Download or read book Geology of Colorado and Western Ore Deposits (Classic Reprint) written by Arthur Lakes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Colorado and Western Ore Deposits This treatise contains the substance of a series of elementary lectures delivered by the author to the students of the Colorado State School of Mines. It is published with a view of meeting some of the needs of the general public, of the ordinary miner, and of the unscientific many, rather than with an idea of offering technical matter for the discussion of the scientific few. The materials are derived from the writer's own researches, and from the most reliable resources available to him, such as the standard text-books and the valuable published reports of the United States Geological Survey. The writer having for a time been connected with that survey, knows full well how high a value is to be attached to those reports, which must remain for all time as a standard of reference for those interested in the geological relations of the mines of Colorado and Western States. The first part of the work contains a rough sketch of general Geology, for the benefit of those who are not familiar with the terms used in this science. The sketch is further applied to the local geology of Colorado. The second part refers to the phenomena of veins and ores, and their surroundings, as illustrated by Colorado. It is published with a view of meeting some of the needs of the general public, of the ordinary miner, and of the unscientific many, rather than with any idea of offer ing original matter for the discussion of the scientific few. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Western Ore Deposits This second edition is the result partly of the success of the first, but mainly of a desire felt by the author to bring his subject up to date. It is now over ten years since the earlier edition was written, and the science of geology, the development of mines and the rapid discoveries of new regions have advanced at such a pace that what then appeared as new is now commonplace. An example is the discovery and development of Cripple Creek, a district then in its infancy, receiving but scant attention in the original work. The same has been the case with many other mining camps, in Colorado and elsewhere. It has been the writers object to illustrate the principles of mining geology rather than to dilate on any particular rich or noted mine. If a small mine illustrates some important geological or other interesting feature in the science of mining, attention is given to that mine rather than to its more noted neighbor. Preference is given to Colorados mines because the writer ds more familiar with them, and they well illustrate the leading principles. Those outside of Colorado are selected and described as enlarging on principles previously discussed. The first part of the book relates to general features of mining geology. This is followed by illustrations of these, drawn from Colorado mining camps, and by a further illustration and confirmation of them from some of the noted mining camps of the Western States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Ore Deposits The original source of all ore deposits lay in the primitive igneous crust of the earth and in those igneous rocks which subsequently penetrated it from the interior. It may thus be said that the source of all ore deposits may ultimately be traced to rocks with igneous characteristics. The igneous rocks which carry, or are answerable for, the richest metalliferous masses are mainly those of the larger intrusions. These are deep-seated or plutonic in Character, by which is meant that they never reached the earth's surface in a fluid state, but were covered to a considerable depth at the time of their consolidation. Generally speaking, the older igneous intrusions - that is to say, those which belong to the pre-cambrian and Palaeozoic periods - are richer in ore deposits than those which have been intruded at a later date. Book Synopsis Geological Sketches of the Precious Metal Deposits of the Western United States (Classic Reprint) by : Samuel Franklin Emmons

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological Sketches of the Precious Metal Deposits of the Western United States Cinnabar does not occur in well-marked veins, but generally in irregular bodies distributed through the rock. In the New Almaden mine, which has been much more extensively worked than any other in the state, these bodies appear, from a model constructed by the owners, to lie on a curved surface, indicating a geometrical relation between the positions of the several ore-bodies, though an obscure one. At this mine the masses of ore are usually connected by tiny seams of the same material. There is a strong similarity between this mode of occurrence and that of many lead-ore deposits in limestone, and it may be that the problem of their true character is the same. The quicksilver country north of San Francisco is a volcanic region, while to the south volcanic rocks are subordinate in some localities and wanting in, others. To the south, too, there is no indication of any recent deposition of the ore, while to the north deposition is still actually in progress. No general inference as to the genesis or the age of the deposits can therefore be drawn without further investigation, while the great similarity in the association of minerals suggests a similar origin for most of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Ore Deposits of the Republic Mining DistrictOu the east side of the Cascade mountains three sites were selected as follows: At Selah Gap, two miles north of North Yakima, in Yakima county; at Marshall, a few miles southwest of Spokane, in Spokane county; and at Dixie, 11 miles north east of Walla Walla, in Walla Walla county. At all of these places basalt of good quality occurs in sufficient quantities to supply large crushing plants for a great many years. In each instance a railway line passes directly by the quarry, thus making the shipping problem an easy one.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Ore Deposits of the Bonanza District: Saguache County Colorado The mining town of Bonanza furnishes an admirable example of that astonishing mushroom growth that has characterized the founding of so many mining camps in the Cordilleran west. Not only in its sudden growth from nothing to a populous mining community, but in its almost equally rapid decline after its failure to live up to the early expectations of limitless wealth has Bonanza many parallels in the Rocky Mountain mining districts. That, however, the town as a mining camp has persisted and today is able to show no little interest in the development of its mining resources, may be attributed to the fact that such resources do exist, and that those interested in their development have not lost faith in their ultimate success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Ore Deposits My former pupil, Mr. Frederick Prime Jr., a very enthusiastic student in this branch of geology, has received my full approval and permission to translate my book on Ore Deposits. I have suggested many alterations, and additions, which he will set forth in this translation; so that, as a whole, it may be considered as a new edition (the third one) of my work. From the attention I have given to it, as the translation progressed, I feel justified in approving it as a whole.
