This is one of the MOST comprehensive and authoritative published records of Georgia Revolutionary War soldiers. This book is a MUST for those researchers doing work in Georgia during the Revolutionary time period. It should be a companion volume to: A Researcher's Library of Georgia History, Genealogy, and Records, Volume #1 and Georgia Citizen and Soldiers of the American Revolution. Even though Georgia did not furnish a large body of troops to the Revolutionary struggle, it did acquire a vast number of veterans filing for Bounty Land Grants from other states. The reason for this is that it was the youngest of the English colonies with vast amounts of land but a scant population, located on the remote southern frontier. These bounty grants were issued after the war as payment for service rendered and to promote settlement in this the youngest of the colonies.

This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mrs. McCall's roster of Georgia soldiers in the Revolution was compiled over many years. The work as a whole is cumulative, with only slight, albeit significant, differences in the kinds of information which may be found in one volume versus another. This volume (Volume II) contains records of officers and soldiers not only from Georgia but from other states, many of whose descendants later came to Georgia because of liberal land grants. The Appendix contains miscellaneous records and documents of the families of some Revolutionary soldiers and officers. Clearfield Company also publishes Volumes I and III. Volume I coontains the records of hundreds of Revolutionary War soldiers and officers of Georgia, with genealogies of their families, and lists of soldiers buried in Georgia whose graves have been located. Volume III, the longest of the work, is similar in scope to this volume except that the majority of the entries are for Georgia officers and soldiers, with only some material relating to other states. The three volumes, each of which is indexed, refer to as many as 20,000 persons overall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A well-organized and concise introduction to the war’s major battles” (The Journal of America’s Military Past). Winner of the Gold Star Book Award for History from the Military Writers Society of America This is the first comprehensive account of every engagement of the Revolution, a war that began with a brief skirmish at Lexington Green on April 19, 1775, and concluded on the battlefield at the Siege of Yorktown in October 1781. In between were six long years of bitter fighting on land and at sea. The wide variety of combats blanketed the North American continent from Canada to the Southern colonies, from the winding coastal lowlands to the Appalachian Mountains, and from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean. Every entry begins with introductory details including the date of the battle, its location, commanders, opposing forces, terrain, weather, and time of day. The detailed body of each entry offers both a Colonial and a British perspective of the unfolding military situation, a detailed and unbiased account of what actually transpired, a discussion of numbers and losses, an assessment of the consequences of the battle, and suggestions for further reading. Many of the entries are supported and enriched by original maps and photos.

Book excerpt: This is a basic list of the colonial soldiers of Virginia known to have been engaged in active service, including names of those who participated in the French and Indian War, the Indian Wars, Lord Dunmore's War, and various engagements and campaigns prior to the Revolution. The list was drawn from company rolls, bounty applications, the Washington Papers in the Library of Congress, Hening's Statutes at Large, and Journals of the House of Burgesses, and it is believed to represent a large proportion of the entire Virginia militia, particularly after the year 1754, when muster rolls were more carefully kept. It is believed that few members of the Virginia regiment under George Washington are unaccounted for. In all some 6,700 soldiers are identified in this work, each with references to the exact source of information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrifying story of the turbulent year when the sixties ended and America teetered on the edge of revolution NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH As the 1960s drew to a close, the United States was coming apart at the seams. From August 1969 to August 1970, the nation witnessed nine thousand protests and eighty-four acts of arson or bombings at schools across the country. It was the year of the My Lai massacre investigation, the Cambodia invasion, Woodstock, and the Moratorium to End the War. The American death toll in Vietnam was approaching fifty thousand, and the ascendant counterculture was challenging nearly every aspect of American society. Witness to the Revolution, Clara Bingham’s unique oral history of that tumultuous time, unveils anew that moment when America careened to the brink of a civil war at home, as it fought a long, futile war abroad. Woven together from one hundred original interviews, Witness to the Revolution provides a firsthand narrative of that period of upheaval in the words of those closest to the action—the activists, organizers, radicals, and resisters who manned the barricades of what Students for a Democratic Society leader Tom Hayden called “the Great Refusal.” We meet Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn of the Weather Underground; Daniel Ellsberg, the former Defense Department employee who released the Pentagon Papers; feminist theorist Robin Morgan; actor and activist Jane Fonda; and many others whose powerful personal stories capture the essence of an era. We witness how the killing of four students at Kent State turned a straitlaced social worker into a hippie, how the civil rights movement gave birth to the women’s movement, and how opposition to the war in Vietnam turned college students into prisoners, veterans into peace marchers, and intellectuals into bombers. With lessons that can be applied to our time, Witness to the Revolution is more than just a record of the death throes of the Age of Aquarius. Today, when America is once again enmeshed in racial turmoil, extended wars overseas, and distrust of the government, the insights contained in this book are more relevant than ever. Praise for Witness to the Revolution “Especially for younger generations who didn’t live through it, Witness to the Revolution is a valuable and entertaining primer on a moment in American history the likes of which we may never see again.”—Bryan Burrough, The Wall Street Journal “A rich tapestry of a volatile period in American history.”—Time “A gripping oral history of the centrifugal social forces tearing America apart at the end of the ’60s . . . This is rousing reportage from the front lines of US history.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “The familiar voices and the unfamiliar ones are woven together with documents to make this a surprisingly powerful and moving book.”—New York Times Book Review “[An] Enthralling and brilliant chronology of the period between August 1969 and September 1970.”—Buffalo News “[Bingham] captures the essence of these fourteen months through the words of movement organizers, vets, students, draft resisters, journalists, musicians, government agents, writers, and others. . . . This oral history will enable readers to see that era in a new light and with fresh sympathy for the motivations of those involved. While Bingham’s is one of many retrospective looks at that period, it is one of the most immediate and personal.”—Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of America's first European settlers felt they were traveling to a sort of promised land, but James Oglethorpe viewed America--specifically, what is today the state of Georgia--as his own personal utopia. Convincing his king to grant him a land parcel, Oglethorpe threw his lot in with 35 poor families and traveled to the New World. There, he became the first administrator of the Georgian colony and founded the town of Savannah. This work tells the story of James Oglethorpe and of Georgia from its birth as a colony in 1733 to its emergence as a free state 50 years later. Appendices include the roster of initial settlers, the Georgia constitution of 1777 and a detailed timeline.

Book excerpt: There are many books of many kinds and this volume properly classified would probably belong to the "sui generis," "sic trasit gloria mundi" variety. If the reader has grown a little rusty on classic Latin I do not mind saying to him further that the latter phrase has been sometimes translated, "My glorious old aunt has been sick ever since Monday," but I do not think that this revised version has been generally accepted as strictly orthodox. This book cannot be said to have been written without rhyme or reason for its pages hold more rhyme than poetry and three reasons at least, have conspired to give it literary existence. A hundred years and more from now it may be that some far descendant of the author, while fingering the musty shelves of some old library, may find some modest satisfaction in the thought that his ancient sire had "writ" a book.
