Book excerpt: Describing applications and uses for parcel information in an ArcGIS geodatabase, this book covers the data model developed as a framework for land record information in an ArcGIS environment. Demonstrated is how the model supports real GIS work, including the update and maintenance of data content by tax assessors, planners, recorders, environmental managers, public works officials, safety officials, and others. Land records personnel learn how parcel information can be designed in a geodatabase so work can begin on system design and implementation. The advantages of putting parcel information into a geodatabase are described, and instruction on moving existing applications into the geodatabase is provided. Datasets are included that show how the parcel data model has been easily customized to satisfy different requirements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land parcel data (also known as cadastral data) provide geographically referenced information about the rights, interests, and ownership of land and are an important part of the financial, legal, and real estate systems of society. The data are used by governments to make decisions about land development, business activities, regulatory compliance, emergency response, and law enforcement. In 1980, a National Research Council book called for nationally integrated land parcel data, but despite major progress in the development of land parcel databases in many local jurisdictions, little progress has been made toward a national system. National Land Parcel Data looks at the current status of land parcel data in the United States. The book concludes that nationally integrated land parcel data is necessary, feasible, and affordable. It provides recommendations for establishing a practical framework for sustained intergovernmental coordination and funding required to overcome the remaining challenges and move forward.

GIS can be employed at different levels to support operational policing, tactical crime mapping, detection, and wider-ranging strategic analyses. With the use of GIS for crime mapping increasing, this book provides a definitive reference. GIS and Crime Mapping provides essential information and reference material to support readers in developing and implementing crime mapping. Relevant case studies help demonstrate the key principles, concepts and applications of crime mapping. This book combines the topics of theoretical principles, GIS, analytical techniques, data processing solutions, information sharing, problem-solving approaches, map design, and organisational structures for using crime mapping for policing and crime reduction. Delivered in an accessible style, topics are covered in a manner that underpins crime mapping use in the three broad areas of operations, tactics and strategy. Provides a complete start-to-finish coverage of crime mapping, including theory, scientific methodologies, analysis techniques and design principles. Includes a comprehensive presentation of crime mapping applications for operational, tactical and strategic purposes. Includes global case studies and examples to demonstrate good practice. Co-authored by Spencer Chainey, a leading researcher and consultant on GIS and crime mapping, and Jerry Ratcliffe, a renowned professor and former police officer. This book is essential reading for crime analysts and other professionals working in intelligence roles in law enforcement or crime reduction, at the local, regional and national government levels. It is also an excellent reference for undergraduate and Masters students taking courses in GIS, Geomatics, Crime Mapping, Crime Science, Criminal Justice and Criminology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1870, land records were chaotic in the Kingdom of Hawaii as a result of often poor surveying during the mahele process. Under William DeWitt Alexander, an agency was established to survey and map the country. The Hawaiian Government Survey was an ambitious undertaking; the United States lacked a similar agency to map the entire country. Alexander shaped the HGS into a survey that achieved a high standard of proficiency, choosing not to emulate Western mapping agencies, but developing a uniquely Hawaiian approach to mapping the land. The HGS preserved the vestiges of the Hawaiian system of land tenure. Surveyors documented ancient boundaries, names of land units and features within them by employing and consulting with Hawaiians; preservation of references to that land system has been an important component in the preservation of Hawaiian culture.
