Book excerpt: The book follows a first edition published in 1989, which focused on the severe economic crisis Ghana faced during the late 1970s and the early 1980s. In this second edition, the authors extend the review up to the mid-2010s, covering the entire period since independence, with a special focus on shifts in economic policy, starting with the adoption of the Economic Recovery Programme in 1983. Huq and Tribe provide systematic coverage of Ghanaian economic development since its independence, reviewing the two main modes of development that have been practiced; and offer an updated, rich data bank. By analyzing the wider macroeconomy of Ghana; its individual sectors; money, banking and trade; infrastructure and environmental policies; and Ghana’s poverty, welfare and income distribution, the authors are able to draw vital lessons from the country’s economic development.

Book excerpt: Developing countries - given their extreme economic vulnerability - are likely to be better served by maintaining flexible exchange rate regimes. That is the finding of this informative and enlightening book. Presenting unique theoretical and econometric analysis of the current account of the balance of payments of Nigeria and Ghana, this book examines the features common to the economic position of developing countries (such as recurring deficits and continual increases in external debt). The book presents a number of new theoretical modifications to the standard version of the value model of the current account, in order to reflect the major characteristics of developing economies. The book also uses rigorous econometric analyses to determine the validity of theoretical models, and examines the sustainability of these various countries' current account deficits.

Book Synopsis Ghana Social Protection Assessment and Public Expenditure Review by : Weltbank
Download or read book Ghana Social Protection Assessment and Public Expenditure Review written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the last two decades, Ghana's economy has been on a high growth path, which has been accompanied by significant reduction in poverty. Despite this progress, large macroeconomic imbalances threaten growth and continued poverty reduction. Rapid economic growth and poverty reduction has been accompanied by growing inequality in terms of income and geographical areas. The Government of Ghana (GoG) has a comprehensive national social protection strategy (NSPS) in place and is finalizing the national social protection policy. Given existing macroeconomic challenges, resources allocated to social protection programs should be used in the most cost-effective and pro-poor manner. This assessment aims to contribute to the rationalization of social protection public expenditures, building on recent work by the GoG. This report updates the analysis on core social assistance programs, active labor market programs, social insurance schemes including the national health insurance scheme, and general fuel and electricity subsidies. To establish a more effective and sustainable social protection system, the report recommends addressing the following four challenges: consolidating the substantial gains achieved to date and building a stronger program portfolio; strengthening expenditure management; expanding well-targeted programs and rationalizing poorly targeted programs; and ensuring the sustainability of key programs.
