Download or read book Harry B. Smith written by John Franceschina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry B. Smith was the most prolific writer of librettos for the American musical theatre in history, with nearly half of his 300 works actually opening in New York City. In addition, Smith was instrumental in adapting and popularizing foreign musicals in America, significantly influencing writing and composing styles of American shows. He worked with every major composer in America between 1880 and 1920, and consequently this examination of his work and process is highly instructive of the history of the American musical.

Book excerpt: My body starts heaving. Exhaustion encases everything I do, even washing the kids' cereal bowls. It feels as though layers of thick gauze have wrapped themselves around the faces of my three children. A hardened grayness taking over the spaces between everything. Sealing the tissue between my ribs. Filling in the distance between the kitchen window and the soccer ball in the backyard. One doctor thinks I am still caught in the fist of the mononucleosis I contracted in college; another tells me that giving birth to three children is enough to swell anyone's glands and break open these rivers of mucous. Infection after infection keeps me from my kids' tennis matches and class trips to Canyonlands in Utah. The fatigue gathers in my chest, leaving my arms heavy and my fingers numb. Daily headaches send me back to bed after breakfast. The words "chronic illness" move into my house, wandering the rooms, trying to steal parts of my body. My thin, bare feet slide down the hall to wake up the children for school. I have no idea what is happening.

Book excerpt: Second Chances sets the isolation of western Australian against the hubbub of London, telling the intertwined stories of a group of colourful characters at various stages in their lives. Alan and Sylvia share a relationship of convenience. When Sylvia travels to London to attend a funeral, they both find themselves caught up in circumstances that force them to re-consider where their lives are heading. Alan’s brother Ben and his spoiled wife Suzanne struggle to find common ground as they try to raise three indulged children, run a successful business, and maintain an affluent lifestyle. Pulled in opposite directions by unwise choices, they find their family’s emotional security under threat. For both couples, mistakes of the past collide with hope for the future. Errors of judgment must be tackled head on. They say everyone deserves a second chance, but it takes willingness to recognise the opportunity when it comes knocking and courage to open the door.
