Book excerpt: The optimal management of a hot water geothermal reservoir was considered. The physical system investigated includes a three-dimensional aquifer from which hot water is pumped and circulated through a heat exchanger. Heat removed from the geothermal fluid is transferred to a building complex or other facility for space heating. After passing through the heat exchanger, the (now cooled) geothermal fluid is reinjected into the aquifer. This cools the reservoir at a rate predicted by an expression relating pumping rate, time, and production hole temperature. The economic model proposed in the study maximizes discounted value of energy transferred across the heat exchanger minus the discounted cost of wells, equipment, and pumping energy. The real value of energy is assumed to increase at r percent per year. A major decision variable is the production or pumping rate (which is constant over the project life). Other decision variables in this optimization are production timing, reinjection temperature, and the economic life of the reservoir at the selected pumping rate. Results show that waiting time to production and production life increases as r increases and decreases as the discount rate increases. Production rate decreases as r increases and increases as the discount rate increases. The optimal injection temperature is very close to the temperature of the steam produced on the other side of the heat exchanger, and is virtually independent of r and the discount rate. Sensitivity of the decision variables to geohydrological parameters was also investigated. Initial aquifer temperature and permeability have a major influence on these variables, although aquifer porosity is of less importance. A penalty was considered for production delay after the lease is granted.

Book excerpt: In a presentation to the First Stanford Geothermal Workshop last year, we outlined the basic philosophy, assumptions and general approach to finding an optimal rate of energy extraction from a hot water geothermal field. In this paper, we present the explicit relationships governing the physical processes and economic factors of our model, as well as the modifications to the model that have been necessary to accommodate the more specific articulation of these relationships. The conceptual modifications of the earlier model are subtle, but of great importance in making our work more useful for geothermal resource management. We adopt the hydro-thermal model developed by Gringarten and Sauty, and assume that the value of geothermal energy is known as a function of time and the quantity of extracted energy. We note however that our optimization model can be modified to accommodate other hydrothermal models such as that of Kasameyer and Schroeder, which combines fractured and porous media flow. In view of the increase in the attractiveness of geothermal energy for space heating, we also assume that the extracted energy is used for generation of steam to be used for this purpose. However, we are well aware that the hot brine, depending on the parameters of a particular field, may be more economically utilized for some other purpose (e.g., electric power generation, direct utilization of hot water for domestic and industrial use, mineral extraction and desalinization). In this paper, we restrict our attention to the case where the decision has already been made to use the geothermal energy for space heating. Further proposed work is described at the end of the paper. 2 figs., 6 refs.

Yet uptake of geothermal still lags behind that of solar and wind, principally because of (i) uncertainties over resource availability in poorly-explored reservoirs and (ii) the concentration of full-lifetime costs into early-stage capital expenditure (capex). Recent advances in reservoir characterization techniques are beginning to narrow the bounds of exploration uncertainty, both by improving estimates of reservoir geometry and properties, and by providing pre-drilling estimates of temperature at depth. Advances in drilling technologies and management have potential to significantly lower initial capex, while operating expenditure is being further reduced by more effective reservoir management -- supported by robust mathematical models -- and increasingly efficient energy conversion systems (flash, binary and combined-heat-and-power). Advances in characterization and modelling are also improving management of shallow low-enthalpy resources that can only be exploited using heat-pump technology.
