Book Synopsis Innovative Technologies In Urban Drainage (NOVATECH'2001) by : E. Brelot
Download or read book Innovative Technologies In Urban Drainage (NOVATECH'2001) written by E. Brelot and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOVATECH conferences are one of the most important conference series in the world on innovative technologies in urban drainage. Scientists and technicians meet over three days to share experiences from different continents, to see the most significant advances on this subject and to discover some innovative and original ideas, which are likely to be developed in the coming years. During NOVATECH '2001, nearly 130 authors presented papers and 430 people from 34 countries took part. From the papers presented, 15 papers have been selected by the international scientific committee to be published in this special issue; the authors have been allowed to enhance their paper to offer more complete information; these papers are representative of the quality and the subject of NOVATECH. The main topics developed during NOVATECH?2001 were: global strategies of stormwater management; best management practices techniques (source control, detention basin and retention / infiltration ponds); sewer systems and physical processes under wet weather conditions (hydraulic and transport of solids); treatment of urban wet weather effluents; and data acquisition, tools for studies, analysis and real time control management of drainage systems. These proceedings provide an essential reference for engineers, researchers and planners working on the problems of urban drainage and looking for new solutions.
Book Synopsis Metrology in Urban Drainage and Stormwater Management by : Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski
Download or read book Metrology in Urban Drainage and Stormwater Management written by Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the advancements made in applied metrology in the field of Urban Drainage and Storm water Management over the past two decades in scientific research as well as in practical applications. Given the broadness of this subject (measuring principles, uncertainty in data, data validation, data storage and communication, design, maintenance and management of monitoring networks, technical details of sensor technology), the focus is on water quantity and a sound metrological basis. The book offers common ground for academics and practitioners when setting up monitoring projects in urban drainage and storm water management. This will enable an easier exchange of results so as to allow for a faster scientific progress in the field. A second, but equally important goal, is to allow practitioners access to scientific developments and gained experience when it comes to monitoring urban drainage and storm water systems. In-depth descriptions of international case studies covering all aspects discussed in the book are presented, along with self-training exercises and codes available for readers on a companion website.
Book Synopsis Urban Water Systems & Floods II by : S. Hernández
Download or read book Urban Water Systems & Floods II written by S. Hernández and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing an improved understanding of emerging flood risk management and urban water management was the goal set for research presented at the 6th International Conference on Flood and Urban Water Management, held in A Coruña, Spain. The published papers look to solve various challenges in this field by drawing on the expertise of numerous disciplines and considering a range of responses. Flooding is a global phenomenon that claims numerous lives worldwide each year. When flooding occurs in urban areas, it can cause substantial damage to property as well as threaten human life. In addition, many more people must endure the homelessness, upset and disruption that are left in the wake of floods. The increased frequency of flooding in the last few years, coupled with climate change predictions and urban development, suggest that these impacts are set to worsen in the future. How we respond and importantly, adapt to these challenges is key to developing our long-term resilience at the property, community and city scale. Apart from the physical damage to buildings, contents and loss of life, which are the most obvious, impacts of floods upon households, other more indirect losses are often overlooked. These indirect and intangible impacts are generally associated with disruption to normal life as well as long-term health issues including community displacements and stress-related illnesses. Flooding represents a major barrier to the alleviation of poverty in many parts of the developing world, where vulnerable communities are often exposed to sudden and life-threatening events. As our cities continue to expand, their urban infrastructures need to be re-evaluated and adapted to new requirements related to the increase in population and the growing areas under urbanization. The papers contained in this book consider these problems and deals with two main urban water topics: water supply systems and urban drainage.

The conference?s primary goal is to offer a forum for promoting discussions amongst scientists and professionals on the interrelationships between the entire water cycle, environment and society.
Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
