This book was released on 1983 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flooding is caused by the overflow of the main stem of Kinley Creek and its tributary K-2 which flows to the southeast of the town of Irmo and to the west northwest of the City of Columbia. The flood problems discussed in this report are based on information obtained from local officials as to specific areas of concern, topographic mapping with five-foot contour intervals, and a field reconnaissance by the Corp's study team. Local officials report that flooding has occurred, however, details of the damages suffered or information on frequencies were not furnished. The objectives of this phase of the investigation are to determine the feasibility of further Federal involvement in addressing the flooding problems and to develop a detailed study plan. Should further study be needed, the objectives would be to formulate alternative measures to alleviate flood damage and to select the best course of action to alleviate these problems.

Book Synopsis Little River, Laurens County, South Carolina, Reconnaissance Report by : CORPS OF ENGINEERS CHARLESTON SC CHARLESTON DISTRICT.
Download or read book Little River, Laurens County, South Carolina, Reconnaissance Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS CHARLESTON SC CHARLESTON DISTRICT. and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little River Channel does not have the capacity to carry flood waters. It frequently overflows, damaging homes, businesses, and public properties. Some lands are not being utilized to their highest potential due to the flood threat. The problem is becoming more acute as the City of Laurens develops. The proposed plan of improvement is clearing and snagging that portion of Little River extending from South Carolina Route 37 upstream to S.C. Route 127. Channel enlargement would extend from S.C. Route 127 upstream a distance of 2.38 miles on Little River to a point 1,640 feet above confluence with Reedy Fork Creek. Channel enlargement on Reedy Fork creek would extend from its confluence with Little River upstream a distance of 5,410 feet. The improvement ends 100 feet downstream from the dike at the Laurens municipal emergency water supply pumphouse. Right-of-way requirements will vary from 250 feet in the lower reach to 230 feet in the upper reach of Little River and 200 feet on Reedy Fork Creek. There are favorable sites for a flood control structure in the upper reach of Little River. A flood control structure did not appear to be feasible during this study but will be re-evaluated in the detailed study. Local sponsors have requested that water supply be evaluated in connection with any flood control structure.
Book Synopsis Turkey Creek, Sumter County, South Carolina Reconnaissance Report by : R. E. Rich
Download or read book Turkey Creek, Sumter County, South Carolina Reconnaissance Report written by R. E. Rich and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing channel has, in most cases, good depth but lacks channel capacity to carry out flood waters. Silt, vegetation and debris are reducing capacity in the lower reaches. Culverts, bridges, sewer lines and water mains are further reducing capacity. The stream readily overflows damaging homes, businesses and public properties. Some lands are not being utilized to their highest use due to hazard of flooding. The problem is becoming more acute as Sumter and vicinity continues its rapid deployment. The proposed plan of improvement is for channel enlargement from the outlet at the Pocotaligo River to a point 400 feet north of East Calhoun Street. The proposed improved channel will ahve a 60-foot bottom at the outlet and a 16-foot botm in the upper reach. The channel improvement will have a total length of 4.5 miles. Right-of-way requirements will vary from 200 feet in the lower reach to 100 feet in the upper reach.

Book Synopsis Alternatives for Managing the Nation's Complex Contaminated Groundwater Sites by : National Research Council
Download or read book Alternatives for Managing the Nation's Complex Contaminated Groundwater Sites written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the United States, thousands of hazardous waste sites are contaminated with chemicals that prevent the underlying groundwater from meeting drinking water standards. These include Superfund sites and other facilities that handle and dispose of hazardous waste, active and inactive dry cleaners, and leaking underground storage tanks; many are at federal facilities such as military installations. While many sites have been closed over the past 30 years through cleanup programs run by the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. EPA, and other state and federal agencies, the remaining caseload is much more difficult to address because the nature of the contamination and subsurface conditions make it difficult to achieve drinking water standards in the affected groundwater. Alternatives for Managing the Nation's Complex Contaminated Groundwater Sites estimates that at least 126,000 sites across the U.S. still have contaminated groundwater, and their closure is expected to cost at least $110 billion to $127 billion. About 10 percent of these sites are considered "complex," meaning restoration is unlikely to be achieved in the next 50 to 100 years due to technological limitations. At sites where contaminant concentrations have plateaued at levels above cleanup goals despite active efforts, the report recommends evaluating whether the sites should transition to long-term management, where risks would be monitored and harmful exposures prevented, but at reduced costs.
