Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germ cell tumors are relatively rare compared with other malignancies, and compilations of knowledge that encompass the entire spectrum of the disease are lacking. This textbook, written by the foremost authorities in the field, rectifies the situation by discussing in depth a broad range of topics, including biology, epidemiology, pathology, treatment, and late effects. Bearing in mind that germ cell tumors are most prevalent in the adolescent and young adult age group, causes of disease and treatment approaches in pediatric and adult patients are compared and contrasted. By spanning the entire life course, from prenatal origins of disease through to treatment in adults and late effects of treatment, the editors have produced a book that will be of interest to both pediatric and adult oncologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intracranial germ cell tumors are a group of uncommon neoplasms of the central nervous system. The clinical features and natural history of these lesions are quite unique and variable. While intracranial germ cell tumors have been a fascination to neurooncologists for decades, the relatively small number of patients seen in any single institution has hampered the important clinical investigation that is so needed. This text is complete with detailed information concerning the epidemiology, pathology, oncological biology, clinical findings, radiology, and treatment options including surgical strategy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy for this heterogeneous group of neoplasms. The ongoing clinical trials concerning the optimization of therapy are efficiently summarized. An important final segment addresses the late sequelae of therapy which is of great significance since the majority suffering from these tumors are young patients. This first and only book on intracranial germ cell tumors includes excellent and comprehensive data sheets, illustrations, and radiograms. It provides a detailed and outstanding reference source for physicians taking care of patients with intracranial germ cell tumors, and will be a very welcome edition to their reference libraries.

Book excerpt: Crafted as a descriptive and visual text, Germ Cell Tumors features definitive reviews of the biology, diagnosis, and management of germ cell tumors. Incorporating extensive illustrations and tables, this book reviews the progress that has been made in the curative therapy of germ cell tumors over the past 25 years, progress that has lead to the positioning of germ cell tumor therapy as the paradigm of curative treatment in adult solid tumors. Most of the work has been produced on a multi-disciplinary basis, emphasizing the use of different diagnostic, laboratory, imaging, and management tools. In addition to a scientific and clinical review, a series of detailed discussions on the psychosocial issues, patient support, and management of the occasional problem cases that do not result in cure are featured. Germ Cell Tumors has been carefully illustrated with new photographs that illustrate diagnostic approaches, surgical techniques, and management complications. Extensive graphs and tables illustrate the results of treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents, in a stepwise and interactive fashion, approximately 75 cases that reflect the wide spectrum of pathology encountered in this region. Each case description commences with a concise clinical scenario. High-quality radiologic, laboratory, and histopathologic images depicting the differentiating features of the lesion subtype in question are then presented, and key operative and clinical management pearls are briefly reviewed. The interdisciplinary nature of this easy-to-use color atlas and textbook reflects the fact that the management of patients with sellar and parasellar lesions is itself often interdisciplinary. The format is unique in that no similar interdisciplinary book is available on lesions of this region of the brain. Atlas of Sellar and Parasellar Lesions: Clinical, Imaging, and Pathologic Correlations is of great value for practitioners and trainees in a range of medical specialties, including radiology, neurology, endocriniology, pathology, oncology, radiation oncology, and neurosurgery.

This book will equip readers with the knowledge required to set up practices to deliver quality brain and spinal radiation therapy appropriate to each patient. It will be of benefit to radiation oncologists, clinical oncologists, medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and senior nurses as well as medical oncologists and surgical oncologists with an interest in radiotherapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the oldest problems in developmental biology is the differentiation between germ line and somatic cells. The continuity of germ line cells between subsequent generations of multicellular organisms was first suggested by Owen, and later elaborated by A. Weismann to his famous germ line theory. His additional assumption that cellular differentiation was based on a differential representation of the genetic material in somatic cells was soon disproved. In some, apparently exceptional, cases, however, such differences in the genetic material between germ line and somatic cells were discovered. The best-known example is the nematod Ascaris. Boveri discovered and studied the fundamental differences in the karyotypes of germ line and soma of Parascaris equorum. Later, similar situations were found in some other organisms. However, in particular the work ofSpemann demonstrated that cellular differentiation in general is not accompanied by fundamental changes of the genetic material. Subsequently, the relatively few examples of germ line-soma differences achieved by chromatin elimination processes have been considered as a curiosity. Experimental studies have been essentially restricted to Ascaris species and to the pioneering cytological studies of chromatin elimination by S. Beermann. Despite the large proportions of the genome involved in chromatin elimina tion, our knowledge of this process is still very restricted. In particular the biological meaning of this differentiation process is entirely obscure. In this context one must, however, consider that also for the majority of DNA sequences in eukaryotic genomes the biological relevance is unclear.
