Book Synopsis Higher Education in England and France Since the 1980s by : Cécile Deer
Download or read book Higher Education in England and France Since the 1980s written by Cécile Deer and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthetic analysis of the rapid developments that have occurred in English and French higher education since the beginning of the 1980s. The purpose is not to decide which of the two systems is better today, nor is it about formulating advice on policy or best practice borrowing. The aim is to identify and clarify converging or diverging trends and policies, ideals and structures between the two countries since the 1980s in order to build a cross-national understanding of changes in this area of public policy. The book is conceived as a follow-up to the framework of understanding developed by Margaret Archer in Social Origins of Educational Systems (1979). First, change is comprehensively interpreted using this approach. Then the power of other explanatory frameworks (in particular, that developed by Niklas Luhmann and contradicted by Jürgen Habermas) is assessed so as to determine which provides the most convincing account to help understand the recent developments observed. Far from being antithetical, the three models of understanding of social evolution (morphogenesis, self-differentiation and communicative action) prove to be rich in potential for cross-fertilisation.

Practice questions are also provided, and will prove particularly helpful for externally assessed units. Much of this book is completely new - reflecting a major syllabus revision that has taken place. The inclusion of the key optional unit, Applied Science and Mathematics for Engineering, extends the book in a way that will really make it core reading for all Intermediate GNVQ students. This book is the only text endorsed by Edexcel for Intermediate and Foundation engineering GNVQs. The content of the optional unit has also been designed to match City & Guilds requirements.

Book Synopsis Basic Engineering Mathematics by : John Bird
Download or read book Basic Engineering Mathematics written by John Bird and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-03-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most engineering maths texts, this book does not assume a firm grasp of GCSE maths, and unlike low-level general maths texts, the content is tailored specifically for the needs of engineers. The result is a unique book written for engineering students, which takes a starting point below GCSE level. Basic Engineering Mathematics is therefore ideal for students of a wide range of abilities, and especially for those who find the theoretical side of mathematics difficult. All students taking vocational engineering courses who require fundamental knowledge of mathematics for engineering and do not have prior knowledge beyond basic school mathematics, will find this book essential reading. The content has been designed primarily to meet the needs of students studying Level 2 courses, including GCSE Engineering and Intermediate GNVQ, and is matched to BTEC First specifications. However Level 3 students will also find this text to be a useful resource for getting to grips with the essential mathematics concepts needed for their study, as the compulsory topics required in BTEC National and AVCE / A Level courses are also addressed. The fourth edition incorporates new material on adding waveforms, graphs with logarithmic scales, and inequalities – key topics needed for GCSE and Level 2 study. John Bird’s approach is based on numerous worked examples, supported by 600 worked problems, followed by 1050 further problems within exercises included throughout the text. In addition, 15 Assignments are included at regular intervals. Ideal for use as tests or homework, full solutions to the Assignments are supplied in the accompanying Instructor’s Manual, available as a free download for lecturers from http://textbooks.elsevier.com.
