Download or read book A New Hope written by Stephen Lakkis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology and historiography often see the future as a realm open to new experiences and unexpected events. Yet for classical physics, the future was the result of the universe’s predictable development. Given enough information about current states, we could use the laws of nature to uncover the universe’s future. Modern space-time theory, with its picture of an invariant four-dimensional universe, only makes this problem more acute. Room for radically novel events, for miracles and new hope seems to have disappeared. It is this hope for something new that the German theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg seeks to preserve in his controversial work on time. To defend God’s supernatural freedoms and to escape natural determinism, Pannenberg invokes a medieval understanding of the unsurpassable and absolute power of God, using God’s potentia absoluta to reverse time’s flow and express absolute authority over creation’s progress. Time and all its contents are utterly subjected under the free will of a divine “all-determining reality”. But is this tenable for modern understandings of God and the universe? Or does it lead to theological difficulties and promote an arms race between the laws of nature and the rule of God? In this volume, Stephen Lakkis offers an analysis and critique of Pannenberg’s approach and suggests a different way forward.

Book Synopsis Pannenberg on Evil, Love and God by : Mark Hocknull
Download or read book Pannenberg on Evil, Love and God written by Mark Hocknull and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pannenberg on Evil, Love and God examines a much-neglected aspect of the theological thought of one of the most original contemporary German theologians, Wolfhart Pannenberg: his theological and philosophical understanding of evil and its relationship to the love of God. The book seeks to correct a widely held misconception that in his theology, Pannenberg has neglected the darker side of the world, concentrating instead on an optimistic picture of the future. This book argues that questions of evil hold a central place throughout Pannenberg’s writing and seeks to draw out the implications of his wrestling with these issues. The Introduction sets the scene by considering the nature of the question of evil and argues that a theological response must be made as part of a global view of the world and not in isolation from other themes. The succeeding chapters develop this theme through a reading of Pannenberg’s theology.
Book Synopsis Science and Ethics by : Evandro Agazzi
Download or read book Science and Ethics written by Evandro Agazzi and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy of science used to be identified with the logical and methodological analysis of scientific theories, and any allusion to values was considered as a deplorable intromission in a philosophical investigation that should remain strictly epistemological. As a reaction against this view, an opposite «sociological» approach downplayed the usual virtues of scientific knowledge (such as logical rigor and empirical adequacy) as artificial imageries that cover the actual nature of science, that is a social product submitted to all the kinds of social conditionings and compromises. A more balanced view is badly needed today, when technoscience is permeating all aspects of our civilization and wise persons understand that we cannot survive without using science and technology but at the same time we need to steer their development in view of the real benefit of humankind. We must investigate how science, technology and values are legitimately interconnected and, in particular, how the discourses of ethics, politics and religion can enter a fruitful dialogue with science. The essays presented in this volume offer a valuable contribution to this interdisciplinary study.
Download or read book Luther's Reform written by Jared Wicks and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of the Roman Catholic scholars of the Reformation who have contributed to our understanding of Martin Luther and his theology, Jared Wicks is among the very best. In this reprinted collection of essays a new generation of readers will glean fresh insights into the Wittenberg reformer, as Wicks places Luther within his proper late-medieval theological context and carefully teases out his unique contributions to understanding the church and justification (conversion). At the same time, Wicks situates Luther's theology within present conversations between Lutherans and Roman Catholics and proves again and again the important role that good, fair-minded historiography plays in aiding such dialogue. This collection will treat readers to, among other things, in-depth investigations of Luther's early theology of justification, of the connection between the sacraments and faith, and of the pastoral consequences for the simul iustus et peccator--all written in a winsome prose with careful attention to the original sources. It is a helpful addition to the library of anyone interested in understanding the now 500-year-old movement of reform within the church catholic and its implications for today." Book Synopsis Trinity and History by : Scott P. Rice
Download or read book Trinity and History written by Scott P. Rice and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does God relate to the world? What difference does our understanding of God make for conceiving of God's relation to us? Christian theology has seen a flourishing of activity in response to these questions under a common doctrinal theme: Trinity. That said, proposals for understanding how God relates to the world through the Trinity of God's being--otherwise known as the relationship between the immanent and the economic Trinity--vary significantly. This book, reflecting on the work of four modern theologians--Dorner, Barth, Pannenberg, and Jenson--offers a set of constructive proposals on key issues relating to the God-world relation, including a way to understand divine immutability without denying God's living history with others and a trinitarian notion of divine sovereignty that demonstrates how God transcends history from within the structures of time. At each step along the way the author conveys how Trinity opens up a richer, more expansive conception of God's relation to us. This book shows how Trinity serves the practical work of theology as faith seeking understanding.
