Book excerpt: Imagine what you do everyday: The simple tasks such as turning on your TV, a trip to the grocery store, having dinner with a group of friends or turning on and off the temperature. These everyday occurrences that we take so much for granted are what make the world go around. There can also be humor and lightness found in these simple, everyday happenings. Glimpses of Happiness is a compendium of Seinfeld-like vignettes composed of topics that everyone can relate to. Written by my dad, Jerome Perlmutter, who used writing as his therapy while recovering from a brain tumor. And write he did! Several years before he died, he wrote more than 500 Glimpses covering all topics imaginable: arts, music, entertainment, writing, speaking, communication, babies, kids, children, doctors, personal, situations, commentary, travel, transportation, places, food, dining out, socializing, men, women, and America. Glimpses of Happiness is a labor of love. It has been my passion for more than ten years to bring this project to fruition. Now my dream has come true. As you read through this book it is my hope that you will appreciate Glimpses of Happiness, have a good laugh and say, "Yes, this happened to me, too."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often focus on how our gifts can help those in need. But the act of giving actually improves our own lives as well. In The Giving Way to Happiness, Jenny Santi overturns conventional thinking about what it takes to be happy by revealing how giving to others - whether in the form of money, expertise, time, or love - has helped people from all walks of life find purpose and joy. Drawing on the wisdom of great thinkers past and present, as well as cutting-edge scientific research, Santi makes an eloquent and passionate case that oftentimes the answers to the problems that haunt us, and the key to the happiness that eludes us, lie in helping those around us. This book is filled with inspiring stories told firsthand by Academy Award winner Goldie Hawn, Noble Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, supermodel Christy Turlington Burns, Teach for America founder Wendy Kopp, philanthropist Richard Rockefeller, environmentalist Philippe Cousteau, activist Ric O'Barry, bestselling author Isabel Allende, ALS survivor Augie Nieto, and many others from all over the world. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they have all found unexpected happiness and fulfillment through giving. This book tells us not just how they changed the world but also how their acts changed their very own lives. In addition, Santi reveals- How altruism involves far more than suppressing basic selfish urges. Rather, we are wired to give, as it activates the same pleasure centers of the brain stimulated by food, sex, and drugs How helping others - whether by walking a friend through a struggle that you've also experienced or by supporting a cause to honor a loved one's memory - can be a healthy way to deal with adversity and process grief The unexpected reasons why those who 'gave it all up' to make a difference, and who face the direst situations, are nevertheless some of the happiest, most fulfilled, and least angst-ridden people you'll ever meet. Practical, universally applicable lessons on what kind of giving makes people happy and what doesn't. How do you discover giving that is unique to you and makes you feel good? In this inspiring book, Santi turns conventional wisdom upside down about what it takes to be happy and reveals the surprising reasons that have led so many people to live lives full of meaning, purpose and happiness. 'The Giving Way to Happiness is full of interesting insights from big-ticket philanthropists and prominent personalities, but it is also about something bigger- how we can all find happiness through helping others. If done right, giving may well be the greatest gift you can give yourself.' Adam Grant, professor, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and New York Times-bestselling author of Give and Take'This thoughtful look at philanthropy honestly examines the self-interest often involved in it and suggests that a self-focused approach to giving may in fact be entirely appropriate.' Publishers Weekly'Well done! A wonderful and timely contribution.' Christy Turlington Burns, founder of Every Mother Counts'The Giving Way to Happinesswill change the way you approach giving, shifting the focus from charity to empathy, from a one-way transfer to a mutually beneficial act, from guilt and obligation to pleasure and happiness. Jenny Santi, through her well-researched, eloquent, and insightful book, teaches us how we can help ourselves by helping others.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Happiness in World History traces ideas and experiences of happiness from early stages in human history, to the maturation of agricultural societies and their religious and philosophical systems, to the changes and diversities in the approach to happiness in the modern societies that began to emerge in the 18th century. In this thorough overview, Peter N. Stearns explores the interaction between psychological and historical findings about happiness, the relationship between ideas and popular experience, and the opportunity to use historical analysis to assess strengths and weaknesses of dominant contemporary notions of happiness. Starting with the advent of agriculture, the book assesses major transitions in history for patterns in happiness, including the impact of the great religions, the unprecedented Enlightenment interest in secular happiness and cheerfulness, and industrialization and imperialism. The final, contemporary section covers fascist and communist efforts to define alternatives to Western ideas of happiness, the increasing connections with consumerism, and growing global interests in defining and promoting well-being. Touching on the experiences in the major regions of Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and North America, the text offers an expansive introduction to a new field of study. This book will be of interest to students of world history and the history of emotions.

