Book Synopsis The Lustrous Trade by : Cinzia Sicca
Download or read book The Lustrous Trade written by Cinzia Sicca and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Anglo-Italian sphere of artistic exchange in relation to painting has been an increasingly productive area of research. Here, contributors shift the focus onto the two countries' equally significant sculpture trade. This volume of selected essays by economic and social historians and historians of material culture and art investigates the varied roles and functions of sculpture and the ways in which this particular cultural exchange was manifested. Issues of business and the markets for sculpture are highlighted, both in the context of producers of "high"art and in the wider market of religious, garden and decorative sculpture.
Download or read book Lazio written by Bice Migliau and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guidebook for the region of Lazio, central Italy. The introduction (p. 9-33) presents the history of Jews in Lazio, relating also to Church restrictions and settlement limitations which led to the disappearance of 50 Jewish communities and 115 synagogues. Begins the historical account with the fall of Judea and the establishment of the largest Jewish community in the diaspora in Rome. After Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire, persecution of Jews increased. In the medieval period Jews were charged with blood libels and with causing the plague. After 1492 many Iberian Jews settled in Rome, but they were accused of heresy there as well. Economic and other restrictions were severe, as were humiliations. In 1870 the Rome ghetto was abolished. In 1938 the racist laws introduced by the fascists made the Jews second-class citizens. On 16 October 1943, 2,000 Jews were rounded up in Rome and deported to their deaths. The guidebook illustrates many of the above topics via art, architecture, and historical documents found in various locations in Lazio.
Book Synopsis The Other Italy by : Hermann W. Haller
Download or read book The Other Italy written by Hermann W. Haller and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy possesses two literary canons, one in the Tuscan language and the other made up of the various dialects of its many regions. The Other Italy presents for the first time an overview of the principal authors and texts of Italy's literary canon in dialect. It highlights the cultivated dialect poetry, drama, and narrative prose since the codification of the Tuscan literary language in the early sixteenth century, when writing in dialect became a deliberate and conscious alternative to the official literary standard. The book offers a panorama of the literary dialects of Italy over five centuries and across the country's regions, shedding light on a profoundly plurilingual and polycentric civilization. As a guide to reading and research, it provides a compendium of literary sources in dialect, arranged by region and accompanied by syntheses of regional traditions with selected textual illustrations. A work of extraordinary importance, The Other Italy was awarded the Modern Language Association of America's Aldo and Jean Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies. It will serve scholars as an indispensable resource book for years to come.
