Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A middle grade fantasy book that both teens and young adults will enjoy! Perfect for kids who love adventure and fantasy stories! A young man named Jasper discovers a young joey kangaroo one day while out on a hunt and saves it from the dingoes. After rescuing the kangaroo he decides to raise it himself, since the mother had abandoned it. Years later he will be shocked to find out why it was abandoned, since this kangaroo in particular seems to have grown bigger then any kangaroo the boy had ever seen before. Soon the kangaroo outgrows Jasper's shack, so both decide that they should find some place better. The day Jasper mounts Kaylia's back will change his life, for that day he discovered that if you had a way to hold on it was actually possible to mount the kangaroo and ride it. Soon after while in one of the local towns the head of the messenger services in their realm notices Jasper and his mount, and decides that the boy would be able to make a fairly decent messenger. So he inquires the boy about becoming a messenger to run mail and packages around their country of Northern Austra while astride the back of his giant kangaroo. Meanwhile, Jasper also eventually tries to seek out the other giant kangaroos in an effort to be able to eventually release Kaylia, so that she can return to where she belongs and have her freedom as he believes she could. At the time he doesn't believe that she belongs with him, since she should be free and be able to live in the wild. For he knows that if she would have never been attacked by the dingoes that she would have grown up as a wild, and free giant kangaroo. Jasper will do all he can to try to get the chance to release Kaylia back into the wild, if that's even possible. Come along for the ride of your life as a mounted messenger on the back of a kangaroo in The Kangaroo's Messenger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is familiar with the dodo and the wooly mammoth, but how many people have heard of the scimitar cat and the Falkland Island fox? Extinct Animals portrays over 60 remarkable animals that have been lost forever during the relatively recent geological past. Each entry provides a concise discussion of the history of the animal—how and where it lived, and how it became extinct—as well as the scientific discovery and analysis of the creature. In addition, this work examines what led to extinction—from the role of cyclical swings in the Earth's climate to the spread of humans and their activities. Many scientists believe that we are in the middle of a mass extinction right now, caused by the human undermining of the earth's complex systems that support life. Understanding what caused the extinction of animals in the past may help us understand and prevent the extinction of species in the future. Extinct Animals examines the biology and history of some of the most interesting creatures that have ever lived, including: The American Terror Bird, which probably became extinct over 1 million years ago, who were massive predators, some of which were almost 10 feet tall; the Rocky Mountain Locust, last seen in 1902, formed the most immense animal aggregations ever known, with swarms estimated to include over 10 trillion insects; the Giant Ground Sloth, which was as large as an elephant; and the Neandertals, the first Europeans, which co-existed with prehistoric Homo sapiens. Extinct Animals includes illustrations—many created for the work—that help the reader visualize the extinct creature, and each entry concludes with a list of resources for those who wish to do further research.

Book excerpt: In this, the only up-to-date accessible and scientifically based book on Australia's principal icon, internationally known kangaroo researcher Terry Dawson gets to the heart of what makes these animals special. He shows how many features of their biology, such as their reproductive patterns, social structure and locomotor characteristics, confer great advantages in their adaptations to Australia's harsh climate and demanding environment. Besides covering widely the biology, ecology and behaviour of the ten different types of kangaroos, Professor Dawson compares European and Aboriginal cultural attitudes towards them. He explores such issues as hunting habits, conservation, kangaroos as agricultural pests, the economics of kangaroo ranching and the use of their products.

The stage is set for an outrageous adventure: three people, one van, on an epic, 20,000 mile road trip around Australia. What could possibly go wrong? Of course, the van - nicknamed 'Rusty' - is a crumbling wreck, held together by the world's most garish paint job. They're criss-crossing the continent through some of the most inhospitable land on the planet - the infamous Aussie Outback. And isn't there something about Australian animals being... well, you know, kind of dangerous? Unprepared, under-qualified and hopelessly inept, Tony battles gigantic pumpkins, mechanical mishaps and suicidal kangaroos, armed only with a thong and a sense of humour. His companions struggle to keep him safe whilst climbing in drag, snowboarding off cliffs, and hiking hundreds of miles through the bush. One thing's for sure; this 'adventure of a lifetime' - if they survive it - is something they're never going to forget. So, scull those stubbies! Grab your galahs! And put down that platypus. LOOK OUT, AUSTRALIA! There's an idiot coming...

Book excerpt: Like the Sydney Opera House or Uluru, the kangaroo is a unique symbol of Australia. This is the remarkable story of our most famous marsupial, from its ancient origins and prehistoric significance to current-day management and conservation. Marsupial specialists Stephen Jackson and Karl Vernes examine our sustained fascination with kangaroos-spanning 40,000 years-that allows these engaging marsupials to be instantly recognised by people the world over. The amazing diversity of this group of animals is revealed, ranging from tiny forest dwellers and tree kangaroos to large majestic animals living on the open plains of central Australia and the giant kangaroos that once roamed the Pleistocene landscape. The authors also investigate the natural history of kangaroos - their unique reproduction methods, intriguing behaviour, varied diet and trademark hopping abilit - all of which make them such fascinating animals.

The illustrations are adapted from their original paintings of the story. Hector Jandany and George Dingmarie of the Kija Language Group said, 'We have to keep this language which we got from our old people who have passed away. We don't want to lose it. The younger generation has to carry on the language that they learn from us.'