Book excerpt: In Operation Happiness, happiness strategist and life coach Kristi Ling teaches you how to create immediate, positive shifts in your life by proving that happiness is a skill that can be cultivated, learned, and mastered--much like playing an instrument. After experiencing multiple devastating events, Ling spent years studying the science of happiness and focused on identifying and testing specific emotional support tools. During this process, she discovered something that goes against everything we've been lead to believe about happiness: it isn't just something you feel; it's something you do. Based on this discovery, Ling narrowed down the road to happiness to three powerful steps: Change Your View, Change Your Mornings, and create new habits, the foundational principles for Operation Happiness. Part memoir and part how-to, Operation Happiness combines compelling personal stories, inspiring perspective shifts, and big ah-ha moments with specific how-to's and clear actionable steps to help you create a solid foundation for sustainable happiness that will propel you into a new, light-filled way of living.

Happiness may mean a vision of God or a state of perfect silence in the mind. It may also mean to transcend to the realm of total serenity, compassion and contentment. If it is so, it is surely divine.

If we could get things right – the perfect job, relationship, family, body and mind – then we’d be happy. With enough economic growth and technological innovation, we could cure all societal ills. The Happiness Problem shows that this way of thinking is too simplistic and can even be harmful: no matter how much progress we make, we will still be vulnerable to disappointment, loss and suffering. The things we do to make us happy are merely the tip of the iceberg. Sam Wren-Lewis offers an alternative process that acknowledges insecurity and embraces uncertainty. Drawing on our psychological capacities for curiosity and compassion, he proposes that we can connect with, and gain a deeper understanding of, the personal and social challenges that define our time

Gretchen had a good marriage, two healthy daughters, and work she loved--but one day, stuck on a city bus, she realized that time was flashing by, and she wasn’t thinking enough about the things that really mattered. “I should have a happiness project,” she decided. She spent the next year test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific studies, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier. Each month, she pursued a different set of resolutions: go to sleep earlier, quit nagging, forget about results, or take time to be silly. Bit by bit, she began to appreciate and amplify the happiness that already existed in her life. Written with humour and insight, Gretchen’s story will inspire you to start your own happiness project. Now in a beautiful, expanded edition, Gretchen offers a wealth of new material including happiness paradoxes and practical tips on many daily matters: being a more light-hearted parent, sticking to a fitness routine, getting your sweetheart to do chores without nagging, coping when you forget someone’s name and more.

This book was released on 2015-09-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Grosse (1596–1654) was an able Puritan minister of presbyterian persuasion who wrote eight influential books from 1632 to 1656, none of which have been reprinted until now. This book, with its intriguing title about making a speedy use of Christ in every situation, is based on Colossians 2:9–10, “For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.” Grosse first sets forth Christ’s fullness as above all created fullness and shows us the emptiness of everything compared to Christ. He contrasts the folly of not cleaving to and contenting ourselves with Christ to the wisdom of valuing Christ above all else. He then expounds how sinners come to Christ and obtain a saving interest in Him. Next, Grosse stresses how to make use of Christ and how to constantly submit to Him. He stresses the joy of those who are partakers of Christ and shows how believers mature spiritually by communion with Him. Their fullness flows out of apprehending the fullness of Christ. Finally, he expounds four marks that evidence the fullness of believers and provides four motives to labor for more mature fullness in personal spiritual life in and through Christ. Two appendices are added to this excellent, experiential Christ-exalting book—the first on the danger of neglecting Christ and the opportunity of grace and the second on the Lord Jesus as the soul’s sure and last refuge.
