Book excerpt: This book introduces the recent developments in the subject of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with dissipation, such as frictional damping, relaxation, viscosity and heat diffusion. The mathematical theory behind this subject is emphasized in two ways. One emphasis is based on understanding the influence of the dissipation mechanism on the qualitative behavior of solutions, such as the nonlinear diffusive phenomena caused by damping, and other phenomena (including phase transition) for the case with viscosity and heat diffusion. The second emphasis is to take the systems with the dissipation mechanism as an approach to approximating the corresponding system of quasilinear hyperbolic conservation laws - the zero-limit relaxation, or the zero-limit viscosity, and the related topic of nonlinear stability of waves.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile, a new kind of exact boundary controllability stimulated by some practical applications. This kind of controllability is useful in practice as it does not require any precisely given final state to be attained at a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls, instead it requires the state to exactly fit any given demand (profile) on one or more nodes after a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls. In this book we present a general discussion of this kind of controllability for general 1-D first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems and for general 1-D quasilinear wave equations on an interval as well as on a tree-like network using a modular-structure construtive method, suggested in LI Tatsien's monograph "Controllability and Observability for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems"(2010), and we establish a complete theory on the local exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for 1-D quasilinear hyperbolic systems.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on "Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics and Applications'' was held in CalTech on March 25-30, 2002. The conference was the ninth meeting in the bi-annual international series which became one of the highest quality and most successful conference series in Applied mathematics. This volume contains more than 90 contributions presented in this conference, including plenary presentations by A. Bressan, P. Degond, R. LeVeque, T.-P. Liu, B. Perthame, C.-W. Shu, B. Sjögreen and S. Ukai. Reflecting the objective of series, the contributions in this volume keep the traditional blend of theory, numerics and applications. The Hyp2002 meeting placed a particular emphasize on fundamental theory and numerical analysis, on multi-scale analysis, modeling and simulations, and on geophysical applications and free boundary problems arising from materials science and multi-component fluid dynamics. The volume should appeal to researchers, students and practitioners with general interest in time-dependent problems governed by hyperbolic equations.

The emphasis is put on specific phenomena due to nonlinearities. In particular, many examples are given where nonlinearities turn out to be essential to get controllability or stabilization. Various methods are presented to study the controllability or to construct stabilizing feedback laws. The power of these methods is illustrated by numerous examples coming from such areas as celestial mechanics, fluid mechanics, and quantum mechanics. The book is addressed to graduate students in mathematics or control theory, and to mathematicians or engineers with an interest in nonlinear control systems governed by ordinary or partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of the 4th Stability and Control Processes Conference are focused on modern applied mathematics, stability theory, and control processes. The conference was held in recognition of the 90th birthday of Professor Vladimir Ivanovich Zubov (1930–2000). This selection of papers reflects the wide-ranging nature of V. I. Zubov’s work, which included contributions to the development of the qualitative theory of differential equations, the theory of rigid body motion, optimal control theory, and the theory of electromagnetic fields. It helps to advance many aspects of the theory of control systems, including questions of motion stability, nonlinear oscillations in control systems, navigation and reliability of control devices, vibration theory, and quantization of orbits. The disparate applications covered by the book – in mechanical systems, game theory, solid-state physics, socio-economic systems and medical and biological systems, control automata and navigation – are developments from Professor Zubov’s in-depth studies on the theory of stability of motion, the theory of automatic control and the theory of the motions of optimal processes. Stability and Control Processes presents research continuing the legacy of V. I. Zubov and updates it with sections focused on intelligence-based control. These proceedings will be of interest to academics, professionals working in industry and researchers alike.

Book excerpt: Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an authoritative reference to the basic tools and concepts of complexity, systems theory, and dynamical systems from the perspective of pure and applied mathematics. Complex systems are systems that comprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures. These systems are often characterized by extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic. The more than 100 entries in this wide-ranging, single source work provide a comprehensive explication of the theory and applications of mathematical complexity, covering ergodic theory, fractals and multifractals, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, solitons, systems and control theory, and related topics. Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an essential reference for all those interested in mathematical complexity, from undergraduate and graduate students up through professional researchers.

Book excerpt: The thesis presents different control design approaches for stabilizing networks of quasi-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. These equations are usually conservative, which gives them interesting properties to design stabilizing control laws. Two main design approaches are developed: a methodology based on entropies and Lyapunov functions and a methodology based on the Riemann invariants. The stability theorems are illustrated using numerical simulations. Two practical applications of these methodologies are presented. Network of navigation channels are modelled using the Saint-Venant equation (also known as the Shallow Water Equations). The stabilization problem of such system has an industrial importance in order to satisfy the navigation constraints and to optimize the production of electricity in hydroelectric plants, usually located at each hydraulic gate. A second application deals with the regulation of water waves in moving tanks. This problem is also modelled by a modified version of the shallow water equations and appears in a number industrial fields which deal with liquid moving parts.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics and Applications, ``HYP2008'', was held at the University of Maryland from June 9-13, 2008. This was the twelfth meeting in the bi-annual international series of HYP conferences which originated in 1986 at Saint-Etienne, France, and over the last twenty years has become one of the highest quality and most successful conference series in Applied Mathematics. This book, the second in a two-part volume, contains more than sixty articles based on contributed talks given at the conference. The articles are written by leading researchers as well as promising young scientists and cover a diverse range of multi-disciplinary topics addressing theoretical, modeling and computational issues arising under the umbrella of ``hyperbolic PDEs''. This volume will bring readers to the forefront of research in this most active and important area in applied mathematics.
