Book excerpt: Buddha the Bachatero: The Eastern Wisdom of Latin Rhythm is a spiritual self-help book that infuses the timeless treasures and teachings of Eastern philosophy along with the culture and creativity of Bachata, the musical genre and dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. This book renews and reinvents the quality and consciousness of the modern man through a vision branded “Buddha the Bachatero.” Buddha the Bachatero is the embodiment of the Easter engine illuminated by Latin limbs, lyrics and love. By combining the silence and stillness of a Buddha and the sensuality and sazon of a Bachatero – synthesizing awareness and artistry, presence and poetry, eternal energy and emotions – we can profoundly penetrate the most pressing social, economical and artistic challenges that we face today in our relationships, businesses and daily lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inside account of a financial meltdown that reshaped Wall Street In 1983, Lew Glucksman, then co-CEO of the heralded investment bank Lehman Brothers, demanded the resignation of chairman Pete Peterson, with whom he had long argued over how to manage the company. Shockingly, Peterson, who had taken charge a decade earlier and led Lehman from near collapse to record profits, agreed to step down. In this meticulously researched volume, Ken Auletta details the turmoil, infighting, and power struggles that brought about Peterson’s departure and the eventual sale of one of Wall Street’s oldest and most prestigious firms. Set against the backdrop of the 1980s stock exchange, where hotshot young traders made and lost millions in a single afternoon, the story of Lehman’s fall is a suspenseful battle of wills between bankers, traders, and executives motivated by greed, envy, and ego. Auletta, who conducted hundreds of hours of interviews and was granted access to private company records, has crafted a thorough, enduring, and engaging account of pivotal events that continued to influence this storied financial institution until its ultimate demise in 2008.

Book excerpt: SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE from director Ridley Scott, starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. The sensational true story of murder, madness, glamour, and greed that shook the Gucci dynasty, now fully updated with a new afterword. On March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci, heir to the fabulous fashion dynasty, was slain by an unknown gunman as he approached his Milan office. In 1998, his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani Martinelli--nicknamed "The Black Widow" by the press--was sentenced to 29 years in prison, for arranging his murder. Did Patrizia murder her ex-husband because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because her glamorous ex was preparing to marry his mistress, Paola Franchi? Or is there a possibility she didn't do it at all? The Gucci story is one of glitz, glamour, intrigue, the rise, near fall and subsequent resurgence of a fashion dynasty. Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and widely acclaimed, The House of Gucci will captivate readers with its page-turning account of high fashion, high finance, and heart-rending personal tragedy. PRAISE FOR THE HOUSE OF GUCCI: "This gripping book about the empire and murder of Maurizio Gucci ... reveals the ugly truth behind fashion's most fabulous family." -Glamour "A business book you will zip through like a novel. ... Forden has whipped up a mixture of family drama and high finance into a tasty and complex narrative." -The Economist, 'A Best Book of the Year' "Racy, fast-paced. ... Reads like a movie script. ... Hard to put down. ... Forden gets that famous Gucci bar-and-bit between her teeth -and gallops along." -International Herald Tribune "A penetrating chronicle of the rise and fall of a family business. ... Even by the Borgia-like standards of the fashion industry, the operatic Guccis were special. Not content with the usual familial stew of love, jealousy and greed, they added tax evasion, bigamy and, yes, murder to the mix." -Wall Street Journal "Riveting reading." -Cosmopolitan "A riveting account of the talent and creative chaos that built one of the world's great luxury-goods empires--and the egotism, bitter family conflict, and incompetence that nearly destroyed it." -Bloomberg "Fashion has never been so dramatic-and dangerous. The saga of three generations of the Gucci family opens with an execution-style murder in Milan and penetrates the world of one of the hottest fashion labels of our time. Fashion insider Sara Forden spins the tale of how a bunch of greedy, bickering Guccis lost control of the empire that made GG synonymous with loafers." -Teri Agins, author of The End of Fashion "Glamour, greed, sex, style, and very, very good leather goods -- what more can you ask for (besides a 30 percent discount)?" -Michael Gross, bestselling author of Model and 740 Park

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1946, World War I veteran and self-described “buck private in the rear rank” Gerald Andrew Howell finished a memoir of the experiences of his squad from the 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, and their “moments of horror, tragedy, humor, amour, [and] promiscuity” in Europe. This was “the old Army as it used to be,” Howell explains—the saga of the “down-trodden doughboy.” A few months later Howell was dead, his manuscript unpublished. Jeffrey Patrick discovered the memoir and the author’s correspondence with publishers and took on the task of bringing it to publication at last. Yesterday There Was Glory is an unpretentious account of men at war, from training camp to the occupation of Germany. It includes graphic descriptions of the battlefield, of shell fire, gas attacks, and lice. “Between the attacks the men would lay in their wet holes and pray for relief. But no relief came,” Howell remembers. He recalls much more than the horrors of combat, however, chronicling the diverse collection of heroes, professional warriors, shirkers, and braggarts that made up the American Expeditionary Forces. Howell and his comrades longed for wounds that would allow them to escape the war, but resolutely engaged the Germans in hand-to-hand combat. They poked fun at their comrades, but were willing to share their last can of food. They endured difficult marches, pursued “mademoiselles” and “frauleins,” and even staged a “strike” to protest mistreatment by their officers. They were as “ribald as any soldiery in any army,” Howell admits, but “underneath this veneer, they were really patriotic, steadfast and sincere.” Patrick provides an editor’s introduction and annotations to explain terms and sources in the memoir. Howell’s account preserves the flavor of army life with conversations and banter in soldier language, including the uncensored doughboy profanity often heard but seldom recorded.

This book was released on 2022-06-26 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our consumption-oriented society, everyone’s energy is seen to be directed at attainment and profit. The implication of this matter is enhanced by the explicit obsession and preoccupation with money matters among church groups. It is made even more serious because of the recent rise in the popularity of the “doctrine of prosperity” among certain evangelical groups. The modern-day preacher promotes wealth as a signal of spirituality and favor from God. Instead, they should be considerate about saving souls rather than accumulating wealth and hoarding what they have left over (Luke 22:35 KJV). Another matter is the audacious attitudes of some church leaders who think they have the authority regrading the interpretation of scriptures that addresses biblical prosperity. It is because of obvious errors in present-day teaching on giving and prosperity that there is so much uncertainty among those who want to support the work of God in a way that pleases Him. Many questions are left unanswered, resulting in confusion, unhealthy desires to become rich, and many misconceptions in the way the world views Christians in general. Because of the many abnormalities and uncertainties, this book examines the premise upon which the prosperity doctrine is built, and the methods used to raise finances. Moreover, doctrines that are inconsistent with Scripture are identified and repudiated.
