Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Steve McKee watched his father die of a heart attack on the couch in their TV room. A lifelong smoker and workaholic, John McKee had been floored by a heart attack five years earlier. The McKee clan-perhaps including a demoralized John himself-had long been waiting for the other shoe to drop. At age fifty-two, Steve McKee learned that he was his father's son more than he had ever hoped-he, too, has serious cardiovascular disease. Haunted by his father's seeming surrender to the condition, McKee set out to find the man who died before the son could know him. In so doing, what might he, Steve McKee, learn of himself? Chronicling the disorienting first days following John McKee's death, My Father's Heart is an extraordinary story of an all-too-ordinary scenario: A father dies, a son remains, and the loss casts a long shadow across a generation. Rich in evocative detail of time, place, and family, it is a powerful memoir of love, forgiveness, and finding oneself.

So many dogs were lost in combat, to starvation, and in the slaughter of German dogs that the country is in dire need of every kind of dog.Dimitri, too, has suspicions of Zasha's existance, and would like nothing more than to add her to his breeding program. He'll have to compete with the armed dog thieves who are also on her trail.Mikhail's inspiring journey to save his best friend, the last German shepherd in Russia, forces him to face some of life's hardest lessons about war, hate, forgiveness, hope, love, and man's best friend.

The author's short stories go from entertaining murderers and gang members to scary dating moments with a potential rapist; only to find love with someone she met 300 years prior. Sharing her work as a psychiatric social worker gives us many real life experiences one can only hope to avoid in one's own life. Yet some situations are encouraging as she helps others survive. The details of her descriptions are amazing as she paints us pictures so vivid we can shut our eyes and see the little gray sausage-like curls and round steel framed glasses on Mrs. Waddell. Whoever wrote a poem about MY ZIT? Different times in history are clearly described from when the little lady of the plantation threw the Yankee soldier over the fence to land in a mud puddle surrounded by snorting pigs. What does one do when facing the jagged glass ends of a broken beer bottle handled by a furious man 6'3" tall? Who ever dared to foster a former heroin pusher? Does anyone in your family vividly remember the details about our perspective of WWII? The author lived in the only city in the U.S. that housed an active army Overseas Replacement Depot. She even remembers the blue cellophane that covered the flashlights of the Air Raid Wardens. This writing covers: humor, adventure, religion, history, law, education, philosophy, psychology, parapsychology, parenting, drama, and much more. Call her crazy: call her eccentric. She lived, loved, DARED, and wrote to tell about it. You will enjoy plenty of laughs! R. Charles Guenther, retired school administrator

Most players were simply local heroes with a local following, but a few teams achieved fame far beyond their region. The Alpine Cowboys—despite being based in Texas's remote, sparsely populated Big Bend country—became a star in the firmament of semi-pro baseball. Lavishly underwritten by a wealthy rancher with a passion not only for baseball but even more for helping young men get a good start in life, the Cowboys played on a "field of dreams" whose facilities rivaled those of professional ballparks. Many Cowboys went on to play in the big leagues, and several pro teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, and St. Louis Browns, came to play exhibition games at Kokernot Field. The story of Herbert Kokernot Jr. and his Alpine Cowboys is a legend among baseball aficionados, but until now it has never been the subject of a book. DJ Stout, son of former Cowboys player Doyle Stout, presents a hall-of-fame-worthy collection of photographs, memorabilia, and reminiscences from Alpine Cowboys players, family members, and fans to capture fifteen years (1946–1961) of baseball at its finest. Nicholas Dawidoff's introduction, originally published in Sports Illustrated, tells the fascinating tale of "Mr. Herbert" and his determination to build a baseball team and ballpark that deserved to carry his ranch's 06 brand. One of the most heartwarming episodes in the annals of the game, The Amazing Tale of Mr. Herbert and His Fabulous Alpine Cowboys is a fitting tribute to a man, a team, and a ballpark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young and impoverished child, author Dr. Robert E. Burke knew his lifes purpose was to become a physician. However, no one could have predicted the tortuous path he would travel in that quest and beyond. In Beyond the Quest to Become a Physician, he provides perspective on his life as he narrates his reflections on the influences that have shaped him throughout the decades. In this memoir, Burke weaves childhood, adolescent, and other personal experiences with the latest information on brain development to provide insight as to how ones experiences influence whom that person becomes. From the moment of ones first breath, ones experiences are unique. He discusses that who one becomes is driven by the interplay of genetics, expression of those genes, and cognitive-socio-economic influences. Beyond the Quest to Become a Physician shares some challenges, knowledge, character changes, distractions, and revelations that Dr. Burke experienced. Therein he provides insight not only to the quest but also to the profession. Through his inspirational and true tales, he helps others to envision how parenting, goal-setting, perseverance, and character create the difference between success and failure.

It is a story of God's great love and grace in one person's life. This is also a story of God's great blessings--of Christian parents who took the time to teach honest values and virtues to their children. It is a story of great love for family, for America, and for friends. The story includes some amazing horses and one incredible dog. It is the story of loss, grief, and of life's lessons learned. Above all, I wrote it in gratitude to the good Lord for allowing me to live out my life in the shadow of His wings.
