Book excerpt: To systematically study the plasma turbulence in tokamaks, a parametrization method of frequency spectra from the Tore Supra reflectometry database has been developed. The database includes 350,000 acquisitions obtained from 6,000 discharges with different heating scenarios. In the parametrization, each spectrum has been decomposed into four component: the direct current component, the low-frequency (LF) fluctuations, the broadband (BB) turbulence and the noise level, and each component has been fitted by a function. Specifically for the BB turbulence component, three different functions have been tested and compared. The generalized Gaussian function and the Taylor function have shown excellent fitting performance. In Ohmic plasmas, EBB in the saturated Ohmic confinement regime is observed to be systematically higher than in the linear Ohmic confinement regime. In L-mode plasmas, EBB in the ion cyclotron resonance heating plasmas is globally much higher than in the lower hybrid heating plasmas. The collisional effects on the modifications of the spectra have also been studied. With the previous kinetic simulation results, a change of the dominating micro-instabilities, i.e., between the trapped electron modes and the ion temperature gradients modes, has been proposed to explain the behaviors of EBB, supported by database analysis of the density peaking and the LF component.

Book excerpt: Plasma turbulence is nowadays believed to be responsible for the anomalous transport and consequently the degradation of discharge conditions in magnetic confined fusion devices, such as tokamaks. Since a good energy confinement time is crucial for achieving a positive energy yield, understanding and control of turbulent processes is currently one of the major goals of the Magnetic Confinement Fusion research. To study the plasma turbulence, experimental tools that are able to provide information about its characteristics are necessary. Such tools include microwave diagnostics and, in particular, Doppler reflectometry and radial correlation Doppler reflectometry. While these non-invasive diagnostics benefit from the simplicity of the setup, there are a number of unresolved issues when it comes to the interpretation of the experimental data. Issues such are small-angle scattering and plasma curvature effects limit the range of applicability of the simple interpretation of the measurements, while nonlinear scattering effects make it inapplicable altogether. These problems make it necessary to validate the interpretation of experimental data. Thus, the primary goal of this thesis was to create a synthetic Doppler reflectometry and radial correlation Doppler reflectometry diagnostic for the interpretation of the FT-2 tokamak experimental results. This goal is achieved by applying full-wave IPF-FD3D code to the results of gyrokinetic plasma modelling with ELMFIRE code to obtain the synthetic signals, which are then benchmarked with experimental measurements. The synthetic diagnostic is also used for a more general study of the possibility of nonlinear effects influencing the experimental measurements. Finally, the secondary goal of this thesis was to perform an analytical research of plasma curvature effects, nonlinear scattering and a novel technique for turbulence structures' characterization. The first principles analytical study was performed by considering the Helmholtz equation and obtaining an analytical expression for the experimental signals. The results for the latter two topics were numerically validated with the partial use of specially developed linear numerical model and the full-wave IPF-FD3D code.

Book excerpt: For the interpretation of correlation reflectometry data a fast two-dimensional full wave code has been developed in which realistic plasma geometries are used. Results of this code are compared with experiments and turbulence correlation lengths and fluctuation levels are extracted with statistical optics methods. It is shown that in general the measured reflectometer correlation length is not equal to the turbulence correlation length. The code is also used to study the possibility of O-X correlation reflectometry in FIRE for the determination of the local magnetic field strength. It was found that this is only possible at very low fluctuation levels.

