Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Astronomy contributed to the educational enlightenment of Glasgow, to its society and to its commerce. The words 'Astronomy' and 'Glasgow' seem an incongruous juxtaposition, and yet the two are closely linked over 500 years of history. This is a tale of enlightenment and scientific progress at both institutional and public levels. Combined with the ambitions of civic commerce, it is a story populated with noteworthy personalities and intense rivalries. It is remarkable to realise that the first Astronomy teaching in the Glasgow 'Colledge' presented an Earth-centred Universe, prior to the Copernican revolution of the mid sixteenth Century. Glasgow was later known astronomically for the telescope observations of sunspots made by Wilson in the 1760s, but less well known are the ideas related to mono-chromaticity within light, to dew point and hoar frost, and Herschel's discovery of infra-red energy in solar radiation by application of Glasgow-made thermometers. This engrossing and entertaining scientific history includes the story of Glasgow's 'Big Bang' of 1863, the controversy over 'Astronomer Royal for Scotland' and a historical survey of the eight observatories that once populated Glasgow. David Clarke brings us a complex weave of science and accompanying social history in this unique and fascinating work.

Book excerpt: From bishops to battlefields, barrowboys to business tycoons, Nuala Naughton brings to life some of the characters and events that have shaped Glasgow’s East End since the city’s founder, St Mungo, first set eyes on the ‘dear green place’ This entertaining, lighthearted account looks at the legends behind the city’s coat of arms and the foundation of the city as an ecclesiastic centre of excellence and respected seat of learning. It also offers a colourful insight into tenement life with anecdotes and interviews by born and bred Eastenders; the Battle of George Square in 1919 when Prime Minister Churchill waged war on unionized workers, the make-do-and-mend community and the story behind ‘silk stockings’ made from used teabags and an eyebrow pencil during the Second World War; the dancin’, the saints, the sinners; the ‘City of the Dead’ and how the Barrowland ballroom came to the attention of the German high command and the war propagandist Lord Haw Haw. From medieval Glasgow to modern times, this fascinating book offers a pick ‘n’ mix of fact and fiction, myths and miracles surrounding the rich and sometimes turbulent history of Glasgow’s East End.

This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only excuse I have to offer for the publication of these desultory and chatty letters in this more permanent form is that a number of my friends have requested it. Many of the letters have already appeared in the columns of The Children's Friend, for which they were originally written, at the instance of the Presbyterian Committee of Publication; but I have included in the volume several letters which were written for other periodicals, and a considerable number which have not been published anywhere till now. Some of them were written hastily, and, as it were, on the wing, others with more deliberation and care. Some were intended for young readers, others for older people. This will account for the differences of style and subject matter which will strike every one, and which will be particularly noticeable when the letters are read consecutively. In some cases I have drawn the materials, in part, from other sources besides my own observations, the main object at times being not originality, but accuracy and fullness of information. In such cases I have endeavored to make full acknowledgment of my indebtedness to other writers. As most of the letters were written for a denominational paper, they naturally contain a good many references to notable events in the history of the Presbyterian Church, and to some of the differences between that church and others in matters of doctrine, polity and forms of worship. But I trust that in no case have I felt or expressed a spirit of uncharitable sectarianism. If any reader should receive the impression that I have done so in one or two instances, I request him to suspend judgment till he has read all the references to such matters contained in the letters. It will then be seen that if I have had occasion to make some strictures upon the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches, I have not hesitated to make them upon my own church also, when I have observed, in her worship or work, things which seemed to argue that she was untrue in any measure to her principles; and that if I have criticised the Anglo-Catholic and Roman Catholic systems as erroneous, I have recognized thankfully the great evangelical truths embedded in the heart of Anglican, and even Romish theology, though so sadly overlaid, and have rejoiced to pay my tribute of praise to the saintly characters that have been developed within those bodies in spite of their errors.
