Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large external shocks in recent years exacerbated pre-existing fiscal and debt vulnerabilities, resulting in an acute crisis in 2022. In response, the authorities have adjusted macroeconomic policies, made significant progress on a comprehensive debt restructuring, and launched wide-ranging reforms. These efforts are bearing fruit, and signs of economic stabilization are emerging. Growth in 2023 has proven resilient, inflation has declined, and the fiscal and external positions have improved. Nonetheless, fully and durably restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability and fostering a sustainable increase in economic growth and poverty reduction will require steadfast policy and reform implementation.
Book Synopsis The Ills of Aid by : Eberhard Reusse
Download or read book The Ills of Aid written by Eberhard Reusse and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-06-15 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development experts make misjudgments or are adversely pressured by funding concerns. Programs are unevaluated and unaccountable to donors, perpetuating themselves long after they're proved ineffective or inefficient. And throughout the book, Reusse demonstrates the principal systemic flaw: unrealistic interventionist paradigms - that is, Western notions of Third World realities that misidentify needs for intervention - at the root of most inappropriate development policies. The problems continue to this day."

Book Synopsis Developing Agricultural Trade by : M. Hubbard
Download or read book Developing Agricultural Trade written by M. Hubbard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-12-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food security is of vital importance to all nations, but particularly so in developing countries. Governments worldwide are seeking to liberalize agricultural trade, and to change their role from one of controlling trade and prices. Instead these governments seek new roles in encouraging market developments, ensuring quality and providing food security by giving income assistance rather than controlling food supplies. The issue of how this process is being managed in developing countries is the focus of this book. A series of case studies including India, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Ivory Coast highlights the individuality of approaches and the varying capability and will of governments to take on these new roles.

Download or read book Poverty and Social Impact Analysis written by Ms.Caroline M. Kende-Robb and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to present some early experiences of poverty and social impact analysis (PSIA) from the PRGF-supported programs in the African Department. The paper illustrates that many staff country reports have taken a first step toward PSIA by making more explicit the links between poverty and policies. Various examples highlight that even though relationships can be complex and analysis, as a result, may not be definitive, it is possible to assess some of the potential poverty effects even in countries with limited data, and therefore contribute to a more informed policy debate and design. The paper concludes that PSIA can help design policies that are more pro-poor, better define appropriate compensatory and complementary measures where appropriate, and support country ownership of reforms by promoting a public debate on trade-offs between policy choices. In light of this, the paper proposes that PRGF policy advice would benefit from more systematic PSIA and that staff country reports could report more on the potential policy trade-offs and poverty outcomes based on PSIA.

Book Synopsis The role of livestock in food security, poverty reduction and wealth creation in West Africa by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book The role of livestock in food security, poverty reduction and wealth creation in West Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the objective of gaining a better insight into the challenges and opportunities of the livestock sub-sector in West Africa, FAO has conducted several studies and held various workshops in recent years. The outcomes of these studies and workshops conducted between 2009 and 2014 were published and distributed as hard copy reports and disseminated as on-line publications. These reports included topics such as value chains, cross-border transhumance, animal feed resources, priority animal diseases, among others, were informative in their own right. Still, the fact that they targeted specific areas of livestock in a fragmented manner did not address the need of readers whose wish was to have a comprehensive understanding of the livestock sector in West Africa. It is in response to this demand for a comprehensive outlook of the West African Livestock sub-sector that different reports and studies have been compiled into this one book. The book has twelve chapters, covering almost all aspects of livestock in the region. Attempts were made to enrich the information provided by including eight short case studies focusing on different aspects of the livestock sub-sector in West Africa. The book attempts to fill the gap of a need for comprehensive information on the potential, performance, challenges, and prospects of the livestock sub-sector in West Africa.

Book Synopsis Trade, Exchange Rate, and Agricultural Pricing Policies in Ghana by : J. Dirck Stryker
Download or read book Trade, Exchange Rate, and Agricultural Pricing Policies in Ghana written by J. Dirck Stryker and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report shows that Ghana's economic decline of agricultural prices cannot be attributed solely to government price intervention. But intervention in the workings of the cocoa sector contributed heavly to the country's inability to achieve prosperity and stability after 1957. During the decades since independence in 1957, direct intervention in Ghana's all-important cocoa sector has been in the hands of a Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB), which sets annual producer prices, purchases the crop from domestic producers and markets it to foreign buyers. Although the chief reason for creating the CMB was to assure Ghana's cocoa farmers a stable and decent income, the agency's direct intervention helped to keep producer prices lower than they might have been otherwise. The government's direct and indirect intervention in the cocoa market, according to the study, far outweighed its incentives to cocoa producers. Moreover, most of the benefits of these incentives went to large producers rather than the far more numerous smallholders. Another important finding of this study is that government regulation of the cocoa sector had the serious negative long-term effect of deferring the replacement of old coffee trees with new ones.
