Book excerpt: Letters, dated May 13, June 27, and Sept. 14, 1846, from Justin Butterfield, to William H. Swift in Peterboro, N.Y.; and Gerritt Smith, on matters concerning the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Butterfield's letter to Swift, president of the Board of Trustees of the Canal, discusses the Canal Bill (which Butterfield drafted), and the amendments which had been added to it during its passage through the legislature. In particular, Butterfield discusses Section 16 of the original bill, which provides that the bonds held by subscribers to the loan be paid in proportion to the amount subscribed. In the two letters to Gerritt Smith, well-known philanthropist and reformer, Butterfield reports on his success in settling an ejectment case, in which he represented Smith and Messrs. Bronson & Cracken's interest in a lot along the Canal, water lot no. 1 in Kinzie's addition to the town of Chicago. Butterfield asks Smith to send him the $50 he earned for bringing the suit, plus an additional commission of $81.05 for having been successful. His letter of Sept. 14 acknowledges receipt of Smith's check for the full amount of $131.05, although the receipt signed below by John M. Smith for S. Lisle Smith, is for $81.05.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminists from 1848 to the present have rightly viewed the Seneca Falls convention as the birth of the women's rights movement in the United States and beyond. In The Road To Seneca Falls, Judith Wellman offers the first well documented, full-length account of this historic meeting in its contemporary context. The convention succeeded by uniting powerful elements of the antislavery movement, radical Quakers, and the campaign for legal reform under a common cause. Wellman shows that these three strands converged not only in Seneca Falls, but also in the life of women's rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton. It is this convergence, she argues, that foments one of the greatest rebellions of modern times. Rather than working heavy-handedly downward from their official "Declaration of Sentiments," Wellman works upward from richly detailed documentary evidence to construct a complex tapestry of causes that lay behind the convention, bringing the struggle to life. Her approach results in a satisfying combination of social, community, and reform history with individual and collective biographical elements. The Road to Seneca Falls challenges all of us to reflect on what it means to be an American trying to implement the belief that "all men and women are created equal," both then and now. A fascinating story in its own right, it is also a seminal piece of scholarship for anyone interested in history, politics, or gender.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the life of Gerrit Smith, a wealthy land speculator who became well known in the nineteenth century for his philanthropy, his moral reform activity, and his political abolitionism. His speeches, pamphlets, broadsides, and correspondence reveal a complex and conflicted man who sought to live a Christian life in a sinful world. By tracing his religious evolution from orthodox Calvinism to the religion of reason, this study reveals how Smith evolved from a moderate moral reformer who supported benevolent associations and stressed voluntarism to a radical who argued that civil government had the duty to shield the exploited from their oppressors. His political abolitionism confronted the Democratic and Whig Parties by insisting that the original intent of the U.S. Constitution was anti-slavery, challenged William Lloyd Garrison's contention that moral suasion was the only just means to end slavery, and allowed him to argue that the federal government had to abolish slavery before slaves violently revolted against their oppressors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when slavery was spreading and the country was steeped in racism, two white men and two black men overcame social barriers and mistrust to form a unique alliance that sought nothing less than the end of all evil. Drawing on the largest extant bi-racial correspondence in the Civil War era, John Stauffer braids together these men's struggles to reconcile ideals of justice with the reality of slavery and oppression. Who could imagine that Gerrit Smith, one of the richest men in the country, would give away his wealth to the poor and ally himself with Frederick Douglass, an ex-slave? And why would James McCune Smith, the most educated black man in the country, link arms with John Brown, a bankrupt entrepreneur, along with the others? Distinguished by their interracial bonds, they shared a millennialist vision of a new world where everyone was free and equal. As the nation headed toward armed conflict, these men waged their own war by establishing model interracial communities, forming a new political party, and embracing violence. Their revolutionary ethos bridged the divide between the sacred and the profane, black and white, masculine and feminine, and civilization and savagery that had long girded western culture. In so doing, it embraced a malleable and "black-hearted" self that was capable of violent revolt against a slaveholding nation, in order to usher in a kingdom of God on earth. In tracing the rise and fall of their prophetic vision and alliance, Stauffer reveals how radical reform helped propel the nation toward war even as it strove to vanquish slavery and preserve the peace.
