Book Synopsis The Gospel according to Mark by : Camille Focant
Download or read book The Gospel according to Mark written by Camille Focant and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world to which the Gospel of Mark introduces its reader is a world of conflicts and suspense, enigmas and secrets, questions and overturning of evidence, irony and surprise. Its principal actor, Jesus, is perplexing in the extreme. He is evidently so for the religious authorities who oppose him, but also for his disciples, who shift from incomprehension to opposition and flight. Questions of meaning, life and death, good and evil are continually broached. This narrative is a subtle invitation to enter into a new world, that of the coming Reign of God, in which the first are last and whoever wants to save his life must lose it. This commentary on the Gospel of Mark has been enthusiastically reviewed in the French edition as one of the best current commentaries on Mark. As a narrative critical commentary, it favors an interpretation of the Gospel that tries to grasp the dynamic of the text taken as a whole. Even if the technical vocabulary of narrative analysis is not used, and the main results of the historical-critical criticism, particularly those of redaction criticism, are not neglected, as the notes will reveal, it is narrative criticism that guides the proceedings.

Francesco Filannino shows that the introductory section of Mark's Gospel (Mark 1:1-15) is an important key to accessing the whole narrative, because it anticipates the main contents of the evangelist's theology.
Book Synopsis The Rhetoric of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark by : Michael Strickland
Download or read book The Rhetoric of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark written by Michael Strickland and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young and Strickland analyze the four largest discourses of Jesus in Mark in the context of Greco-Roman rhetoric in an attempt to hear them as a first-century audience would have heard them. The authors demonstrate that, contrary to what some historical critics have suggested, first-century audiences of Mark would have found the discourses of Jesus unified, well-integrated, and persuasive. They also show how these speeches of the Markan Jesus contribute to Mark‘s overall narrative accomplishments.

Book Synopsis The Gospel of Mark in Context by : Santiago Guijarro
Download or read book The Gospel of Mark in Context written by Santiago Guijarro and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-14 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short story that we now know as the Gospel according to Mark was written in Greek twenty centuries ago in the context of an agrarian society that had been developing its own characteristics in the circum-Mediterranean region. Mark's account presupposes the values, institutions, and relationships of the culture in which Jesus and his first followers lived. Modern readers of the Gospels, however, especially those born and raised in the North Atlantic postindustrial societies, have other values and institutions, and relate to each other according to other cultural codes. This temporal and cultural distance between the ancient texts and their present-day readers makes necessary an exegetical effort whose purpose is to recover, as far as possible, the reading scenarios presupposed by these texts. In order to reconstruct these scenarios, exegesis has turned in recent years to the social sciences, whose models permit us to imagine and describe the situations presupposed by these ancient texts. This book aims to show how the use of these scenarios elaborated with the help of the social sciences can contribute to a more considered and respectful reading of Mark's story.

Book Synopsis Dionysus, Christ, and the Death of God, Volume 2 by : Giuseppe Fornari
Download or read book Dionysus, Christ, and the Death of God, Volume 2 written by Giuseppe Fornari and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This magisterial reflection on the history and destiny of the West compares Greco-Roman civilization and the Judeo-Christian tradition in order to understand what both unites and divides them. Mediation, understood as a collective, symbolic experience, gives society unity and meaning, putting human beings in contact with a universal object known as the world or reality. But unity has a price: the very force that enables peaceful coexistence also makes us prone to conflict. As a result, in order to find a common point of convergence—of at-one-ment—someone must be sacrificed. Sacrifice, then, is the historical pillar of mediation. It was endorsed in a cosmic-religious sense in antiquity and rejected for ethical reasons in modernity, where the Judeo-Christian tradition plays an intermediate role in condemning sacrificial violence as such, while accepting sacrifice as a voluntary act offered to save other human beings. Today, as we face the collapse of all shared mediations, this intermediating solution offers a way out of our moral and cultural plight.

Download or read book From Jesus to his First Followers: Continuity and Discontinuity written by Adriana Destro and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Jesus to His First Followers examines to what extent early Christian groups were in continuity or discontinuity with respect to Jesus. Adriana Destro and Mauro Pesce concentrate on the transformation of religious practices. Their anthropological-historical analysis focuses on the relations between discipleship and households, on the models of contact with the supernatural world, and on cohabitation among distinct religious groups. The book highlights how Matthew uses non-Jewish instruments of legitimation, John reformulates religious experiences through symbolized domestic slavery, Paul adopts a religious practice diffused in Roman-Hellenistic environments. The book reconstructs the map of early Christian groups in the Land of Israel and explains their divergences on the basis of an original theory of the local origin of Gospels’ information.

Book Synopsis Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament, Vol. 3 by : horst Balz

This book was released on 2004-01-14 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English translation of the three-volume Exegetisches Wrterbuch zum Neuen Testament, this monumental work by an ecumenical group of scholars is first of all a complete English dictionary of New Testament Greek. Going beyond that, however EDNT also serves as a guide to the usage of every New Testament word in its various contexts, and it makes a significant contribution to New Testament exegesis and theology. EDNT's thorough, lengthy discussions of more significant words and its grouping of words related by root and meaning (with alphabetical cross-references) distinguish it from simpler Greek-English lexicons. Advancing the discussion of the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, EDNT summarizes more recent treatments of numerous questions in New Testament study and takes into consideration newer viewpoints of linguistics.
