Leo Frederick lost his wife two years ago. Now, still grieving, he is haunted by the ghosts of two women who clearly want something from him. As he slowly gathers a group of friends to help him get to the bottom of things, it soon becomes clear that a fifteen-year-old case of a missing woman may somehow be involved. The situation becomes more sinister as they are all subjected to arson, attempted murder and abduction... someone is sending them a message. A tense finale on the South Downs brings the story to a close... or does it?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 short stories, and over 25 images from the stories.Myths, Legends, Ghosts & Mysteries of historic Kent, Just like anyone else born in Kent, we grew up being told stories of the villages where we lived. Many were local legends, like the ghostly highwayman of Oxney Bottom, which spooked generations of children from the village. As well the ghost stories there were fascinating legends like Grey Dolphin. Did Robert de Shurland really kill his horse on the word of a local witch? Was that church in Gravesend really visited by aliens? If you ask the locals you will get ten different versions of the story. With Kent being the eldest county in England it's reasonable to expect a few famous names and events to have links here, yet Kent has an abundance of them.Names and events that when you hear them for the first time leaves you thinking "wow I didn't know that" Did you know about Kent's own "Bermuda Triangle", what about the Kentish folk who saw battle at Trafalgar or at Rorkes Drift, or even the Titanic passenger from Sittingbourne?Throughout the generations these stories have been told and re-told thousands of times and with each telling the story grows and adapts a little bit more. The stories we have written in this book are the versions, which we have come to know and love. How historically accurate they are could be debated forever, although the basic facts of many of the stories are 100% accurate as our research has found. We leave you to decide, fact or fiction, myth or legend or a mixture of all four.So join us on a journey across history and through the towns and villages immortalised in Kentish folklore and see how many times you say..."Wow I didn't know that"

Book excerpt: Focusing on the ways in which women writers from across the political spectrum engage with and adapt Wollstonecraft's political philosophy in order to advocate feminist reform, Andrew McInnes explores the aftermath of Wollstonecraft's death, the controversial publication of William Godwin's memoir of his wife, and Wollstonecraft's reception in the early nineteenth century. McInnes positions Wollstonecraft within the context of the eighteenth-century female philosopher figure as a literary archetype used in plays, poetry, polemic and especially novels, to represent the thinking woman and address anxieties about political, religious, and sexual heterodoxy. He provides detailed analyses of the ways in which women writers such as Mary Hays, Elizabeth Hamilton, Amelia Opie, and Maria Edgeworth negotiate Wollstonecraft's reputation as personal, political, and sexual pariah to reformulate her radical politics for a post-revolutionary Britain in urgent need of reform. Frances Burney's The Wanderer and Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, McInnes suggests, work as state-of-the-nation novels, drawing on Wollstonecraft's ideas to explore a changing England. McInnes concludes with an examination of Mary Shelley's engagement with her mother throughout her career as a novelist, arguing that Shelley gradually overcomes her anxiety over her mother's stature to address Wollstonecraft's ideas with increasing confidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of research on the Gothic Revival. The Gothic Revival was based on emotion rather than reason and when Horace Walpole created Strawberry Hill House, a gleaming white castle on the banks of the Thames, he had to create new words to describe the experience of gothic lifestyle. Nevertheless, Walpole’s house produced nightmares and his book The Castle of Otranto was the first truly gothic novel, with supernatural, sensational and Shakespearean elements challenging the emergent fiction of social relationships. The novel’s themes of violence, tragedy, death, imprisonment, castle battlements, dungeons, fair maidens, secrets, ghosts and prophecies led to a new genre encompassing prose, theatre, poetry and painting, whilst opening up a whole world of imagination for entrepreneurial female writers such as Mary Shelley, Joanna Baillie and Ann Radcliffe, whose immensely popular books led to the intense inner landscapes of the Bronte sisters. Matthew Lewis’s The Monk created a new gothic: atheistic, decadent, perverse, necrophilic and hellish. The social upheaval of the French Revolution and the emergence of the Romantic movement with its more intense (and often) atheistic self-absorption led the gothic into darker corners of human experience with a greater emphasis on the inner life, hallucination, delusion, drug addiction, mental instability, perversion and death and the emerging science of psychology. The intensity of the German experience led to an emphasis on doubles and schizophrenic behaviour, ghosts, spirits, mesmerism, the occult and hell. This volume charts the origins of this major shift in social perceptions and completes a trilogy of Palgrave Handbooks on the Gothic—combined they provide an exhaustive survey of current research in Gothic studies, a go-to for students and researchers alike.
