Download or read book Algebra and Geometry written by Hongxi Wu and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes that, together, give an exposition of the mathematics of grades 9â12 that is simultaneously mathematically correct and grade-level appropriate. The volumes are consistent with CCSSM (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics) and aim at presenting the mathematics of Kâ12 as a totally transparent subject. The first part of this volume is devoted to the study of standard algebra topics: quadratic functions, graphs of equations of degree 2 in two variables, polynomials, exponentials and logarithms, complex numbers and the fundamental theorem of algebra, and the binomial theorem. Having translations and the concept of similarity at our disposal enables us to clarify the study of quadratic functions by concentrating on their graphs, the same way the study of linear functions is greatly clarified by knowing that their graphs are lines. We also introduce the concept of formal algebra in the study of polynomials with complex coefficients. The last three chapters in this volume complete the systematic exposition of high school geometry that is consistent with CCSSM. These chapters treat the geometry of the triangle and the circle, ruler and compass constructions, and a general discussion of axiomatic systems, including non-Euclidean geometry and the celebrated work of Hilbert on the foundations. This book should be useful for current and future teachers of Kâ12 mathematics, as well as for some high school students and for education professionals.
Download or read book Surprise Party! written by Erin Earle and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shapes are everywhere; math students get a chance to explore shapes and their attributes, all while having fun. Familiar storylines and relatable contexts help students practice various principles of geometry, such as composing two-dimensional shapes, decomposing and partitioning shapes, and distinguishing between defining and non-defining attributes. Bright visuals reinforce the essential math concepts that every geometry student must master. A surprise party becomes an opportunity to teach about shapes and their defining and non-defining attributes in this engaging text. This volume satisfies CCSS Math Standard 1.G.A.1. This book should be paired with "Jackson's Surprise Party" (9781477722046) from the InfoMax Math Readers Program to provide the alternative point of view on the same topic.
Book Synopsis Can You Find It? by : Christine Schumer
Download or read book Can You Find It? written by Christine Schumer and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shapes are generally our first encounter with math. Geometry skills are learned from an early age, and readers build upon those first geometry lessons with topics like describing objects using the names of shapes, identifying both two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, and composing shapes. Readers are able to explore these essential concepts independently through easy-to-follow text and colorful images of both new and familiar shapes. Students learn to use the names of shapes to describe the relative position of an object in an accessible context. This book reflects standard K.G.A.1 of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. This book should be paired with "Where Is It?" (9781477719374) from the InfoMax Math Readers Program to provide the alternative point of view on the same topic.
Book Synopsis Euclidean Geometry by : David M. Clark
Download or read book Euclidean Geometry written by David M. Clark and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry has been an essential element in the study of mathematics since antiquity. Traditionally, we have also learned formal reasoning by studying Euclidean geometry. In this book, David Clark develops a modern axiomatic approach to this ancient subject, both in content and presentation. Mathematically, Clark has chosen a new set of axioms that draw on a modern understanding of set theory and logic, the real number continuum and measure theory, none of which were available in Euclid's time. The result is a development of the standard content of Euclidean geometry with the mathematical precision of Hilbert's foundations of geometry. In particular, the book covers all the topics listed in the Common Core State Standards for high school synthetic geometry. The presentation uses a guided inquiry, active learning pedagogy. Students benefit from the axiomatic development because they themselves solve the problems and prove the theorems with the instructor serving as a guide and mentor. Students are thereby empowered with the knowledge that they can solve problems on their own without reference to authority. This book, written for an undergraduate axiomatic geometry course, is particularly well suited for future secondary school teachers. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.
