Book excerpt: The Florida Clemency Guide could best be described as a resource handbook with the descriptions and definitions of the terms most commonly used when applying to get a criminal record sealed, expunged or pardoned in the State of Florida. It gives the links to the correct applications on the Florida State website and where to go to get help in filling out those forms. This book was written in response to the series of repeat questions that CeCe got over-and-over again after she started writing her first book, I'm Home...Now What? She found that people were using the wrong terms and so were having a hard time finding out what they were eligible for and which application they should get! CeCe wrote this guide to clear up some common misconceptions about the Clemency Process. CeCe Espeut is a much sought-after consultant for ex-offender re-entry programs and civil rights restoration. She is Florida certified peer support specialist and the author of I'm Home...Now What? which is scheduled to be released early 2017. She writes about her experiences in prison; applying for clemency and her life after prison.

Book excerpt: Florida has nearly 101,000 inmates in 49 major state prisons and numerous correctional facilities called annexes and work camps.A clemency commutation of sentence and parole are alternate paths to the same goal, which is to release the inmate early. Both involve compassion, redemption, and forgiveness, and are the ultimate grant of a second chance. To get either, you must convince elected or appointed officials that the inmate will never commit another serious crime. However, clemency and parole involve different decision-makers, rules and timeframes.Here is the so-called secret sauce (the actual "how-to" steps to leave prison early), written by one of Florida's most distinguished clemency lawyers.

Rather than adopt a posture of resignation, they have met for honest, God-honoring conversation. In Reconciliation Reconsidered, Tanya Brice pulls together the early fruit she has gleaned from this ongoing conversation about racial reconciliation. Learn about yourself in the context of community as you explore these key ideas: •Exercise truth-telling: it's what is needed before any reconciliation can happen •Discover how race relations are not as simple as you think •Challenge your stereotypes •Understand the meaning of current events like the Ferguson shooting in fresh ways •Revisit Christ's teachings with a careful eye toward discipleship and love of your neighbor •Each chapter concludes with discussion questions that can help you and others navigate this perplexing and difficult topic.

Book excerpt: The definitive guide to surviving incarceration in a federal prison. Federal Prison Handbook teaches individuals facing incarceration, prisoners who are already inside, and their friends and family everything they need to know to protect themselves and their rights. The thorough information has been compiled by an advocate currently serving time at a federal prison. His insider's view of this unknown world guides inmates through the mental stresses of confinement. Equally as important, he keeps readers physically safe by explaining how to avoid the near-constant conflicts found inside federal prisons. In detailed chapters broken down by topical areas, readers discover: * What to expect during admissions and how to greet cellmates for the first time. * How to communicate with the outside world through telephones, computers, and mail. * What types of items can be purchased from the official commissary and the underground economy. * The best ways to avoid fights, and the options that provide the greatest protection if a fight cannot be avoided. * The knowledge required to avoid scams, schemes, theft, and other problems. * What to do about sexual harassment or assault. * The types of jobs available and their pay grades. * Medical and psychological services. * Religious activities and services. * Entertainment, recreation, and keeping fit. * And much more. Importantly, this text provides detailed instructions on how prisoners can protect their rights. The author is a college-educated prisoner who has fought extensively to preserve his rights and the rights of other prisoners. Incarceration can be cruel for prisoners and their loved ones. Know what to expect and make the best of this time by staying safe, remaining safe, and building a life behind bars.

They do their jobs, they go to school, they don’t commit any infractions, they keep their cells clean and tidy, and they follow the rules. And usually those are our LWOPs [life without parole]. They’re usually our easiest keepers.” Too Easy to Keep directs much-needed attention toward a neglected group of American prisoners—the large and growing population of inmates serving life sentences. Drawing on extensive interviews with lifers and with prison staff, Too Easy to Keep charts the challenges that a life sentence poses—both to the prisoners and to the staffers charged with caring for them. Surprisingly, many lifers show remarkable resilience and craft lives of notable purpose. Yet their eventual decline will pose challenges to the institutions that house them. Rich in data, Too Easy to Keep illustrates the harsh consequences of excessive sentences and demonstrates a keen need to reconsider punishment policy.

