Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of early Christian creeds contains an up-to-date account of their origin and development from the credal texts in the New Testament to the fully fledged classical formulae of the 4th century. It includes the creeds’ use and alteration in subsequent periods until the time of Charlemagne and the beginnings of the filioque controversy. In addition, the author provides a scholarly commentary on the most common ancient confessions: the Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed. Going beyond previous studies, the book contains chapters dedicated to the use of creeds in law, art, music, everyday life and even magic. Recently discovered source texts, such as a new Ethiopic version of the Roman Creed and a short recension of the Creed of Nicaea-Constantinople, receive extensive treatment. Credal developments in the eastern churches beyond the borders of the Roman Empire complete this comprehensive overview. This volume is intended both as a textbook for advanced students of theology and cognate disciplines and as a reference book on the creeds in a wide range of contexts. All source texts are accompanied by modern English translations. Winner of the Alberigo Award 2024 awarded by the European Academy of Religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wingren claims that in a theologian like Irenaeus there are parts of the Biblical message which are interpreted in greater clarity and power than in any later period of Christian thought. As such, this book deserves the sympathetic attention of theologians both Catholic and Protestant. To summarize it is nearly impossible in view of the richness and fullness of the discussion. We may say, however, that for Irenaeus God made man for growth, yet man was defeated by that Satan whom God also created. The Son of God served to recapitulate and reverse Adam's fall and to restore humanity's lost God-given potentiality for growth. In the Church, through word and sacrament, Christ's benefits are made available to all. In the final consummation, when man becomes like God he is in actual fact becoming man. God and man are not fundamentally in opposition to one another. The only thing to add about Wingren's book is that it must be read. There are very few studies of classical Christian theology which come close to it in clarity, completeness, or convincing power.

Book excerpt: In this book van der Leeuw discusses the horizontal path to God and the vertical paths descending from God and ascending to Him. If God Himself appears, it is in a totally different manner, which results not in intelligible utterance, but in proclamation; and it is with this that theology has to deal." Book excerpt: Every struggle brings great men into prominence, because the slumber ing powers inert in them are aroused to action. The truth of this statement is proved in the Arian struggle and among the many great men the figures of Athanasius in the East, and Hilary, the bishop of Poi tiers, in the West, l rise above their contemporaries. One German scholar called them the 2 two pillars of the Church in the East and the West. Of the two, Hilary is less known, yet well-known by the epithet which the historian K. Hase gave to him, namely "durch Thaten, Leiden und Schriften der Athanasius des Abendlandes. "3 Scholars agree that in words and deeds he did not play such an impor tant part in the history of the Church as Athanasius, although he did occu py an important place among the secondary figures in the Arian dispute, but in "depth of earnestness and massive strength of intellect he is a match in powers of orderly arrangement decidedly for Athanasius himself, and superior. "4 Smulders maintains that in the formation of doctrine his place 5 is certainly near to that of Athanasius and Basil. Another scholar holds 6 the view that as a thinker he surpassed the Alexandrian. Harnack thought that he was "bei aller Abhiingigkeit von Athanasius ein eigenthiimlicher Denker, der den alexandrinischen Bischof als Theologe iibertroffen hat
