Although destined from birth to take over his father's legal practice, fate took our subject on a more physical path through bodily fitness and a wish to involve everyone in the sport of volleyball as sports centres opened up in North Wales in the nineteen seventies. This autobiography tells of a love of motor cycles and cars not always in agreement with the constabulary. Although born with an ear for music he never attained a high standard with any instrument, but believed he could get a tune from most instruments. Not without girl friends in his twenties the first marriage lasted thirty months, but his second has exceeded thirty years. The book tells of a physical fitness instructor in his spare time becoming a volleyball club coach and referee. Sitting on various committees he endeavoured to form volleyball clubs in North Wales, culminating in the foundation of the Welsh Volleyball Association by merging with Southern players. Humorous moments are described throughout daily life in factory and office surroundings. This is a unique story told by a person who is not normally a writer, but has an interesting tale to tell of his journey through life. This study addresses these questions, identifying and discussing the various forms of winter wassailing found in Wales in times past and present. It focuses specifically on the Welsh poetry written over the centuries at the celebration of several rituals – most particularly at Christmas, the turn of the year, and on Twelfth Night – which served a distinct purpose. The winter wassailing aspired to improve the quality of the earth’s fertility in three specific spheres: the productivity of the land, the animal kingdom, and the human race. This volume provides a rich collection of Welsh songs in their original language, translated into English for the first time, and with musical notation. It also provides a comprehensive analysis of these poems and of the society in which they were sung.

Along with analysing aspects of theology and doctrine, the narrative assesses the contribution of such key personalities as William Williams Pantycelyn, Thomas Charles of Bala andThomas Jones of Denbigh, and the Nonconformists Titus Lewis, Joseph Harris ‘Gomer’, George Lewis, David Rees and Gwilym Hiraethog. Following the notorious ‘Treachery of the Blue Books’ of 1847 and the Religious Census of 1851, Anglicanism regained ground, and among the themes treated in the latter chapters are the influence of High Church Tractarianism and the Broad Church ‘Lampeter Theology’ in the parishes. The volume concludes by assessing the intellectual culture of evangelicalism personified by Lewis Edwards and Thomas Charles Edwards, and describes the challenges of Darwinism, philosophical Idealism and a more critical attitude to the biblical text.
