Der Hauptzweck der metallurgischen Prozesse ist, aus den Erzen Metalle, Metallegirungen und Metallverbindungen als Hauptprodukte zu gewinnen. Dabei bringt es das Wesen der Huttenprozesse mit sich, dass eine gewisse Menge sich notwendig ergebender Abfallprodukte entsteht. Da die Erze selten einfach zusammengesetzt sind, sondern meist verschiedene nutzbare Korper, wenn auch oft in geringen Mengen enthalten, so sucht man auch diese, so weit es sich lohnt, als Nebenprodukte zu gewinnen. Zur Gewinnung von Nebenprodukten geben ausserdem haufig auch die bei der Verhuttung zugesetzten Stoffe Veranlassung. Ferner wird das Hauptprodukt selten aus dem Erz direkt in einer Operation gewonnen; zumeist bedarf es mehrerer Prozesse, besonders wenn das Erz mehrere Metalle gleichzeitig enthalt, die von einander geschieden werden mussen. Hierbei entstehen Zwischenprodukte, welche gleichsam das Rohmaterial fur jede weitere metallurgische Operation abgeben. Die Anzahl der Zwischenprodukte ist haufig sehr bedeutend und ihre Verarbeitung allein oder mit anderen zusammen oft so verwickelt, dass man formliche Stammbaume aufstellen muss, um einen Uberblick uber den Zusammenhang der verschiedenen Operationen und das Ausscheiden der einzelnen Endprodukte aus dem Prozesse zu gewinnen. Hauptprodukte. Die Hauptprodukte der Huttenprocesse sind in den weitaus meisten Fallen regulinische Metalle. Als Rohmetalle sind sie mit grosseren oder geringeren, oft recht bedeutenden Mengen fremder Metalle, Metalloide oder Metalloxyde verunreinigt, welche durch den Raffinationprozess auf den Stufen der Gare und des Raffinads immer mehr abnehmen, aber selten ganz beseitigt werden. In 1854, in the employ of the Missouri state-geological Survey, he made an examina tion of the lead regions of Southeast Missouri. He has the honor of being the first man to make a scientific investigation and complete te port of the geological conditions of that part of the state. It will no doubt be of interest to our readers to know that Dr. Litton was at one time a member. Of the Faculty in Missouri State University, being a Professor of Chemistry here in 1849. This event awakened in him an interest in the institution which he retained until the end of his life, leading him to present to it in 1887 his large and valuable scientific library, consisting of some fifteen hundred to two thousand volumes, many of which are very rare and expensive. These works comprise some of the best writings of English, French, and German scientists. The gift was not only valuable in itself, but has been the means of establishing a scientific library which, if properly cared for, will be of inestimable value at some not far distant date. He also contributed recently to the different laboratories of the Uni versity several thousand dollars worth of physical apparatus.
