Book excerpt: Global Women's Entrepreneurship Research responds to recent calls from academic researchers and policy analysts alike to pay greater attention to the diversity and heterogeneity among women entrepreneurs. Drawing together studies by 26 researchers affiliated with the DIANA International Research Network, this collection contributes to a richer and more robust understanding of the field. Part I: 'Diverse Settings' introduces research set in a range of contexts, from those rarely examined to those representing more familiar terrains. Part II: 'Diverse Questions' explores new questions and reframes old questions in fresh, innovative ways. Part III: 'Diverse Approaches' features studies with distinct methodological approaches that reflect and extend the rigour and creativity of research in this field. Together, the research assembled in this volume significantly advances knowledge about women's entrepreneurship around the world. While the book's primary audience is academic researchers and graduate students working in the areas of women's entrepreneurship, as well as entrepreneurship and family business more generally, it will also be of interest to scholars working in related research areas in the sociology of gender, work and organizations. Policy-makers in government and non-government agencies as well as profit and not-for-profit organizations that provide services to, or conduct research on, women entrepreneurs will also benefit greatly from the insights provided in this unique volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the nature, challenges and successful cases of female entrepreneurship in Iran. The first part of the book provides a comprehensive insight into Iran’s entrepreneurship ecosystem and its accessibility for women by exploring and analyzing data from relevant national and international sources, in particular from the Statistical Center of Iran, Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, World Bank (Doing Business, Gender Equality and Development), World Economic Forum (Global Gender Gap Report, Global Competitiveness Report), and the United Nations Development Plan. Trends in entrepreneurial perceptions and intentions, as well as developments in entrepreneurial activity in Iran from 2008 to 2013, are also studied for both genders. In order to establish a benchmark for the relative position of Iranian women in the region, the main related indices are also compared to those in Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. In turn, the second part of the book highlights selected role models of growth-oriented female Iranian entrepreneurs who have successfully run a variety of traditionally male-dominated businesses in Iran and internationally, despite the hostile business environment and various gender stereotypes.

Yet, deeply engrained cultural norms often prescribe gender-specific roles and behaviors that severely constrain the opportunities for women’s entrepreneurial activities. This excellent new volume of work from the Diana Group explores this paradox.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In general, most individuals in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have high perceptions about the presence of good opportunities for starting businesses in the next 6 months, with the exception of South Africa (35%) where this measure is well below the average of 70% for the region. It should be noted that the types of businesses in which sub-Saharan entrepreneurs commonly engage differs from more developed economies in that they are generally lower margin, "me too" businesses with low levels of differentiation and often driven by necessity. The perception that individuals have the skills necessary to start and successfully run a business are high in all countries (average 76%), again with South Africa being the exception at 39%. Nonetheless, the figures for SSA are substantially higher than all other regions around the world, including those in developing economies. On average, the sub-Saharan Africa region exhibits the lowest levels of fear of failure with only 24% of all respondents indicating that fear of failure would prevent them from starting a business. The only other region that comes close to this is Latin America and the Caribbean at 28%.These high perceived levels of both opportunities and skills, and low fear of failure is most encouraging because perceptions such as the desirability, feasibility and abilities for entrepreneurship can lead towards higher entrepreneurial intentions.

Book excerpt: This brief presents a detailed look at the entrepreneurial ecosystem of nations around the world by combining individual data with institutional components. Presenting data from the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index (GEDI), which measures the quality and scale of entrepreneurial process from 137 countries world-wide, this book provides a rich understanding of entrepreneurship and a more precise means to measure it. The novelty of the GEDI 2018 edition is the examination of the connection between the GEDI score and the computed total factor productivity (TFP) values. The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index is an annual index (composite indicator) that measures the health of the entrepreneurship ecosystems in a given country. The authors have identified 14 components (or pillars) that are important for the health of entrepreneurial ecosystems, identified data to capture each , and used this data to calculate three levels of scores for a given country: the overall GEDI score, scores for Individuals and Institutions, and pillar level scores (which measure the quality of each of the 14 components).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the increase in female leadership over the last fifty years, and the concrete benefits and challenges this leads to in organizations. It moves beyond the typical focus on developed, Western contexts and answers the call for research on how women in emerging markets rise above the proverbial “glass ceiling”. The authors integrate two underdeveloped topics that are highly relevant to modern business: women in leadership roles, and women in emerging markets. They examine how women leaders in a range of professional services—including accounting, consulting, law, engineering and medicine—have managed to navigate their careers while considering the role emerging markets play in their work. Based on cutting-edge research, the topics are brought to life through examples and profiles of leading women across Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. These narratives, told in the leaders’ own words, are key to understanding women’s achievements and the barriers they face. Students of leadership, diversity, gender studies, and human resource management will learn much from this insightful book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women are now leading companies and other enterprises in significant numbers—in developing countries as well as the Western world. This set examines the specific ways in which entrepreneurial women create success and considers how the growing prevalence of female entrepreneurs will change the world. This two-volume work provides balanced and thorough coverage of women entrepreneurs in multicultural and international contexts as well as in the Western world. Entrepreneurial Women: New Management and Leadership Models explores how women everywhere are empowering themselves socially and economically through entrepreneurship and business ownership. The contributors consider how discrimination against women in the workplace can contribute to the inspiration to become business owners in the first place and document the experiences of African American women entrepreneurs as well as women in distinct settings such as China, Africa, rural Jamaica, and Silicon Valley. The work draws on empirical studies, data sets, case studies, and descriptions of career trajectories to portray the realities of women entrepreneurs today. Readers will understand the distinctive challenges and opportunities involved with the entrepreneurship process for women-owned businesses, grasp how women have overcome their disadvantages in getting funding and accessing capital, and learn about the unique management and leadership style of women entrepreneurs.
