Book Synopsis Giraffes in Hiding by : Carol Novack
Download or read book Giraffes in Hiding written by Carol Novack and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. "Carol Novack's GIRAFFES IN HIDING mirrors our weltanschauung by using its own language against it or by using its own language to pry open the circus hidden within it. If we say the world is insane or we say the world is a manic whirl, Novack embraces manic insanity with a great hug of laughter. She flings images, characters, ideas, and language around until they all, finally losing--no, abandoning--their moorings, collide, crash, ka-bang one into another creating nuclear reactions of the non-sense that is even Emily Dickinson's 'divine sense, ' although Novack would certainly hurl those two words (and that idea) against each other until they radiated. To read this book is to bring the giraffes out of hiding!"--Martin Nakell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling creators of the hilarious Penguin Problems, Jory John and Lane Smith, turn a giraffe's problematic long neck into an enviable advantage in this fun board book. Edward the giraffe can't understand why his neck is as long and bendy and, well, ridiculous as it is. No other animal has a neck this absurd. He's tried disguising it, dressing it up, strategically hiding behind bushes--honestly, anything you can think of. Just when he has exhausted his neck-hiding options and is about to give up, Cyrus the turtle ambles in (very slowly) and helps Edward understand that his neck has a purpose and, besides, looks excellent in a bow tie. Along with a heavy dose of humor comes a gentle reminder about the importance of acceptance.

Book Synopsis Giraffes in My Hair by : Bruce Paley
Download or read book Giraffes in My Hair written by Bruce Paley and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Paley turned 18 in 1967 during the Summer of Love, putting him on the front lines of the late-1960s youth movement. Paley’s tumultuous journey took him from being a Jack Kerouac-loving hippie in the 1960s, on the road with his 17-year-old girlfriend, dropping acid at Disneyland, living in a car, and crashing with armed Black Panthers at the infamous 1968 Democratic National Convention, to hanging out at Max’s Kansas City, shooting heroin and cocaine with the likes of rock star Johnny Thunders, and frequenting Times Square’s seedy brothels―a journey that mirrored the changing times as the optimism of the ’60s gave way to the nihilism of the punk years. Over a dozen years, Bruce crossed paths with hippies, violent cops, rednecks, rock stars, and Black Panthers... and ended up a heroin addict for much of the 1970s. These stories are vividly brought to life in Giraffes in My Hair (A Rock ’N’ Roll Life) by the compelling visual storytelling of Bruce’s partner, the cartoonist Carol Swain. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 13.9px Arial; color: #424242}
Book Synopsis 50 Most Secret Never to Know with Giraffe by : Auria Bawdekar
Download or read book 50 Most Secret Never to Know with Giraffe written by Auria Bawdekar and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most popular exhibits at any zoo is the Giraffe that is because these large animals are a majestic vision to behold. Giraffes are the tallest land animals on earth; even their legs alone are taller than many humans-about 6 feet. They have their distinctive necks which alone can reach almost 2 meters in height. A male giraffe can weigh as much as a pickup truck! That's about 1400 kilograms. The hair that makes up a giraffe tail is about 10 times thicker than the average strand of human hair. Giraffes have some distinctive characteristics than other animals. Giraffes spend most of their lives standing up; they even sleep and give birth standing up. Whilst it was thought that giraffes did not make any sounds, this is now known to be untrue, as giraffes bellow, snort, and hiss and make flute-like sounds, as well as low pitch noises beyond the range of human hearing. When giraffes walk, they move both legs on one side of their body and then both legs on the other side; this is unique to giraffes. However, they run in a similar style to other mammals, swinging their rear legs and front legs in unison. They can run as fast as 35 miles an hour over short distances, or cruise at 10 mph over long distances.

Download or read book Giraffe written by J. M. Ledgard and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-07-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An astounding novel based on the true story of the life and mysterious death of the largest herd of giraffes ever held in captivity, in a Czechoslovakian town sleepwalking through communism in the early 1970s. In 1975, on the eve of May Day, secret police dressed in chemical warfare suits sealed off a zoo in a small Czechoslovakian town and ordered the destruction of the largest captive herd of giraffes in the world. This apparently senseless massacre lies at the heart of J. M. Ledgard's haunting first novel, which recounts the story of the giraffes from their capture in Africa to their deaths far away behind the Iron Curtain. At once vivid and unearthly, Giraffe is an unforgettable story about strangeness, about creatures that are alien and silent, about captivity, and finally about Czechoslovakia, a middling totalitarian state and its population of sleepwalkers. It is also a story that might never have been told. Ledgard, a foreign correspondent for the Economist since 1995, unearthed the long-buried truth behind the deaths of these giraffes while researching his book, spending years following leads throughout the Czech Republic. In prose reminiscent of Italo Calvino and W. G. Sebald, he imbues the story with both a gripping sense of specificity and a profound resonance, limning the ways the giraffes enter the lives of the people around them, the secrecy and fear that permeate 1970s Czechoslovakia, and the quiet ways in which ordinary people become complicit in the crimes committed in their midst.