Book excerpt: The promise of a vast and clean source of thermal power drove physics research for over fifty years and has finally come to collimation with the international consortium led by the European Union and Japan, with an agreement from seven countries to build a definitive test of fusion power in ITER. It happened because scientists since the Manhattan project have envisioned controlled nuclear fusion in obtaining energy with no carbon dioxide emissions and no toxic nuclear waste products. This large toroidal magnetic confinement ITER machine is described from confinement process to advanced physics of plasma-wall interactions, where pulses erupt from core plasma blistering the machine walls. Emissions from the walls reduce the core temperature which must remain ten times hotter than the 15 million degree core solar temperature to maintain ITER fusion power. The huge temperature gradient from core to wall that drives intense plasma turbulence is described in detail. Also explained are the methods designed to limit the growth of small magnetic islands, the growth of edge localized plasma plumes and the solid state physics limits of the stainless steel walls of the confinement vessel from the burning plasma. Designs of the wall coatings and the special 'exhaust pipe' for spent hot plasma are provided in two chapters. And the issues associated with high-energy neutrons — about 10 times higher than in fission reactions — and how they are managed in ITER, are detailed.

Book excerpt: This monograph describes plasma physics for magnetic confinement of high temperature plasmas in nonaxisymmetric toroidal magnetic fields or stellarators. The techniques are aimed at controlling nuclear fusion for continuous energy production. While the focus is on the nonaxisymmetric toroidal field, or heliotron, developed at Kyoto University, the physics applies equally to other stellarators and axisymmetric tokamaks. The author covers all aspects of magnetic confinement, formation of magnetic surfaces, magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability, single charged particle confinement, neoclassical transport and plasma heating. He also reviews recent experiments and the prospects for the next generation of devices.

Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at the Course on "Tokamak Startup - Problems and Scenarios Related to the Transient Phases of a Thermonuclear Fusion Reactor" which was held in Erice, July 14-20, 1985. The fact that the critical startup and transient phases of a tokamak reactor are now the specific subject of a comprehensive international gathering of fusion specialists seems indicative of the substantial pro gress made in recent years towards attaining controlled ignition of a nuclear fusion fuel, i.e. towards demonstrating the scientific feasibili ty of controlled thermonuclear fusion. In fact, the steady-state burning phase has attracted so far most of the attention of fusion physicists and engineers, as it is conceptually more rewarding, and theoretically easier to handle. However, as for many large engineering systems, - nuclear fis- ... ':1' " . 10 ' ... Book excerpt: Fusion energy offers the prospect of addressing the nation's energy needs and contributing to the transition to a low-carbon emission electrical generation infrastructure. Technology and research results from U.S. investments in the major fusion burning plasma experiment known as ITER, coupled with a strong foundation of research funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), position the United States to begin planning for its first fusion pilot plant. Strong interest from the private sector is an additional motivating factor, as the process of decarbonizing and modernizing the nation's electric infrastructure accelerates and companies seek to lead the way. At the request of DOE, Bringing Fusion to the U.S. Grid builds upon the work of the 2019 report Final Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U.S. Burning Plasma Research to identify the key goals and innovations - independent of confinement concept - that are needed to support the development of a U.S. fusion pilot plant that can serve as a model for producing electricity at the lowest possible capital cost.

Book excerpt: The principal goals of the study were to articulate the scientific rationale and objectives of the field and then to take a long-term strategic view of U.S. nuclear science in the global context for setting future directions for the field. Nuclear Physics: Exploring the Heart of Matter provides a long-term assessment of an outlook for nuclear physics. The first phase of the report articulates the scientific rationale and objectives of the field, while the second phase provides a global context for the field and its long-term priorities and proposes a framework for progress through 2020 and beyond. In the second phase of the study, also developing a framework for progress through 2020 and beyond, the committee carefully considered the balance between universities and government facilities in terms of research and workforce development and the role of international collaborations in leveraging future investments. Nuclear physics today is a diverse field, encompassing research that spans dimensions from a tiny fraction of the volume of the individual particles (neutrons and protons) in the atomic nucleus to the enormous scales of astrophysical objects in the cosmos. Nuclear Physics: Exploring the Heart of Matter explains the research objectives, which include the desire not only to better understand the nature of matter interacting at the nuclear level, but also to describe the state of the universe that existed at the big bang. This report explains how the universe can now be studied in the most advanced colliding-beam accelerators, where strong forces are the dominant interactions, as well as the nature of neutrinos.
