Book excerpt: A magnificent new romance by New York Times bestselling author Emma Chase. Dean Walker is all about keeping life simple. He's effortlessly talented and intelligent—spending his summers playing drums in the local band and the rest of the year teaching high school in the same Jersey town where he grew up. He likes his love life simple too, enjoying the commitment-free hook-ups his good looks and sexy charm have always made oh so easy. Then he meets Lainey Burrows. And his simple, easy life gets turned upside down. One wild one-night stand was all it was ever supposed to be, so Lainey is shocked when she discovers that her sizzling summer fling is also her son's new math teacher. But that's nothing compared to the most unexpected twist of all—their hot hook-up left Lainey knocked up, and now they're about to become parents. Together. What ensues is an addictive, insatiable, sweet and tender romance that won't be simple, but it will be more than worth the fight. "This story was fast paced, wickedly sharp and, brought to life by supremely stellar narration, it's another unputdownable story I never wanted to end." –Jessica, Angie and Jessica's Dreamy Reads "Getting Played is equal parts funny, sexy, sweet and moving and is superbly narrated by the well-matched team of Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber, who deftly portray both the lighthearted, humorous banter and the more emotional dialogue and intimate moments. The story pulled me in from the start and kept me thoroughly engaged and entertained until it’s sigh-worthy, romantic happily ever after, and it is guaranteed to give the listener all the feels." –Mary Dube, Frolic Media "Getting Played is a downright panty melting, sweep you off your feet audiobook! Throw in the dynamic narration of Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber, that just brought the storyline to a whole new level bliss!! Get ready to have your audio dreams come to life!" –Heather Pollock, Audio Reviewer

Book excerpt: "Sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, and even gang rape are not uncommon experiences for many African American girls living in poor urban neighborhoods. In Getting Played, Jody Miller presents a compelling picture of how inextricably linked such violence is to their daily lives. Drawing from richly textured interviews with adolescent girls and boys, Miller brings a keen eye to how urban neglect and gender inequality coalesce to structure girls' risks for gendered violence. Her analysis shows how young women struggle to navigate this dangerous terrain despite vastly inadequate social and institutional support."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: 2010 Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Book Award from the American Sociological Association; Race, Gender, and Class Section 2008 Finalist, The Society for the Study of Social Problems C. Wright Mills Award Much has been written about the challenges that face urban African American young men, but less is said about the harsh realities for African American young women in disadvantaged communities. Sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, and even gang rape are not uncommon experiences. In Getting Played, sociologist Jody Miller presents a compelling picture of this dire social problem and explores how inextricably, and tragically, linked violence is to their daily lives in poor urban neighborhoods. Drawing from richly textured interviews with adolescent girls and boys, Miller brings a keen eye to the troubling realities of a world infused with danger and gender-based violence. These girls are isolated, ignored, and often victimized by those considered family and friends. Community institutions such as the police and schools that are meant to protect them often turn a blind eye, leaving girls to fend for themselves. Miller draws a vivid picture of the race and gender inequalities that harm these communities—and how these result in deeply and dangerously engrained beliefs about gender that teach youths to see such violence—rather than the result of broader social inequalities—as deserved due to individual girls' flawed characters, i.e., she deserved it. Through Miller's careful analysis of these engaging, often unsettling stories, Getting Played shows us not only how these young women are victimized, but how, despite vastly inadequate social support and opportunities, they struggle to navigate this dangerous terrain.

Book excerpt: In his classic book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni laid out a groundbreaking approach for tackling the perilous group behaviors that destroy teamwork. Here he turns his focus to the individual, revealing the three indispensable virtues of an ideal team player. In The Ideal Team Player, Lencioni tells the story of Jeff Shanley, a leader desperate to save his uncle’s company by restoring its cultural commitment to teamwork. Jeff must crack the code on the virtues that real team players possess, and then build a culture of hiring and development around those virtues. Beyond the fable, Lencioni presents a practical framework and actionable tools for identifying, hiring, and developing ideal team players. Whether you’re a leader trying to create a culture around teamwork, a staffing professional looking to hire real team players, or a team player wanting to improve yourself, this book will prove to be as useful as it is compelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we being played? Is our understanding of the traditionally fixed and static concepts of philosophy based on an oversimplification? This book explores some of the theories of the self since Descartes, together with the rationalism and the empiricism that sustain these ideas, and draws some startling conclusions using Gadamer’s philosophical study of play as its starting point. Gadamer’s ludic theory, Sampson argues, reveals a dynamic of play that exists at the deepest level of philosophy. It is this dynamic that could provide a solution in relation to the Gadamer/Habermas hermeneutics debate and the Gadamer/Derrida relativism debate, together with a theory of totality. Sampson shows how ludic theory can be a game-changer in understanding the relationship between philosophy and literature, exploring the dynamic between the fictive and non-fictive worlds. These worlds are characterized simultaneously by sameness (univocity of Being) and difference (equivocity of Being). The book questions Heidegger’s idea that the univocity of Being is universal, instead maintaining that the relationship between the univocity of Being and equivocity of Being is real, and that ontological mediation is required to present them as a unified whole. Using the works of Shakespeare, Beckett and Wilde, Sampson contends that such a mediation, termed ‘the ludicity of Being’, takes place between literature and its audience. This literary example has profound implications not only for literature and its attendant theories but also for philosophy — in particular, ontology and hermeneutics.

Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book excerpt: A career advisor explains why many talented, hard-working people often miss out on their full career potential, revealing the tells, blind spots, secrets, and unspoken rules you need to know in order to play the game to win. While many careers have been impacted by economic downturns, failed projects, downsizing and restructuring, or just bad bosses or bad timing, we all know of colleagues who continue to rise through every tough situation. Most assume that they have an advantage that protects them—degrees from the right schools, great mentors, influential friends and family, or just better luck. But these hyper-successful professionals have faced setbacks, too. Instead of allowing challenges to derail their rise, they’ve learned how to manage them better. In Workplace Poker, Dan Rust gives you the strategies you need to accelerate your career, and prevent setbacks from stalling your progress or spiraling it downward. The trick, he reveals, is to “play the game under the game,” to think more deeply and act more strategically. If you are talented, ambitious, and hardworking, but feel your career just isn’t accelerating as rapidly as it should, or as fast as you would like it to, this book is for you. If you have been frustrated to see others (less talented, who don’t work as hard as you do) achieve rapid professional progress while your career stalls out, this book is for you. If you’ve been annoyed by those who are successful primarily because of where they went to school, or family connections, or financial resources, this book is for you. Rust gives you the insight and skills you need to transform yourself and adapt and survive any hurdle—to turn every adversity into advantage, and every struggle into strength, including: • Recognition of your own “blind spots” and what to do about them • Mastering strategic and authentic self-promotion • Enhancing your personal charm and likeability • Achieving the high energy, both mental and physical, necessary to drive an exceptional career trajectory • Developing an interest in “corporate anthropology” and the complex human dimensions of business • Neutralizing the career-stalling impact of difficult or dysfunctional colleagues • Deeply “owning” and learning from career missteps and failures In his smart, funny, relatable voice, Rust shares stories of individuals who have applied these capabilities in real world situations, and provides short, focused exercises to help you think about yourself and your own career. With Workplace Poker¸ you’ll learn how to get out of you own way, and find the success you deserve.

Book excerpt: How to Attract Men Worth Dating and Get the Guy You Really Want When it comes to finding a suitable mate for a passion filled, committed relationship, one of the things men want most in a woman is self-possession, or said another way, womanly poise. When high-quality men come across a woman with poise they crave her respect, her approval, and most importantly, her love. Men like this understand that a woman''s poise reflects her self-worth. And they know that a woman can only act with poise when she''s placed a higher importance on her dignity and well-being than she does on ANY man. It is this unique female attitude that drives a man wild with sustainable desire, the kind of desire that makes him eager to commit to a woman and claim her as his own. How to Attractively Set Standards with a Man and Make Him Want You Even More When a woman lacks poise she generally gives too much of herself, and usually at the most ineffective times when dating a man. She is too lenient with men in the beginning stages of a new romance, and she''s prone to compromising her standards just to keep a man in her life. Women like this unknowingly chase men, as they become frantic, frustrated, and foolhardy whenever the guy they want begins to pull away or lose interest in them. A woman with poise never chases or throws herself at a man, nor does she make things easy for him by clearing her schedule "just in case" he calls or comes around. Instead, a woman with poise maintains her mystery, sticks to her standards, and uses her feminine charms to invite men to either pursue her passionately or leave her alone. How to Date like a High-Value Woman and Be Irresistible to Mr. Right It''s easy to show class and character when things are going your way with a guy. But your ability to remain unfazed amid his disrespect or disinterest is what really helps him determine whether you are a high-value woman or not. A man will not always act in ways that are favorable to you. Sure, some men are scumbags, but not all men who act thoughtlessly towards you should be categorized this way. Therefore, if you want to separate the good guys from the time wasters it''s important to act with poise. This book was designed for women who want to go from being powerless to being irresistible to men. In it, you''ll discover the secrets to having more confidence and power with men and dating as you learn the beliefs, attitudes, dating rules, "love habits", and seduction secrets of the high-value woman. Here''s what you''re going to learn inside: What to say when you want to "slow things down" with a guy without losing his interest in you. The most seductive first date "good deed" that can CAPTURE a man''s desire and make him desperate to see you again. The #1 key to conquering a man''s heart during the early dating stages. (This is something most women only figure out after YEARS of painful trial and error.) How to get a boyfriend by avoiding a HUGE relationship-killing mistake most women make within the first few weeks of dating. The single most irresistible feminine attitude that easily overwhelms a man''s emotions and makes it IMPOSSIBLE for him to get you off his mind. How to get a man to treat you like a top priority (instead of his Plan B) once you start dating him. How to maintain the "Queen''s Composure" when men pull away and how to use it to make the good ones come RUNNING back to you. The "dating rules" high-value women use to quickly eliminate players and find Mr. Right. And much, much more... Would You Like to Know More?
