Book excerpt: Written in 1844 by German physician Heinrich Hoffmann, Slovenly Peter has entertained generations of readers around the world. Intending to buy a picture book as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son, Hoffmann instead wrote and illustrated his own book. In 1845 he was persuaded by friends to publish the book anonymously. It was one of the first uses of chromolitography - a method of making multi-colored prints - in a children's book. For the third edition, published in 1858, new stories and pictures were added and the title was changed to Struwwelpeter, the name of the character in the first story. As a psychiatrist, Hoffmann dressed the most common childhood disorders and misbehavior in entertaining verses and pictures. Stories in verses with colorful pictures were then - long before Wilhelm Busch and the first comics - still completely new. The little book conquered the world in no time and was parodied, imitated and recast with ever new political and cultural messages more often than any other children's book. This bilingual edition shows Hoffmann's original First German Print of 1845, and the version known today in Mark Twains witty translation. as well as the story of Struwwelpeter's creation told by Hoffmann himself. Among the more than a dozen different English translations, Mark Twain's free rendering is certainly the most original, and he is no doubt the most prominent among the many translators into over 100 languages and dialects.

Book excerpt: This public domain "children's" book was written by German physician Heinrich Hoffmann. Originally published in 1845, it was (re)introduced to the American public in 2006 by a well-known paper salesman and beet farmer. Dr. Hoffmann offers ten well-intentioned parables that warn children of the consequences and dangers of insolence and distasteful behavior -- you might call it the 19th-century version of "scared straight." Struwwelpeter may have been deemed appropriate for children in mid-1800's Germany, but it is definitely not acceptable in today's overly sensitive political climate. The book is genuinely offensive on myriad levels - racial stereotypes, comic book violence, gruesome depictions, and much more! If you are easily offended, lack a sense of humor, or are unable to comprehend that civilization has [mostly] progressed since this book was written, you have been warned! Purchase this book at your own peril and check your "wokeness" at the door. On the other hand, if you can appreciate that times have changed dramatically in 175 years, then enjoy! Struwwelpeter is an interesting and worthwhile examination of the less-than-kind and not-so-gentle approach to child-rearing in 1845 Europe. Just to reiterate ... as warm and fuzzy as it may be to have your thumbs cut off because you suck them, this book is still NOT appropriate for young children. The Media Hatchery edition of this book contains the original artwork and both the English translation and the original German text. The pictures have been meticulously restored, the type reset, and the contents printed on high-quality paper to ensure bright, vivid colors and a clean, modern presentation of a 175-year-old classic.
