Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten-year-old Gertie Larson shares three of her most exciting real-life adventures experienced in her hometown of Richfield, Utah, in the early 1900s. In her first adventure, her disappointment at not having a birthday party is unexpectedly overcome when she, her two sisters, her best friend, and a mentally handicapped youth she befriends are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride Jumbo the elephant in the circus parade! In her second adventure, a little Ute Indian girl, a "What I Have to Be Thankful For" essay contest, and a spooky encounter in an abandoned mine with "the thing," move her story along to the third and final adventure. Gertie's third adventure climaxes her two previous ones and includes a community birthday parade for an unlikely birthday celebrant; Gertie's being the "volunteer" in a demonstration of the pain-relieving properties of a new drug, Novocain; and a surprise wedding. Woven throughout Gertie's adventures are lessons of faith, love, and family unity. How these lessons affect Gertie, her family, and her friends make Gertie's Real-Life Adventures joyful reading.

Book excerpt: Gertie lived a 20th century life full of fun, adventure, derring-do and drama. Read all about her Gilded Age girlhood, explorations on three continents, hijinks on the French Riviera with the Lost Generation, work for the OSS - the original American spy agency - during World War II, and her imprisonment by the Nazis. And that's less than half the story! Gertrude Sanford Legendre was a woman whose adventurous life spanned the twentieth century, beginning in Aiken, S.C. in 1902 and ending at her plantation outside Charleston in 2000. She was a daring and fearless woman whose adventures included being the first American woman in uniform held as a POW by the Germans during World War II. She also partied on the Riviera with the Murphys, the Fitzgeralds and Harpo Marx in the 1920s, undertook numerous challenging expeditions for natural history museums (and lead four) and befriended some of the greatest personalities of the 20th century, including Dr. Albert Schweitzer, General George S. Patton, Lilly Pulitzer, and Bing Crosby. In her later years, she became an ardent conservationist, fighting for habitat preservation on the South Carolina coast and leaving her 7,000-acre plantation in a conservation easement, a place where the beasts can grow old and die. Gertie is a rollicking read about a woman who was not afraid to say yes to life!

Book excerpt: This is the true story of a woman who made headline news in 1958 for welfare fraud, and then was raped by the attorney hired to defend her. Gertie is the true story of an African-American woman navigating the post-slavery era of the early 1900s. This is a portrait of an individual who will not be defined by her second-class citizenship. It is based on the author's recollections of her cousin Gertie, a forthright woman who never lacked for audacious adventure. At the turn of the century with the odds stacked against her as a black woman in a society divided by gender and oppressed by race, Gertie is outspoken and unafraid. To survive, she will use everything at her disposal from her lively wit to her use of hoodoo root workers. Told in traditional oral African-American syntax, this biography reveals Gertie's belief in self-preservation, folk healing, and the improvised solutions fostered by dire poverty. As an independent woman in a country run on racial repression, Gertie will have many encounters with the law. Through her freewheeling life, readers will get to see many folk remedies and country spells that Gertie used to support her friends and fend off her enemies. One of the more humorous episodes comes in a chapter that covers "sugar shit tea." This unique brew leads to binding potions for sex and love that are unbreakable. Bawdy yet moralizing, these types of magical folk encounters crop up throughout the lively book. By today's standards, author Michele A. Phelps Brown admits that, "Gertie is coarse." However, she encourages the reader to view the full social context of Gertie's life as a second class citizen with limited rights. It surveys the various trials in her life and chronicles the many actions she took to weather her one hundred and one years of life. Living amidst her rural Georgia setting, Gertie has little time for the platitudes of progressive reformers. Instead, she exposes the setting and era for what it was. "All freedom did for us was make us pay money to be slaves," says Gertie. Yet she will defy her circumstances to lead a life of integrity.

Book excerpt: An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else. Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.