Book excerpt: A helpful manual for anyone who has a child, parent, spouse or other loved one either currently incarcerated, or newly released. #13; #13; There are over 2 million American citizens incarcerated in this country. Many of those people have family members or other loved ones on the outside. All of them have been adversely affected by the incarcerated of the loved ones to various degrees And those loved ones can be a tremendous help and resource for the offender when he/she finally gets out of prison. But in many cases, the loved one on the outside has no clue what to do to help their incarcerated loved one. Programs seem to be scarce. Many people asked for help turn in the other direction. Oftentimes the person searching for help finds himself or herself just as lost as the person inside the walls. #13; #13; This new manual by Conquest Reintegration Ministries addresses that experience. This publication is for anyone who is affected by the incarceration, either past or present, of a loved one and wants to do something to help. The manual covers the following topics: #13; #13; #13; Understanding the criminal mind #13; Am I ready to do this? #13; Differentiating between the "right" help and the "wrong" help. #13; How to find resources #13; The return home #13;

Book excerpt: Jai l Time, What you need to know... ...Before you go to federal pr i son Jail Time was a book I never wanted to write. Federal Prison was a place I never wanted to be. Sometimes things just happen that you really can't explain or even know why they happened. They just do. Life is funny that way- one day you are on top of the world and the next day you're in a bottomless pit-you think. But later you discover that the pit's bottom is even deeper. There are many challenges facing those individuals entering federal prison. These challenges are not easy, but they are controllable. Controllable, if you have the proper knowledge, resources, and motivation. The motivation is to get home to your family as soon as possible. This is where Jail Time can help. Jail Time offers solutions to the problems that men and women facing federal incarceration are confronted with. Jail Time provides a wealth of information to help families get through their ordeal together and get the offender back home in the shortest possible amount of time. Born into an impoverished and broken family in Ohio, Michael Frantz studied diligently and graduated with honors from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He continued his studies and earned a post graduate degree from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy with highest honors. With little or no money he started his own home medical equipment business in 1980 and grew it in sales to over $7,000,000 a year. At the height of his business he had six locations in five different Ohio cities. In October of 2002 the FBI raided all six of his stores in what was to become a two year legal and emotional nightmare. They alleged Medicare and tax fraud. In 2004 Mr. Frantz reluctantly accepted a plea agreement and was eventually sentenced in July of 2005 to 51 months in the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) in Miami, Florida. He spent nearly 16 months there. Later he was transferred to the adjacent low security Federal Correctional Institution (FCI). In 2008, he won his appeal and was released from federal prison on July 18, 2008 after serving nearly 36 months in federal confinement. This, as he likes to say, was a life and career changing experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More an art than a science, the reference interview requires not only knowing a specific set of skills, but also how to apply those skills in an ever-changing world. Good reference interviews accomplish three goals: establishing contact with the user, determining what the user’s information need actually is, and checking to make sure that the answer actually meets that need completely. Built around timeless service principles including Ranganathan’s Five Laws, The Reference Interview Today: Negotiating and Answering Questions Face to Face, on the Phone, and Virtually is a practical field guide to conducting reference interviews in every modality: face-to-face, phone, chat, text, virtual world such as Second Life, and even mashup reference interviews where multiple modalities are used to answer the question. Following a concise presentation of reference interview basics, the heart of the book is 12 different reference interview scenarios set in different modes and demonstrating a specific principle. Each of these twelve follows a similar construction: a general overview of the principle (for example, save the time of the reader), a script of the reference interview, and then learning questions designed to demonstrate the principle(s) as illustrated in the script. Examples range from assisting faculty members with scholarly resources to helping a high school student with a paper to assisting a hairdresser with a reference question. One scenario is based in the year 2025 to emphasize the timeless nature of reference service. Seamlessly combining both time-honored principles and multiple technologies, this practical book demonstrates how librarians can be as relevant and necessary in the digital age as in the print world. Appropriate for both novice and experienced librarians as well as for LIS students, this concise handbook speaks to those working in or preparing for careers in public, school, academic, and special libraries..

Because the word on the street is, you’re a racist.” With those blunt words to then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, Pastor Darrell Scott began a journey he never expected to take—becoming the future president’s most prominent African-American supporter and advisor. In Nothing to Lose, Pastor Scott recounts how and why he boarded “the Trump Train,” revealing the considerable difficulties he experienced along the way. As his story progresses, Pastor Scott highlights the accomplishments he, his allies, and members of the Trump administration have worked so hard to earn on behalf of the black community in the United States. Pastor Scott holds absolutely nothing back as he describes: • His transformation from a life of drugs and crime on the streets of Cleveland to a life leading a thriving community church. • Behind-the-scenes stories of Trump’s historic campaign, inauguration, and first term as president. • The blistering criticism he, his family, and his church endured from members of the black community and mainstream media. • Intimate portraits of Trump’s ever-evolving inner circle, including the Trump children, Michael Cohen, Corey Lewandowski, Steve Bannon, Jared Kushner, and Omarosa. • What he truly thinks of former president Barack Obama, and why. • His experience with leading national media figures on both ends of the political spectrum, including Sean Hannity, Don Lemon, and Van Jones. Lastly, Pastor Scott provides a surprising portrait of President Donald Trump himself—his candor; his support for policies, issues, and initiatives important to the African-American community; and his little-understood relationship with Christianity.
