one realizes that they represent three different continents and five different nationalities.

Summary Imagine web apps with fast browser load times that also offer amazing developer productivity and require less code to create. That’s what Svelte and Sapper deliver! Svelte pushes a lot of the work a frontend framework would handle to the compile step, so your app components come out as tight, well-organized JavaScript modules. Sapper is a lightweight web framework that minimizes application size through server-rendering front pages and only loading the JavaScript you need. The end result is more efficient apps with great UX and simplified state management. Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications. About the technology Many web frameworks load hundreds of “just-in-case” code lines that clutter and slow your apps. Svelte, an innovative, developer-friendly tool, instead compiles applications to very small bundles for lightning-fast load times that do more with less code. Pairing Svelte with the Sapper framework adds features for flexible and simple page routing, server-side rendering, static site development, and more.
