Book Synopsis Introduction to Geopolitics by : Colin Flint
Download or read book Introduction to Geopolitics written by Colin Flint and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clear and concise introductory textbook guides students through their first engagement with geopolitics. It offers a clear framework for understanding contemporary conflicts by showing how geography provides opportunities and limits upon the actions of countries, national groups, and terrorist organizations. This second edition is fundamentally restructured to emphasize geopolitical agency, and non-state actors. The text is fully revised, containing a brand new chapter on environmental geopolitics, which includes discussion of climate change and resource conflicts. The text contains updated case studies, such as the Korean conflict, Israel-Palestine and Chechnya and Kashmir, to emphasize the multi-faceted nature of conflict. These, along with guided exercises, help explain contemporary global power struggles, environmental geopolitics, the global military actions of the United States, the persistence of nationalist conflicts, the changing role of borders, and the new geopolitics of terrorism, and peace movements. Throughout, the readers are introduced to different theoretical perspectives, including feminist contributions, as both the practice and representation of geopolitics are discussed. Introduction to Geopolitics is an ideal introductory text which provides a deeper and critical understanding of current affairs, geopolitical structures and agents. The text is extensively illustrated with diagrams, maps, photographs and end of chapter further reading. Both students and general readers alike will find this book an essential stepping-stone to understanding contemporary conflicts.
Book Synopsis The Contribution of Spain and Cuba to American Independence by : Eduardo J Tejera
Download or read book The Contribution of Spain and Cuba to American Independence written by Eduardo J Tejera and published by XinXii. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the contribution of Spain and Cuba to the American War of Independence continues to be largely ignored by the Americans and the world in general, including Spaniards and Latin Americans. This new presentation of my previous work includes three additional chapters with new data and information to make it more up to date in that it will show a more complete overview of the contribution of Spain, Cuba and other Spanish Colonies to the American Revolution. I will also comment on the international forces that influenced this colonial conflict that had worldwide implications. The main purpose of this book is to give greater recognition to the enormous contribution that Spain gave right from the beginning in 1776 to the revolutionary cause. King Carlos III himself was direcdtly involved in this effort, plus his Ministers Grimaldi, Floridablanca, Galvez and the enthusiastic and dynamic Count of Arana as ambassador of the Crown in Paris. Spain’s contribution has been largely forgotten, but as we shall see, it was indeed crucial to the revolutionary cause. Likewise, contributions were also received from Louisiana, Mexico and particularly from Havana, often under orders from the court at Madrid but also on the initiative of the citizens of Havana, creoles as well as Spaniards.

Book Synopsis The Grand Chessboard by : Zbigniew Brzezinski
Download or read book The Grand Chessboard written by Zbigniew Brzezinski and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and eminent foreign policy scholar Zbigniew Brzezinski's classic book on American's strategic mission in the modern world. In The Grand Chessboard, renowned geostrategist Zbigniew Brzezinski delivers a brutally honest and provocative vision for American preeminence in the twenty-first century. The task facing the United States, he argues, is to become the sole political arbiter in Eurasian lands and to prevent the emergence of any rival power threatening our material and diplomatic interests. The Eurasian landmass, home to the greatest part of the globe's population, natural resources, and economic activity, is the "grand chessboard" on which America's supremacy will be ratified and challenged in the years to come. In this landmark work of public policy and political science, Brzezinski outlines a groundbreaking and powerful blueprint for America's vital interests in the modern world. In this revised edition, Brzezinski addresses recent global developments including the war in Ukraine, the re-emergence of Russia, and the rise of China.

Download or read book Haitian-Dominican Counterpoint written by E. Matibag and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would the island of Hispaniola look like if viewed as a loosely connected system? That is the question Haitian-Dominican Counterpointseeks to answer as it surveys the insular space shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic throughout their parallel histories. For beneath the familiar tale of hostilities, the systemic perspective reveals a lesser-known, "unitarian" narrative of interdependencies and reciprocal influences shaping each country'sidentity. In view of the sociocultural and economic linkages connecting the two countries, their relations would have to resemble not so much acockfight (the conventional metaphor) as a serial and polyrhythmic counterpoint.

Book excerpt: A Financial Times Best Book of the Year Shortlisted for the Lionel Gelber Prize There has always been some gap between rich and poor in this country, but recently what it means to be rich has changed dramatically. Forget the 1 percent—Plutocrats proves that it is the wealthiest 0.1 percent who are outpacing the rest of us at breakneck speed. Most of these new fortunes are not inherited, amassed instead by perceptive businesspeople who see themselves as deserving victors in a cutthroat international competition. With empathy and intelligence, Plutocrats reveals the consequences of concentrating the world’s wealth into fewer and fewer hands. Propelled by fascinating original interviews with the plutocrats themselves, Plutocrats is a tour de force of social and economic history, the definitive examination of inequality in our time.
