Book excerpt: Hospitality has always been a central theme in Christianity. This hospitality sets the message of Christ apart from any other religion or set of beliefs. It is evident that the sense of hospitality we see within our culture is a far cry from what the Bible would have us to live in. The Beloved Gaius seeks to make us more aware of Biblical hospitality by walking through John’s words in his letter to a man named Gaius. What we see in Gaius is a clear picture of the power and presence that Jesus has given us to walk in.

Book excerpt: Gaius Meets Cicero. Law and Rhetoric in the School Controversies sheds new light on a much debated issue in the field of Roman law, i.e. the so-called 'school controversies' between the Sabinians and the Proculians. Tessa Leesen rejects the general assumption in modern literature that the two schools each adhered to a fundamentally different theoretical conception of law. She argues that the 'school controversies' as described in Gaius' Institutiones arose in legal practice when the heads of the two schools were consulted by two conflicting parties and each gave opposing advice. In order to make their opinions persuasive, the jurists were in need of adequate arguments. For this purpose, they made use of rhetoric and of the argumentative theory of topoi as described in Cicero's Topica.

Book excerpt: An ancient Roman history text, translated by Charles Yonge, and written by the Greek philosopher Philo of Alexandria. The Embassy to Gaius was a meeting between Gaius Caligula, the then Roman Emperor, and a large contingent of Jews. They wished to overturn Gaius' plans to have a huge statue of Zeus installed in the temple. Gaius' hatred of the Jews is legendary. This book is important because it helps to understand the relations between Jews and Romans in the first century A.D.

Book excerpt: Gaius Valerius Flaccus was a first century Roman poet that flourished during the Flavian dynasty. His sole surviving work is the Latin epic poem ‘Argonautica’, which owes a large debt to the epic poem commonly ascribed to Apollonius of Rhodes, composed four centuries before. It narrates the story of Jason and the Argonauts and their quest for the Golden Fleece, with many differences from its Greek model. Valerius is notably more descriptive in his portrayal of character, while indicating the influence of Virgil. An important work of the Latin Silver Age, the epic poem’s greatest strength is the portrayal of the relationship between Medea and Jason, especially in the vivid depiction of the growth of Medea’s love. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts.
