Book excerpt: In today's euphoric bull market, everyone wants in. For millions of investors, however, even US$8 trades with Ameritrade cut too deeply into their pockets - and profits. But, there is a solution. Of the more than 45 million Americans who own stocks, more than 5 million are enrolled in dividend reinvestment programmes or direct stock purchase plans (leaving a large markt for new DRIP investors). These investors have defied conventional wisdom, showing that it doesn't take hundreds or thousands of dollars to launch a successful investing plan.
Book Synopsis Plea Bargaining’s Triumph by : George Fisher
Download or read book Plea Bargaining’s Triumph written by George Fisher and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though originally an interloper in a system of justice mediated by courtroom battles, plea bargaining now dominates American criminal justice. This book traces the evolution of plea bargaining from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century to its present pervasive role. Through the first three quarters of the nineteenth century, judges showed far less enthusiasm for plea bargaining than did prosecutors. After all, plea bargaining did not assure judges “victory”; judges did not suffer under the workload that prosecutors faced; and judges had principled objections to dickering for justice and to sharing sentencing authority with prosecutors. The revolution in tort law, however, brought on a flood of complex civil cases, which persuaded judges of the wisdom of efficient settlement of criminal cases. Having secured the patronage of both prosecutors and judges, plea bargaining quickly grew to be the dominant institution of American criminal procedure. Indeed, it is difficult to name a single innovation in criminal procedure during the last 150 years that has been incompatible with plea bargaining’s progress and survived.

Book Synopsis Washington's Crossing by : David Hackett Fischer
Download or read book Washington's Crossing written by David Hackett Fischer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six months after the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution was all but lost. A powerful British force had routed the Americans at New York, occupied three colonies, and advanced within sight of Philadelphia. Yet, as David Hackett Fischer recounts in this riveting history, George Washington--and many other Americans--refused to let the Revolution die. On Christmas night, as a howling nor'easter struck the Delaware Valley, he led his men across the river and attacked the exhausted Hessian garrison at Trenton, killing or capturing nearly a thousand men. A second battle of Trenton followed within days. The Americans held off a counterattack by Lord Cornwallis's best troops, then were almost trapped by the British force. Under cover of night, Washington's men stole behind the enemy and struck them again, defeating a brigade at Princeton. The British were badly shaken. In twelve weeks of winter fighting, their army suffered severe damage, their hold on New Jersey was broken, and their strategy was ruined. Fischer's richly textured narrative reveals the crucial role of contingency in these events. We see how the campaign unfolded in a sequence of difficult choices by many actors, from generals to civilians, on both sides. While British and German forces remained rigid and hierarchical, Americans evolved an open and flexible system that was fundamental to their success. The startling success of Washington and his compatriots not only saved the faltering American Revolution, but helped to give it new meaning.

Book excerpt: "Inspired by problems that spring from real life, this casebook presents the intricacies of evidentiary law in a way that law students will find both intellectually compelling and enjoyable. Many of the problems are based on facts taken from cases or news articles, complete with citations, and this fact-based approach piques student interest. This fact-based approach piques student interest, causing them to ask, "How would a good lawyer attack this problem?" rather than "What is the professor driving at?" Based on the belief that students typically prefer to look at the courtroom through the criminal law lens, the casebook emphasizes the criminal context, while using civil cases when illustrating rules that apply mainly in the civil context."--Publisher's Website.

Book Synopsis Wonder, the Rainbow, and the Aesthetics of Rare Experiences by : Philip Fisher
Download or read book Wonder, the Rainbow, and the Aesthetics of Rare Experiences written by Philip Fisher and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why pause and study this particular painting among so many others ranged on a gallery wall? Wonder, which Descartes called the first of the passions, is at play; it couples surprise with a wish to know more, the pleasurable promise that what is novel or rare may become familiar. This is a book about the aesthetics of wonder, about wonder as it figures in our relation to the visual world and to rare or new experiences. In three instructive instances--a pair of paintings by Cy Twombly, the famous problem of doubling the area of a square, and the history of attempts to explain rainbows--Philip Fisher examines the experience of wonder as it draws together pleasure, thinking, and the aesthetic features of thought. Through these examples he places wonder in relation to the ordinary and the everyday as well as to its opposite, fear. The remarkable story of how rainbows came to be explained, fraught with errors, half-knowledge, and incomplete understanding, suggests that certain knowledge cannot be what we expect when wonder engages us. Instead, Fisher argues, a detailed familiarity, similar to knowing our way around a building or a painting, is the ultimate meeting point for aesthetic and scientific encounters with novelty, rare experiences, and the genuinely new.
Book Synopsis Wall Street Women by : Melissa S. Fisher
Download or read book Wall Street Women written by Melissa S. Fisher and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall Street Women tells the story of the first generation of women to establish themselves as professionals on Wall Street. Since these women, who began their careers in the 1960s, faced blatant discrimination and barriers to advancement, they created formal and informal associations to bolster one another's careers. In this important historical ethnography, Melissa S. Fisher draws on fieldwork, archival research, and extensive interviews with a very successful cohort of first-generation Wall Street women. She describes their professional and political associations, most notably the Financial Women's Association of New York City and the Women's Campaign Fund, a bipartisan group formed to promote the election of pro-choice women. Fisher charts the evolution of the women's careers, the growth of their political and economic clout, changes in their perspectives and the cultural climate on Wall Street, and their experiences of the 2008 financial collapse. While most of the pioneering subjects of Wall Street Women did not participate in the women's movement as it was happening in the 1960s and 1970s, Fisher argues that they did produce a "market feminism" which aligned liberal feminist ideals about meritocracy and gender equity with the logic of the market.
