Through a series of systemic dives, nautical archaeologist and historian Innes McCartney surveyed and recorded these wrecks, discovering that the distribution and number of wrecks conflicted with the published histories of U-boat losses. Of all the U-boat war losses in the Channel, McCartney found that some 41% were heretofore unaccounted for in the historical literature of World War I and World War II. This book reconciles these inaccuracies with the archaeological record by presenting case studies of a number of dives conducted in the English Channel. Academic geoscientists have been interested in their petrogenesis and their potential value in defining the tectonic setting of the terranes into which they were intruded, and exploration geoscientists have become increasingly interested in the association of these rocks with major epithermal gold and porphyry gold-copper deposits. Despite this current interest, there is no comprehensive textbook that deals with these aspects of potassic igneous rocks. This book redresses this situation by elucidating the characteristic features of potassic (high-K) igneous rocks, erecting a hierarchical scheme that allows interpre tation of their tectonic setting using whole-rock geochemistry, and investigating their associations with a variety of gold and copper-gold deposits, worldwide. About two thirds of the book is based on a PhD thesis by Dr Daniel Muller which was produced at the Key Centre for Strategic Mineral Deposits within the Department of Geology and Geophysics at The University of Western Australia under the supervision of Professor David Groves, the late Dr Nick Rock, Professor Eugen Stumpf!, Dr Wayne Taylor, and Dr Brendon Griffin. The remainder of the book has been compiled from the literature using the collective experience of the two authors. The book is dedi cated to the memory of Dr Rock who initiated the research project but died before its completion.

During the last year of World War II, the once surface-bound diesel-electric U-boat ushered in the age of “total undersea war.” This was due to the introduction of an air mast, or “snorkel” as it became known among the men who served in Doenitz’s submarine fleet. Book excerpt: The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) prepared nearly fifty booklets, or serials, of intelligence gathered during the course of anti-submarine operations throughout multiple theaters in World War Two. The intelligence booklets were prepared from material obtained through the capture or sinking of enemy submarines, interrogations of prisoners, diaries obtained from the dead, and other methods. These booklets were considered confidential and classified and secret at the time of publication in order to safeguard sources. This information has since been declassified. Through extensive research these serials have been unarchived and packaged together for the first time. This book is a compilation of information obtained during the interrogation of survivors from lost enemy submarines by American intelligence, British intelligence, Canadian intelligence, or combination of intelligence services. Some submariners were staunch in the belief that loose lips sink ships. These were the true believers - the ones who fervently believed in Hitler and the Fatherland and the core Nazi principles. Others were not so tight-lipped. These sailors spoke freely - often divulging sensitive information to the interrogators which was used for the Allied war effort.
