Download or read book Tides written by Jonathan White and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White takes readers across the globe to discover the science and spirit of ocean tides. In the Arctic, White shimmies under the ice with an Inuit elder to hunt for mussels in the dark cavities left behind at low tide; in China, he races the Silver Dragon, a twenty-five-foot tidal bore that crashes eighty miles up the Qiantang River; in France, he interviews the monks that live in the tide-wrapped monastery of Mont Saint-Michel; in Chile and Scotland, he investigates the growth of tidal power generation; and in Panama and Venice, he delves into how the threat of sea level rise is changing human culture—the very old and very new. Tides combines lyrical prose, colorful adventure travel, and provocative scientific inquiry into the elemental, mysterious paradox that keeps our planet’s waters in constant motion. Photographs, scientific figures, line drawings, and sixteen color photos dramatically illustrate this engaging, expert tour of the tides.

Book Synopsis Tides and the Ocean by : William Thomson
Download or read book Tides and the Ocean written by William Thomson and published by Black Dog & Leventhal. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surfers, sailors, and anyone who loves the ocean will enjoy this visual exploration of the world's seas along its shores, including rip tides, swells, waves, and tsunamis. Tide is the vertical motion of water, something so subtle it is impossible to see with the naked eye. Inspired by his travels around the world's coastline in a camper van with his young family, William Thomson captures the cycles of the sea's movement, and intersperses his adventures surfing the waves and charting the tides. Throughout Tides and the Ocean are his graphic renderings of unusual tidal maps, as well as other forms of water movement, including rip, rapids, swell, stream, tide, wave, whirlpool, and tsunami. Tides and the Ocean explains how the tides surge when the moon and sun align with the earth; how ocean streams alternate direction every six hours (which is invaluable information for kayakers, paddle boarders, and fishermen); why skyscraper-sized tsunamis occur frequently in an Alaskan Bay; and the most deadly beach orientation for rip currents. Also emphasized throughout is the importance of keeping the world's oceans healthy and full of life. Published in time for beach travel, this large-format hardcover is ideal for anyone who knows and loves the sea, and who wants to understand, discover, surf, or sail it better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... as soon as one has traversed the greater part of the wild sea, one comes upon such a huge quantity of ice that nowhere in the whole world has the like been known." "This ice is of a wonderful nature. It lies at times quite still, as one would expect, with openings or large fjords in it; but sometimes its movement is so strong and rapid as to equal that of a ship running before the wind, and it drifts against the wind as often as with it." Kongespeilet - 1250 A.D. ("The Mirror of Kings") Modern societies require increasing amounts influence on the water mass and on the resulting of scientific information about the environment total environment of the region; therefore, cer tain of its characteristics will necessarily be in whieh they live and work. For the seas this information must describe the air above the sea, included.
Book Synopsis Earth’s Rotation from Eons to Days by : Peter Brosche
Download or read book Earth’s Rotation from Eons to Days written by Peter Brosche and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth's Rotation from Eons to Days reviews long-term changes, methods of measurement, and the major influences on rotation parameters. In order to understand secular changes, the momentary behavior of ocean tides must be analyzed and appropriately modelled. Researchers and students in astronomy and all fields of geosciences will find a wealth of information related to the interaction of geophysical phenomena and the rotation of the planet Earth.

Book Synopsis Modelling Coastal Sea Processes: Proceedings Of The International Ocean And Atmosphere Pacific Conference by : John Noye
Download or read book Modelling Coastal Sea Processes: Proceedings Of The International Ocean And Atmosphere Pacific Conference written by John Noye and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-11-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains updated, reviewed versions of the best papers on “Modelling Coastal Sea Processes” presented at the International Ocean and Atmosphere Pacific Conference, held in Adelaide, South Australia, on 23-27 October 1995. The articles were selected on both scientific merit and usefulness to coastal engineers, physical oceanographers and marine biologists. They cover a range of topics including the modelling of tides and storm surges (especially inundation due to surges), the analysis of modelled or recorded data to permit prediction of tide heights over tidal flats and tidal currents in the presence of coastal eddies, and the modelling of dispersion of fish larvae from spawning grounds to coastal nurseries. Computational techniques are emphasised in line with modern applications, but some analytical techniques have also been included.
Book Synopsis Geodetic Features of the Ocean Surface and their Implications by : G. Seeber
Download or read book Geodetic Features of the Ocean Surface and their Implications written by G. Seeber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the papers which were presented at the Interdisciplinary Symposium No. 4 "Geodetic Features of the Ocean Surface and their Implications" during the XVIII. General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) in Hamburg, August 1983. The symposium was jointly sponsored by the International Associ ation of Geodesy (lAG) and the International Association for the Physi cal Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO), and was as such one further step in animpQrtant line of international and interdisciplinary symposia, re lated to the field of Marine Geodesy. Originally the term "Marine Geodesy" was widely understood as "Geodesy in the Marine Environment" and dealt primarily with two as pects: precise position determination at sea and determination of a fine structured marine geoid. However, mainly with the impact of satel lite radar altimeter measurements, a new understanding began to develop: it became evident that the field of Marine Geodesy could not be treated adequately from geodesists alone but that it needed close cooperation with related disciplines such as oceanography and marine geophysics. Symposium No. 4 at Hamburg could demonstrate that this coopera tion has already become a lively reality. The "geodetic features of the ocean surface" don't only reflect oceanographical but also marine geo physical aspects. As such scientists from geodesy, oceanography, marine geology and geophysics came together to present their ideas and to dis cuss questions of mutual interest.

Book Synopsis Earth Rotation: Solved and Unsolved Problems by : Anny Cazenave
Download or read book Earth Rotation: Solved and Unsolved Problems written by Anny Cazenave and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for organl.zl.ng an Advanced Research Workshop entirely devoted to the Earth rotation was born in 1983 when Professor Raymond Hide suggested this topic to the special NATO panel of global transport mechanism in the Geosciences. Such a specialized meeting did not take place since the GEOP research conference on the rotation of the Earth and polar motion which was held at the Ohio State University (USA) in 1973. In the last ten years, highly precise measurements of the Earth's rotation parameters and new global geophysical data have become available allowing major advance to be made in the under standing of the various irregularities affecting the Earth's rotation. The aim of the workshop was to bring together scientists who have made important contributions in this field during the last decade both at the observational and geophysical interpretation levels. The confe rence was divided into four main topics. The first session was dedicated to the definition, implementation and maintenance of the terrestrial and celestial reference systems. A few critical points have been identified as requiring further improvements: (i) appro priate selection of terrestrial sites recognized for their long term stability, (ii) determination of the relationship between terrestrial and celestial references systems as well as between the various terrestrial ones, (iii) improvment of the theory of a rotating elastic earth (the recently adopted theory needs already some corrections').
