Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to train verification engineers on the breadth of technologies available and to give them a utilitarian methodology for making effective use of those technologies. The book is easy to understand and a joy to read. Its organization follows a ‘typical’ verification project from inception to completion, (planning to closure). The book elucidates concepts using non-technical terms and clear entertaining explanations. Analogies to other fields are employed to keep the book light-hearted and interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHARME’99 is the tenth in a series of working conferences devoted to the dev- opment and use of leading-edge formal techniques and tools for the design and veri?cation of hardware and systems. Previous conferences have been held in Darmstadt (1984), Edinburgh (1985), Grenoble (1986), Glasgow (1988), Leuven (1989), Torino (1991), Arles (1993), Frankfurt (1995) and Montreal (1997). This workshop and conference series has been organized in cooperation with IFIP WG 10. 5. It is now the biannual counterpart of FMCAD, which takes place every even-numbered year in the USA. The 1999 event took place in Bad Her- nalb, a resort village located in the Black Forest close to the city of Karlsruhe. The validation of functional and timing behavior is a major bottleneck in current VLSI design systems. A predominantly academic area of study until a few years ago, formal design and veri?cation techniques are now migrating into industrial use. The aim of CHARME’99 is to bring together researchers and users from academia and industry working in this active area of research. Two invited talks illustrate major current trends: the presentation by G ́erard Berry (Ecole des Mines de Paris, Sophia-Antipolis, France) is concerned with the use of synchronous languages in circuit design, and the talk given by Peter Jansen (BMW, Munich, Germany) demonstrates an application of formal methods in an industrial environment. The program also includes 20 regular presentations and 12 short presentations/poster exhibitions that have been selected from the 48 submitted papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verification isjob one in today's modem design process. Statistics tell us that the verification process takes up a majority of the overall work. Chips that come back dead on arrival scream that verification is at fault for not finding the mistakes. How do we ensure success? After an accomplishment, have you ever had someone ask you, "Are you good or are you just lucky?"? Many design projects depend on blind luck in hopes that the chip will work. Other's, just adamantly rely on their own abilities to bring the chip to success. ill either case, how can we tell the difference between being good or lucky? There must be a better way not to fail. Failure. No one likes to fail. ill his book, "The Logic of Failure", Dietrich Domer argues that failure does not just happen. A series of wayward steps leads to disaster. Often these wayward steps are not really logical, decisive steps, but more like default omissions. Anti-planning if you will, an ad-hoc approach to doing something. To not plan then, is to fail.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on web service specification, search, composition, validation, resiliency, security and engineering, and discusses various service specification standards like WSDL, SAWSDL, WSMO and OWLS. The theory and associated algorithms for service specification verification are detailed using formal models like Petrinet, FSM and UML. The book also explores various approaches proposed for web service search and composition, highlighting input/output, parameter-based search, and selection of services based on both functional and non-functional parameters. In turn, it examines various types of composite web services and presents an overview of popular fault handling strategies for each of these types. Lastly, it discusses the standards used for implementing web service security on the basis of a case study, and introduces the Web Service Development Life Cycle (WSDLC), which defines co-operation between several industry partners to develop web services in a more structured way.

Book excerpt: While the subject of migration has received enormous attention in academic journals and books across the social sciences, introductory texts on the matter are few and far between. Even fewer books have explored migration through a critical and explicit engagement with spatial concepts. Now in its second edition, Migration remains the only text in more than a decade that emphasizes how geographical or spatial concepts can be used critically to understand migration. The multi-disciplinary text draws on insights from human geography, political science, social anthropology, sociology, and to a lesser extent economics. All of the chapters focus on key terms, theories, concepts, and issues concerning migration and immigration. The book argues that in the context of migration, two opposing ‘spatial positions’ have emerged in the wake of the critique of ‘methodological nationalism’. On one hand is the significance of ‘transnationalism’, and on the other, the importance of ‘sub-national’ or local processes. Both require more nuance and integration, while many of the concepts and theories which have thus far neglected space or have not been ‘treated’ spatially, need to be re-written with space in mind. Pedagogically the text combines a carefully defined structure, accessible language, boxes that explore case studies of migrant-related experiences in particular places, annotated suggestions for further reading, useful websites and relevant films and summary questions for student learning at the end of each chapter. Migration provides a critical, multi-disciplinary, advanced, and theoretically informed introduction to migration and immigration. Revised and updated with new material, new maps and illustrations and an accompanying website (https://migration2ndedition.wordpress.com/), it continues to be aimed at advanced undergraduates and Masters-level graduate students undertaking courses on migration and immigration.

Wolfgang Ruck 1 Institute of Natural and Technogenic Disasters, Udmurt State University, Izhevsk (Russia), 2 Institute of Ecology and Environmental Chemistry, University Lüneburg (Germany) During the Cold War a whole arsenal of deadly chemical weapons was allowed to build up on both sides of the ideological divide. Happily, today the problems are reversed. Expertise is now required in the field of safe and environment-friendly disposal of chemical weapons and cleaning up of contaminated sites all around the world, but not least in the ex-Soviet-led countries. The participants and speakers to the NATO-Russia advanced research workshop on the “Ecological Risks Associated with the Destruction of nd th Chemical Weapons”, hosted by the University of Lüneburg on 22 - 26 October, 2003, therefore, came from many different parts of the world. Of the eight countries represented at the workshop, two were ex-Eastern- Block, and six were Western countries. Yet the West was by no means overrepresented. On the contrary, the Russian expert-speaker contingent, with 33 participants, did justice to the size of their country – and to their chemical-weapons problem – and provided the majority of active participants. In all, there were 57 participants, of which 11 dispatched from the TACIS project “The development of the chemical weapons” facility at the detached plant No 4 of OAO Khimprom, Novocheboksarsk.

Book excerpt: This series in Computers and Medicine had its origins when I met Jerry Stone of Springer-Verlag at a SCAMC meeting in 1982. We determined that there was a need for good collections of papers that would help disseminate the results of research and application in this field. I had already decided to do what is now Information Systems for Patient Care, and Jerry contributed the idea of making it part of a series. In 1984 the first book was published, and-thanks to Jerry's efforts - Computers and Medicine was underway. Since that time, there have been many changes. Sadly, Jerry died at a very early age and cannot share in the success of the series that he helped found. On the bright side, however, many of the early goals of the series have been met. As the result of equipment improvements and the consequent lowering of costs, com puters are being used in a growing number of medical applications, and the health care community is very computer literate. Thus, the focus of concern has turned from learning about the technology to understanding how that technology can be exploited in a medical environment.
