Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germinal The driver was standing with his back to the fire, a little old man, dressed in a purple wool jacket, on his head was an old rabbit-skin cap; while his horse, a large fawn-colored beast, waited motionless as stone, while they emptied the six cars which he had drawn up. This work was done by an assistant, a jolly fellow, red and healthy, who hurried little, pressing upon the lever with a heavy hand. Up there the wind was still more severe, a freezing wind, whose great regular blasts swept on like the blows of a scythe. Book excerpt: A narrative is presented that dwells on the life of miners during the Industrial revolution of France. The book gives the view of the revolution from outside. It explains not only the hideous living conditions of the labourers but also the frustration that lead to the revolution. The book beautifully balances between the individual of society and society itself.

This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers From the Tortugas Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Vol. 1 The chromosomes thus arise inconstantly in different species from any part of the germinal vesicle that contains the chromatin material, and this may be either nucleolus, nuclear reticulum, or both. The function of the germinal spot then appears, in part at least, to be that of a storehouse of material which is to contribute to the formation of the chromosomes. What chromatin is not so employed is resorbed by the cytoplasm, probably return ing to the elements from which it was elaborated and serving as a food mate rial. There appears nothing here to support or confirm the theory of the individuality of the chromosomes, but rather much to arouse suspicion regarding the theory. But one may take refuge in the idea of centers of chromosome activity as suggested by Davis,1 and so the chromatin may perhaps be regarded as merely the garb for the determinants of inheritance, and the characters that arise in their manifold variations as the result of a quantitative as well as a qualitative distribution of chromatin. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferns (Filicales) Treated Comparatively With a View to Their Natural Classification, Vol. 1: Analytical Examination of the Criteria of Comparison Little do ye know your own blessedness; for to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour. R. L. Stevenson, Essay on El Dorado. IN this passage Stevenson enunciates a truth that applies with singular force to those who enter on morphological enquiry. To travel hopefully is the chosen pursuit of all who study large groups of organisms with a view to reducing them to order, so as to throw light on their origin and evolution. In such quests no one need expect under present conditions to arrive at the final destination of complete and assured knowledge. If any one should indulge this hope his disappointment is certain. Even if he did so arrive, and found himself able fully to demonstrate the whole truth, how greatly would the quest lose in its interest. It is in the pursuit of his El Dorado of evolutionary history, not in the arrival there, that the true blessedness of the morphologist lies. It behoves then those who travel on this journey not to hurry unduly, but to consider with critical care the manner of their journeying, rather than to seek short cuts to an elusive goal. Book excerpt: Germinal Life is the sequel to the highly successful Viroid Life. Where Viroid Life provided a compelling reading of Nietzsche's philosophy of the human, Germinal Life is an original and groundbreaking analysis of little known and difficult theoretical aspects of the work of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. In particular, Keith Ansell Pearson provides fresh and insightful readings of Deleuze's work on Bergson and Deleuze's most famous texts Difference and Repetition and A Thousand Plateaus. Germinal Life also provides new insights into Deleuze's relation to some of the most original thinkers of modernity, from Darwin to Freud and Nietzsche, and explores the connections between Deleuze and more recent thinkers such as Adorno and Merleau-Ponty.

Download or read book The Red Thread written by Jacob A. Zumoff and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of 15,000 wool workers who went on strike for more than a year, defying police violence and hunger. The strikers were mainly immigrants and half were women. The Passaic textile strike, the first time that the Communist Party led a mass workers’ struggle in the United States, captured the nation’s imagination and came to symbolize the struggle of workers throughout the country when the labor movement as a whole was in decline during the conservative, pro-business 1920s. Although the strike was defeated, many of the methods and tactics of the Passaic strike presaged the struggles for industrial unions a decade later in the Great Depression.
