Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book is about environmental and climate legal protection in the energy transition. The Paris Agreement has a binding commitment of holding the global temperature increase to 2°C while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. To cope with the negative effects of climate changes and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, one of the primary responses has been the deployment of renewable energy sources, transiting from fossil fuels to sustainable electricity production. However, renewable energy sources can also cause significant environmental impacts. Wind energy, for instance, can impact biodiversity, such as birds and bats, killing them when colliding with turbines and affecting their migration and nesting. This results in conflicts in environmental law. This book questions whether, in the energy transition, the generation of electricity from renewable sources to protect the climate is compatible with the protection of the environment, both interests in environmental law. To address this question, this book follows a legal-environmental perspective and assesses the common problem of solving those internal environmental conflicts in Brazilian and German law to understand and compare whether and how both legal systems solve the conflicts by compatibilizing the protection of the climate with other environmental interests. The legal analysis focuses on land-use planning and environmental licensing, assessing similarities and differences, and evaluating the results, identifying what one country can learn from the other.

Book excerpt: As environmental legislation grows more stringent in response to the escalating climate crisis, some of the world’s largest corporations have adopted fraudulent mechanisms to keep their margins of profit, and achieve improper competitive advantage. Such mechanisms can lead to problems in the supply chain, a decrease in market value, diminished trust in brands, increased surveillance of companies, as well as damage to the environment. This book offers a holistic view of the nature and consequences of environmental fraud, bringing together practical examples, empirical research data, and management theory. It will be of interest to academics working in the fields of sustainability management, business ethics, and corporate social and environmental responsibility.

This volume focuses especially on the applications of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management for research and practice. It includes relevant information for academics since most of the chapters focus on real-world case studies and systematic reviews. It also provides valuable insights for professionals in the industrial sector by presenting solutions to complex industrial challenges. The 2023 iteration of the IJCIEOM conference had the theme "Developing resilience in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management" and aimed to analyze the resilience of supply chains in the post-COVID-19 era. The works published in this volume focus on how Digital Transformation (DX) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have made the manufacturing and service industry more resistant to VUCA elements (i.e., volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous). Regarding DX and AI, the research specifically focused on supply chain management, project management, and Industry 4.0. Other studies explore how industrial engineering incorporated innovative and technological concepts into service and product operations. Overall, this volume provides a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners alike as it presents numerous relevant contributions in identifying new challenges and opportunities for industrial engineering and operations management. This conference was sponsored by renowned international industry engineering associations, particularly the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM), the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE), and the Asociación para el Desarrollo de la Ingeniería de Organización (ADINGOR).

Book excerpt: This book is a truly interdisciplinary publication, useful to scholars, social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies and private companies, undertaking research and/or executing projects focusing on social responsibility and sustainability from across the world.Sustainable development has become a matter of central concern to both public institutions and enterprises. Indeed, for many companies, a due emphasis to environmental issues is not only positive from the point of view of environmental gains, but also to the image of the business. Often, but not always, this is reflected in the preparation of formal strategies and programmes, which entail their institutional strategies and visions. The wide area of social responsibility, often known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), entails elements of social equality and environmental accountability, and eco-efficiency. Due to their complexity, the interrelations between social responsibility and sustainable development need to be better understood. There is also a real need to showcase successful examples of how public institutions and companies are handling their sustainability challenges. It is against this background that this book has been produced.

Participants will examine the economic, social and political consequences on states and regions, along with their responses. The following questions will be examined: what were the impacts for countries experiencing an energy revolution in shale and gas like the United States and Canada? What were the repercussions of the collapse on other states of the Western hemisphere dependent on oil for growth and development; countries like Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico? Were these outcomes similar to those experiences in other parts of world like Nigeria, Russia and other petro-producing countries? How do developing countries intend to cope with such drastic and sudden exogenous economic shock? Will there be any benefits for energy poor, consumer countries like China, India and European Union member states? Related to these issues are sustainable developmental questions and concerns about the environment. Will cheap oil force other alternative and renewable energy technologies out of the market given lack of competitiveness? Finally, the volume’s chapters will discuss prospects for governance in the new oil environment.

This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing importance of new actors in the global political landscape is envisaged as a phenomenon that has led to shifts in international power relations. This is reflected in development cooperation. Countries like China, Brazil, India and South Africa have enhanced their cooperation programs and present their development cooperation as South-South Development cooperation (SSDC) which takes place between countries of the 'Global South'. Both practitioners and scholars ascribe a notion of solidarity and horizontality to South-South cooperation that allegedly distinguishes it from the relationship patterns commonly associated with North-South relations. However, power constellations between the emerging powers and most of their cooperation partners are often asymmetrical. This book asks whether the claim that South-South cooperation is conducted in a horizontal manner holds in practice in spite of these asymmetries. It revises the concept of South-South cooperation and identifies the central characteristics that are claimed to distinguish the Southern modality from Northern cooperation. It then investigates the relationship between Brazil and Mozambique during the period 2003-2014 to shed some light on the question whether South-South cooperation is different from 'traditional' development cooperation regarding the relations between cooperation partners. Jurek Seifert is a development cooperation expert. He holds a PhD from the University of Duisburg-Essen and has worked on South-South cooperation, development effectiveness and private sector engagement. He has conducted research at the BRICS Policy Center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and works in international development cooperation.
