A seguire gli eventi e a coinvolgersi in essi non furono solo uomini di cultura e politici radicali ma anche gli apparati del governo federale e gli stessi funzionari di stanza in Europa. Il sacrificio di tanta gente comune insieme alle gesta di Garibaldi e alle sottigliezze di Cavour, attirarono un interesse che, come scrisse un diplomatico al culmine dell'esperienza della Repubblica romana del 1849, non consentiva di “rimanere spettatori indifferenti di fronte a una simile lotta”.

Book excerpt: America in Italy examines the influence of the American political experience on the imagination of Italian political thinkers between the late eighteenth century and the unification of Italy in the 1860s. Axel Körner shows how Italian political thought was shaped by debates about the American Revolution and the U.S. Constitution, but he focuses on the important distinction that while European interest in developments across the Atlantic was keen, this attention was not blind admiration. Rather, America became a sounding board for the critical assessment of societal changes at home. Many Italians did not think the United States had lessons to teach them and often concluded that life across the Atlantic was not just different but in many respects also objectionable. In America, utopia and dystopia seemed to live side by side, and Italian references to the United States were frequently in support of progressive or reactionary causes. Political thinkers including Cesare Balbo, Carlo Cattaneo, Giuseppe Mazzini, and Antonio Rosmini used the United States to shed light on the course of their nation's political resurgence. Concepts from Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Vico served to evaluate what Italians discovered about America. Ideas about American "domestic manners" were reflected and conveyed through works of ballet, literature, opera, and satire. Transcending boundaries between intellectual and cultural history, America in Italy is the first book-length examination of the influence of America's political formation on modern Italian political thought.

Book excerpt: When antebellum Americans talked about the contemporary struggle for Italian unification (the Risorgimento), they were often saying more about themselves than about Italy. In Domesticating Foreign Struggles Paola Gemme unpacks the American cultural record on the Risorgimento not only to make sense of the U.S. engagement with the broader world but also to understand the nation’s domestic preoccupations. Swayed by the myth of the United States as a catalyst of and model for global liberal movements, says Gemme, Americans saw parallels to their own history in the Risorgimento--and they said as much in newspapers, magazines, travel accounts, diplomatic dispatches, poems, maps, and paintings. And yet, in American eyes, Italians were too civically deficient to ever achieve republican goals. Such a view, says Gemme, reaffirmed cherished beliefs both in the United States as the center of world events and in the notion of American exceptionalism. Gemme argues that Americans also pondered the place of “subordinate” ethnic groups in domestic culture--especially Irish Catholic immigrants and enslaved African Americans--through the discourse on Risorgimento Italy. Thus, says Gemme, national identity rested not only on differentiation from outside groups but also on a desire for internal racial and cultural homogeneity. Writing in a tradition pioneered by Amy Kaplan, Richard Slotkin, and others, Gemme advances the movement to “internationalize” American studies by situating the United States in its global cultural context.

In particolare, una parte della riflessione di cui questi sono i risultati, ha preso alcuni spunti da un seminario organizzato nel 2007 al Centro Studi Americani con Ferdinando Cordova su L'Italia vista dagli Stati Uniti (1880- 1914). Quell'incontro ha costituito una base importante per contestualizzare il lavoro di ciascuno dei partecipanti a quel seminario e di alcuni degli autori presenti in questo libro. Come nel caso dei precedenti volumi la metodologia usata differisce a seconda delle specializzazioni degli studiosi, in questo caso tutti storici. Partendo dagli episodi successivi alla conquista di Roma (il terzo volume porta il titolo: Le relazioni tra Stati Uniti e Italia nel periodo di Roma capitale), gli autori esaminano i rapporti tra i due paesi e la trasformazione dell'immagine dell'Italia negli USA anche in conseguenza di quello che, proprio sul finire del secolo, diventa un aspetto centrale nei rapporti tra i due paesi: la grande emigrazione italiana verso le Americhe.
